Last Tuesday and Wednesday, students from Tweed Heads South Public school learnt about the ways to be safe at the beach, where to go to if they are in trouble at the beach and also what the lifesavers and life guards do at the beach to keep us safe. Scott from Queensland Surf Life Saving Association talked students through different signs used at the beach and their meanings, demonstrated a safe rescue and talked about the importance of swimming between the flags and not swimming at night. To fit with the theme of the day, the canteen had some awesome healthy red and yellow food and the students raised money to help support the surf life savers, as their job (as volunteers) is such an important role in the community. Some valuable lessons learnt!

Ask your child if they are happy about the negative consequence that followed. If they agree that they want to avoid the negative consequence, discuss different ways they can think about what happened. Different thoughts that may help control being very anger:• “I need to take some deep breaths and think

about what happened.” • “What will happen if I act in this way?”• “Stop, count to ten, think”• “I need to talk to someone about this, so I can

figure out what to do.”• “I can control what I do and say.”• “I can follow the rules. The rules are there to

help me.”• “While this is bad. It’s not that bad. It could be

a lot worse.” Knowing you have an alternative to unhelpful ways of thinking enables people to re-structure their negative, unhelpful ways of thinking to more positive, rational and optimistic thoughts. “Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.” Mark Twain, 1835-1910

Musical InstrumentsStudents at Tweed Heads South Public School from kindergarten to Year six have been learning how to play the guitar, recorder and drums with Mr Nicholls and Mr Russo. Some students are able to play their own musical instruments already and are beginning to teach their friends. All of our future musicians are turning up to practice and they are showing a great commitment to learning how to play their chosen musical instrument. All music lessons are followed in sequence through recognising and playing notes and chords. It is expected that there will be a performance by these students towards the end of the year where they get to showcase what they have learned.

You Can Do It!This term we have looked at what helps people to be happy and successful. We have discussed persistence, resilience, organisation, confidence and getting along. We are now looking at habits of the mind that stop students being successful and happy at school. This week we focus on anger.Negative habits of the mind that lead to feeling very angry include:• Being intolerant of others- thinking that people

should always treat me fairly and considerately and in the way I treat them, and when they do not, I can’t stand it and they are totally bad.

• Acting without thinking- this is the absence of reflection about different ways to handle a situation.

• Being intolerant of limits- thinking that I should be able to do what I want, that nobody should be able to tell me what to do and that I cannot stand having to follow rules.

• Social irresponsibility-thinking that I only have to be concerned about me and it is not important to be sensitive to the feelings of others, act honestly and to treat others with respect.

Things you can do to help your child include:Set up rules that have logical consequences and let your child be accountable for their actions. Logical consequences can be taught using an “if-then” rationale e.g.; if you are careless with your work then you have to repeat it on your own time. Logical consequences teach responsibility for one’s actions. We want students to have self-discipline and self -control. Therefore, it is essential that students be encouraged to see that their behaviour is a choice and how they choose to behave results in negative or positive consequences. After aggressive behaviour that resulted in a negative consequence discuss: a. what happenedb. the thoughts the child hadc. feelings they feltd. behaviour that occurred and e. the consequence that followed.

Aboriginal Music & DanceThere are over thirty students from Kindergarten to Year six participating in the Aboriginal Music and Dance classes that are held in the school hall. Aunty Charrie and Aunty Lesley have volunteered to give up their free time to teach the students several Aboriginal dances. Tweed Heads South Public School is very proud of its parents for their involvement in the school and would like to thank Aunty Charrie and Aunty Lesley for contributing to the teaching and learning programs at the school. The students have een perfectly behaved and engaged during each session since the program began three weeks ago.

Reading Eggs

Class 3-4N have been totally engaged and commitment to participating in the Reading Eggs program this year and have achieved great milestones by reaching higher levels with their reading and being certificated for their hard work. The class has been utilising the Math’s online program this term and the students have taken advantage of the program to develop their mathematical concepts in all strands of Stage 2 mathematics. They have gained a deeper understanding in these strands using problem solving strategies, working with fractions, tallying and graphing data and adding four and five digit numbers.

Sapphire AwardCongratulations to Elliot on achieving a Sapphire Award. Elliot is the fourth student to achieve a Sapphire Award this year. The merit system is to encourage and reward postive behaviour and learning. Topaz and Sapphire Awards also earn students a place at the Principal’s morning tea which is held once a Term.

NEWSLETTER Safety First!During Term 3 in PDHPE, all students have been learning about road safety. This includes how to be safe as a pedestrian, car safety, bike safety and how to be safe on public transport. The students described why we need to follow certain safety rules e.g. wearing a seatbelt, and discussed the implications and consequences if we did not follow these rules. Years K-2 have written and drawn rules they know about road safety and how to act in the car, on the bike and as a pedestrian. Years 3-4 are creating road safety posters that reflect responsible behaviours and Years 5-6 have drawn on their musical talents and created a “road safety RAP” to relay messages about the consequences of not following road safety rules.

My PlaceThis term, 5-6H has been reading and researching the book My Place by Nadia Wheatly and Donna Rawlins. The book was engaging and the show complimented the text by providing additional information. 5-6H researched each decade from 1788-1988. We researched and wrote letters including what people did in everyday life, describing all the people and convicts that were in the book.We got so interested in this topic, we decided to do an artwork describing what is was like for the Indigenous people when the English men and women invaded their country.

Letters and paintings have been extremely descriptive and engaging. Here is a letter which Jorja wrote.

11 April, 1808Dear Sam,I’ve been thinking what it’s like to have a ticket of leave and how free you would be. But as you know, I don’t have one yet. I’m not even sure I will get one.It is going well at the farm, I mean it’s not going bad at all. The others and I do the regular stuff like milk the goat and get the hen’s eggs. I even have a new friend that I called Pokey. She is a wombat. Just recently soldiers came to see Mr Owen. They all drank and ate like it was a party. Alice and I didn’t like it there so we had our own party in the fig tree.I really miss you Sam. It’s not the same without you. Please respond to this letter.Sarah
