Welcome back to Term 4

Holidays seemed to whizz by and we are back ready for an

action packed Term 4. Year 6 prepare to orientate themselves

with high school and have a number of memorable experiences

coming up as they finish primary school. Panto is well

underway and the excitement is building for all the budding stars

as they prepare to take to the stage. I am very eagerly looking

forward to seeing our students perform.

Welcome to our new families who have joined us this term. We

hope you settle in quickly and are receiving a warm welcome

from our school community.

Scheduled Maintenance Works

The holidays were a busy time for the painters at school. The

majority of painting and maintenance work is now completed

with only just a few areas being finalised.

Our school certainly looks new and shiny, with our exteriors

being freshly painted.

The grass playground area was also treated with top-dressing

during the holidays and is currently not being used to allow the

grass the chance to regenerate. A huge thank you to Chris

Bennett for the supply and levelling of the topdressing. It’s a

large area to work with and your support for our school is greatly

appreciated.

Newly Appointed Assistant Principal

Mrs Anna O’Brien has been successful in the merit selection

process and has been appointed as the new Assistant Principal

to commence at SPS in 2019. We would like to congratulate

and welcome Mrs O’Brien to SPS.

2019 Kindergarten

This term we will be welcoming our 2019 Kinder students. Our

second parent information session will be held on Monday, 22

October at 6.30 pm. ‘Transition to School’ begins this term.

2019 Kindergarten students are strongly encouraged to attend

these sessions, as this is a great time to get to know the school,

teachers and the other children they will begin Kindergarten with

A big thank you to the Upper Hunter Mining Dialogue and Liddell and Bulga Coal for providing the Year 5 students with this wonderful opportunity to tour the local mine sites last term. The students thoroughly enjoyed the tours.

PSSA Girls Cricket

Singleton Public School vs Mullumbimby Public School.

The girls played in round 4 of the knockout tournament against Mullumbimby Public School at Port Macquarie on Thursday, 20 September. Our girls won the toss and elected to bowl first, bowling Mullumbimby out for only 67 runs! The SPS bowling attack was lethal with some outstanding wickets being taken by all bowlers. SPS were unlucky in the second innings being bowled out just short of the total. The sportsmanship on the day was outstanding as always! Thank you to all the parents for their support throughout the tournament, it is greatly appreciated. To the superstar cricketers, you played so well through the tournament and achieved an amazing result. The team should be very proud of their efforts!

K-2 Sports Carnival

The K-2 sports carnival was held on Wednesday, 19 September. All student participated well and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Kindergarten goes to the Singleton Show

On Friday, 21 September, Kindergarten set off to the Singleton showgrounds to see the wonderful exhibits at the much anticipated annual show. There was ample excitement as we headed to the ring events, where the horses were competing. Who should we see there but our very own Mia Badior in KL competing on her pony!

We then headed up to the most mouth-watering pavilion – filled with delicious cakes, biscuits, jams, relishes, slices, sponges and honey. How marvellous! If only we could have tasted all of them! We saw photography, paintings and drawings, craft, knitting and crocheting. There was even a Singleton Public School audio picture presentation. Well done Mr Johnson!

Next there was a slithering, slippery friend at the reptile park, who we could pat. Guess who?! There were many more soft and cuddly farm animals at the petting zoo, including Shetland ponies, bunnies, ducklings, kids and lambs. What a treat.

But the fun wasn’t over yet. We headed into one of the sheds and cast our eyes over giant pumpkins, zucchini and carrots. There was a multitude of fruit and vegetables on display, some arranged into fruit and veggie faces and people! The sweet perfume of the roses was fragrant in the air as we perused the woodwork exhibit, and patted a Fantastic Mr. Stuffed Fox. How soft he was!

With one more last glance over at the arena at the horses, we headed off to school, our appetite whetted for a visit on Saturday….perhaps…. Meg Drinan Organising Teacher

Year 3 Outdoor Experience Excursion

AAAHHHHHHHHHHH! HEEELLLP, I’M FAALLLIINGG! How would you like to be swinging backwards from 12 metres, then have your guts go flip-flopiddy as you swing high to a halt, then turn around for another drop??

Last term, 67 Year 3 students embarked on an excursion to the Morisset Outdoor Active Education Camp. They were accompanied by Ms Zeidler, Mrs Alaban and myself.

We arrived at morning tea time, unpacked and were fed to the brim (for the entire time), before beginning the first of the organised events. Over the following day-and-a-bit we participated in a number of activities: the giant swing (adjusting our stomach), flying fox (fast enough to put a part in my hair), high ropes (tested out stability on a wire with wobbly legs), archery, and finally the multi-climb (pushing comfort zones). Students also joined in the evening fair followed by a story around the camp fire, “I’m gonna get ya, I’m gonna eat ya”.

All these activities encouraged the students to step outside their comfort zone; some more so than others. I would like to personally congratulate everyone for ‘having a go’, particularly those who had a legitimate fear of heights. Even so, these people still harnessed up and began a particular activity, until they just could not go any further. The point is, is that they tried. They gave it a go. Some harnessed up and began an activity and thought they could go no further, however, found that with the aid of a camp instructor could make it all the way to the end! Big congrats to you guys!

On reflection of some of these encounters following our return, students recognised that these are the experiences which allow you to build character and learn new things about yourself.

The staff at Morisset Camp were very helpful and professional in their provision of instruction to the students. They were friendly, informative, always available to assist whenever needed, and took great care of the students.

I would also like to thank Mrs Alaban and Ms Zeidler for their assistance on the camp.

Sporting Schools

Unfortunately Sporting Schools will not be running in Term 4 as the school was not successful in gaining funding.

2019 Kinder Enrolments

Is it coming time for your child to commence their school education? The school is able to register names for children starting Kindergarten 2019 in our school zone. If you would like to start your child at school next year and haven't yet advised the school, please do not hesitate to contact the school office to organise enrolment as soon as possible.

School Planning - relocation

To assist the school in planning for classes and enrolments in 2019, we ask that families who intend on relocating at the end of 2018 contact the school office.

Intensive Swimming

All children in Year 2 and selected Year 3 and 4 students will be attending an Intensive Learn-to-Swim campaign in Weeks 3 and 4 of Term 4 (Monday 29 October until 9 November 2018). This will occur every school day during these two weeks. Children will need to bring: swimmers, towel and goggles (clearly labelled).

This intensive program is a NSW Department of Education initiative; therefore, it is a recommended program for all Year 2 children.

The cost will be $80.00 for the two weeks (includes lessons and bus). Please forward permission notes back to school as soon as possible. The whole amount needs to be paid by Monday 22 October - before the commencement of the program so that the Gym and Swim can be advised of numbers. You may prefer to start paying $5.00 or $10.00 per week so it is all paid beforehand. Refunds will not be possible as the Centre has organised the professional swimming teachers and they have a no refund policy. However, if you advise the school the week before that your child will not be attending, numbers can be changed with the pool and a refund should be able to be forwarded to you. Unfortunately, memberships/season tickets at the Gym & Swim Centre are not valid for learn to swim programs.

Children will be tested and put into groups according to their ability. The better swimmers will receive squad coaching while others may receive coaching on breathing and stroke technique, as well as activities to develop strength and stamina in the water. Therefore it is expected that ALL students participate in the program. Please note: Day 9 will be the assessing day and Day 10 will be Safety Day - please ensure children bring long pants and long sleeve top to swim in (no goggles) on this day with all clothing, towels and swimwear clearly labelled.

We welcome any parents/carers who can assist with the program. Please indicate the session and days you are available on the permission note. You do not have to instruct but assist the professional instructors.

The session times for the two weeks are as follows:

Monday to Friday Group 1 (2L, 2PD) 12.30 – 1.15 pm

Group 2 (2J, 3/4) 1.15 – 2.00 pm

The Gym and Swim requires any volunteers to have a current Working with Children Check while the school requires a completed Appendix 5 form. If you do not have a check, you are able to apply for one online and then have it completed at Service NSW. Simply go to http://www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/Working-with-children/working-with-children-check, complete the online application form, selecting the category Volunteer Worker. You will then be issued with an application number. Take this number and paperwork to the Service NSW with your 100 point check documents eg Birth Certificate (70 points) and Driver’s Licence (40 points). Once a Working with Children Check number is issued (it may take a few days) please bring a copy into the school. If you have any queries about this see the office staff.

If you need assistance financing this program please contact Mrs Kerrie Burns in the school office. All requests are strictly confidential and must be made at least two weeks prior to the commencement of the program. Strictly no late payments can be accepted. Payments can be made to the school by Parent Online Payment, cash, cheque, EFTPOS or credit card.

Tell Them from Me Survey

Singleton Public School is taking part in the Tell Them From Me Survey and students, parents and teaching staff are invited to give their feedback.

The survey is anonymous, voluntary and easy-to-use. It is based on a comprehensive questionnaire covering parents' perceptions of their child's experiences at home and at school.

Insights into parent and staff communication, activities and practices at home, and parent voice on the school's support of learning and behaviour all build an accurate and timely picture that schools can use for practical improvements.

Classes 2019

In the coming weeks, the school will begin planning for classes in 2019. In this process, teachers, school executive and the Learning Support Team, use professional judgement to very carefully ensure the correct placement of students in classes for next year.

Occasionally, parents or carers have a specific concern for the wellbeing of their child for consideration in this process. If you have a specific concern, it is important to, firstly, share your concern with the child’s class teacher – as they may have a different perspective to add. Having done that, concerns can be put in writing to the attention of the school principal and submitted to the office.

Concerns or requests pertaining to the child’s social, academic or emotional wellbeing will be carefully considered within the process. Under the principle of equity, requests for specific classroom teachers for 2019 will not be considered. Submissions might include a comment on a child’s capacity to relate to other children, or perhaps a style of teaching that a child has responded positively to previously.

The organisation of classes is a process which is carefully planned. If you have a specific concern, submissions need to be received by the office prior to Friday,16 November, 2018.

It is usually not possible to move a child to a different class once rolls have been established.

Please also inform the office if your family is relocating in 2019.

Band News

In preparation for the annual Singleton Town Band event, ‘Bands in Concert’, the band will be rehearsing with Singleton Heights Public School band, St. Catherine’s school band and King Street Public School band on Friday, October 26 at King Street Public School. We will leave school at 9.10 am and finish rehearsal at 12.30 pm. Students will need to bring their instrument, music, a stand (if they have one), a snack and a water bottle.

We will be holding an extra rehearsal at the Town Band Hall in Bowman Street on Monday, 29 October at 5.15 pm. It is hoped that there will be an opportunity for parents to buy ‘early bird’ tickets for the concert at these rehearsals.

The combined performance is always a great way for the students to meet children from other schools and helps develop their musical skills.

More information about the concert on Saturday, November 3, will be given at a later date.

We will be walking, so it is covered by the general walking permission note.

Please let me know if your child cannot attend the November concert as they won’t need to go to the rehearsals.
