A lthough it's more like a kunsthalle than a

collecting museum, the Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana is a great place to view contemporary art that's relevant, fresh and exciting. Conceived in 1994 and opened in 1999, it serves as the heart of the Santa Ana Artists Village. Grand Central is a 45,000-square-foot complex that includes a main gallery, a project room, a sales gallery, the Gypsy Den, a theater and 27 apart-ments for Cal State Fullerton graduate fine art students, plus one artist-in-residence. The center is operated by Cal State Fullerton and owned by the city of Santa Ana. The art on view for the past few years is what makes Grand Central special. The cen-ter has specialized in "lowbrow art," or what some critics call "pop surrealism," but that's not all it's shown. Exhibitions since 2009 include "R. Crumb's Underground," "Hidden Wounds, Paper Bullets: Iranian Contemporary Art," "BC Space: Mything in Action," "Weapons of Mass Delusions," the excellent group show "Suggestivism," "The Curiosities of Janice Lowry" and "Hand Pulled: The complete SHAG Print Collec-tion."
