TRHS WIN COWS CREATE CAREERS COMPETITION!Over the course of Term 2, students at Tweed River High School completed the Cows Create Careers program that is a nation-wide competition aimed to educate students about the importance of the Dairy Industry in Australia. In this program, each school is provided with a curriculum educating students about how dairy farms operate across Australia and are required to raise two dairy calves that were provided to the school by a local farmer. Students then enter a body of work consisting of a model, PowerPoint Presentation and a literacy task. Turn to page 6 for further details and photos.

SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORTAll the best to Year 12With Term 3 drawing to a close the school is transitioning towards 2020 and school life is quickly coming to an end for our HSC cohort. As the dust settles on a frenetic few weeks finalising school assessments and meeting deadlines for the first oral, performance, PIP and the major project components of HSC examinations; we wish Year 12 all the best for the remaining couple of weeks of their school life. I would encourage them to continue consolidating their learning in order to glean another mark or two in the final course examinations.
Year 11Year 11 are currently undertaking their first taste of the HSC exam environment. With the modern HSC providing less opportunity for exam practice it is important that students take as much learning as they can from these experiences in order to hone this necessary skill.
A number of Year 11 students have offered themselves for the leadership role of School Captain for 2020. Each of these young people is to be congratulated for the way they have carried themselves throughout the short campaign. Regardless of who may win the final vote our school can look forward to working with a strong student leadership team in the coming year.
Developing Quality Young PeopleA number of our Year 10 students were recently trained as facilitators for wellbeing programs delivered to Stage 4 students. The Family Centre training facilitators were very open in expressing their praise for the qualities these young people demonstrated and how they worked with younger students. More evidence that our school is developing quality young people who will, AND are already contributing positively to our community.
Student WellbeingRecently Year 8 and 11 participated in workshops highlighting important wellbeing issues such as developing positive relationships and anxiety, its impact on the individual and the strategies students can employ to control it and support each other. Year 10 will participate in a similar workshop in the coming week. Student wellbeing provides the platform for student achievement. When the physiological and emotional needs of the student are being met the student is better able to reflect on their goals and focus on the learning and making a positive contribution. The school continues to support an environment where students are able to learn.
Year 7 2020Enrolment processes are well underway for our 2020 intake of Year 7 students. Staff are liaising with schools on individual students who may require additional support in the transition to high school. School processes are being evaluated and preparations are being made to improve systems and structures for the next cohort of students so their transition is as smooth as it can be while they take up the new challenges of a high school environment.
TRHS UpgradeSome very preliminary investigations are occurring in relation to our facility upgrade program and we are told to expect more information in the coming month. The school may not be looking forward to the disruption these works will inevitably bring, but our staff are looking forward to the benefits this upgrade will bring for educational delivery. We hope to be able to share more in coming newsletters.
Mr Breen Mackney, Deputy Principal

CONGRATULATIONS TRHS!Tweed River High School is proud to announce they WON the entire Cows Create Careers Competition across the North Coast region with schools spanning from further south than Evans Heads to schools located on the Gold Coast. This is an excellent achievement for our students who deserve acknowledgement for their many hours spent caring for our two dairy calves and the quality of their academic work that was considered to be of an exceptional quality.
Particular mention should be made to Jayda Kucan, Alyssa Holyoake and Bella Sprenkeler from Year 8 who won 1st place and $500 for the school for their model of a working dairy farm. Additionally, Keeli Keys, Lalya Hadlow and Phoebe Williamson won 3rd prize for their PowerPoint on the importance of dairy products in our diet.
Tweed River High School would like to thank Corey Crosswaithe for donating the dairy calves to Tweed River High School, Doctor John Hampson from Terranora Veterinary Clinic for providing outstanding ongoing veterinary care for our school's animals and Roly Van Mossveld, the school's farm hand, for his dedication in supporting the learning of all students studying Agriculture. The 2019 Premier's Reading Challenge has now ended and I wanted to thank all the students who participated this year. It is wonderful to see students reading with such enthusiasm. Stories make us grow, transport us to different places and allow us to experience the world as well as prepare us for difficult situations and people we may encounter.
I look forward to giving great prizes to our best readers early next term. A very big thank you to our generous sponsors again this year. We couldn't do it without you.

Compulsory School Attendance
Information for parents
Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.
What are my legal responsibilities?
Education in New South Wales is compulsory for all children between the ages of six years and below the minimum school leaving age. The Education Act 1990 requires that parents ensure their children of compulsory school age are enrolled at, and regularly attend school, or, are registered with the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards for homeschooling.
Once enrolled, children are required to attend school each day it is open for students.
The importance of arriving on time
Arriving at school and class on time:
• Ensures that students do not miss
out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day
• Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine
• Give students time to greet their friends before class
• Reduces classroom disruption
Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents.
What if my child has to be away from school?
On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:
• being sick, or having an
infectious disease • having an unavoidable medical
appointment • being required to attend a
recognised religious holiday • exceptional or urgent family
circumstance (e.g. attending a funeral)
Following an absence from school you must ensure that within 7 days you provide your child’s school with a verbal or written explanation for the absence. However, if the school has not received an explanation from you within 2 days, the school may contact you to discuss the absence.
Principals may decline to accept an explanation that you have provided if they do not believe the absence is in the best interest of your child. In these circumstances your child’s absence would be recorded as unjustified. When this happens the principal will discuss their decision with you and the reasons why.
Principals may request medical certificates or other documentation when frequent or long term absences are explained as being due to illness. Principals may also seek parental permission to speak with medical specialists to obtain information to collaboratively develop a health care plan to support your child. If the request is denied, the principal can record the absences as unjustified.
Travel
Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays. If travel during school term is necessary, discuss this with your child’s school principal. An Application for Extended Leave may need to be completed. Absences relating to travel will be marked as leave on the roll and therefore contribute to your child’s total absences for the year.
In some circumstances students may be eligible to enrol in distance education for travel periods over 50 school days. This should be discussed with your child’s school principal.
