NEXT EVENT IS... Wednesday, November 14, 2007, 6:30 pm The Music Business / career Development Presented by Anthony Glise. This is a "short" version of the class Anthony teaches at Missouri Western State University. The class at the University runs an entire semester so this presentation will be intense. This seminar will cover such topics as copyrights, ASCAP and BMI licensing, contracts and negotiations. This seminar will last approximately 2 hours.
Meetings are held Thursdays 7:00 PM at Café Acoustic 2605 Frederick St. Joseph, MO. 816-671-1141
December 8, 2007 Ward-Stock A benefit for the family of Doug Ward 3:00 pm to 1:00 am Scheduled to play: Grass Widow, Midnight Express, MWSU Jazz Band, Anthony Glise, Standing on Nines, M82, Smilin Jack, Fistful of Silence, Lin Buck, George Hunt
Greetings
Our sympathies go out to Lisa Hancock, owner of Café Acoustic, who recently lost her mother.
Ward-Stock will be December 8, 2007 at Last Call, 2316 N. Belt, St. Joseph, MO. Music will start at 3:00pm. The benefit concert plans are moving forward. There will be eight bands and several solo artists playing throughout the day. We have the backline, lights and the PA rigs in place for both stages. The days’ complete schedule is finished and is listed in this newsletter and is also available on the website. There is still a lot of work to get done over the next few weeks.
There will be a required meeting for all benefit performers, possibly one week before the benefit. We will announce the meeting date later. Everyone that is scheduled to play will be required to be at that meeting. If your entire band cannot make it, please make sure as many of your band mates as possible are there. With the number of musicians playing, the tight schedule and two stages, things HAVE to go smoothly. A single problem has the potential to ruin the day.
Posters and quarter sheet flyers are out and being distributed by local businesses such as The Graphic Stop, Record Wearhouse, Sonic North Belt Drive-In, Lanham Music, Café Acoustic, Foster’s Martini Bar and Bass and Treble Music.
We are receiving donations from several companies and many individuals. As you know, these donations will be auctioned off to help raise money at the December benefit.
Check the “For Sale and Wanted” Section both here and on the website. There are quite a few items this month. We are looking for newsletter articles that are of interest to you. Send us your articles, ideas, suggestions, questions, etc.
The Foundation is growing!
This month, we welcome several new members including Luis in St. Joseph, Kirt from Maryville, George from Kansas City, Michael in Omaha and Victor in Portland, Oregon!
On Tuesday, Nov. 13, the Griffon News will run an article on the Foundation. Here's the link http://www.thegriffonnews.com/ or you can find it through the SJMF website on the “Resources, Useful Websites, Media Websites” link.
The St. Joseph Music Foundation has begun a program of collecting and distributing instruments for children. In addition to the instruments, we also plan to supply lessons for those children. We are accepting any musical instrument. Please contact us if you have an instrument you wish to donate or if you would like to help with monetary donations.
Be sure to make plans to attend the seminar entitled "The Music Business / Career Development". It will be held on Wednesday, Nov 14 at 6:30pm at Cafe Acoustic, 2605 Frederick, St. Joseph, MO, 816-671-1141
Lastly, don’t forget the interviews and articles at EQ Magazine and Mel Bay. The August issue of EQ Magazine contains an article written by Jeff Anderson. Jeff owned and operated Sound Logic Studios here in town until he moved away. The article features interviews with several engineers and musicians including our friends Anthony Glise and Tom Ransom. The web address is http://www.eqmag.com/article/gear-me-up/aug-07/30622 The Mel Bay City Scene article is from April 2007 and is about St. Joseph and the music scene here. The link is http://www.guitarsessions.com/apr07/cityscene.asp
Be Prepared for Problems
For most musicians, a tool kit is nothing more than an extra set of strings or extra drum sticks or a spare reed.
Usually the “tool kit” will include only what will fit in the storage box of the instrument case or in their back pocket. While this may be adequate in most cases, it is not very realistic or, at the very least, not very ‘self-supporting’. And definitely not very professional. How many times have you been asked (or maybe you are the one asking) if someone has a pick or a spare high E string? Or a cord they could borrow? Or a mic stand? Or a mic? A battery? A fuse? A screwdriver? Pliers? Extension cord? While this may be acceptable when you are playing in a band with your friends, it is totally unacceptable in live or studio work. Obviously, the well equipped tool kit would include a replacement for every piece of gear you have, including a spare instrument, amp, etc. While this is not financial possible for most of us, it is the fastest, easiest “repair”. Because things only go bad when you use them, replacement is your only option in many cases. It would be almost impossible, or at least very rude, to stop a show while you solder an end to your cable. In the studio, it would mean a time and money disaster. Not to mention the lost income from calls you no longer receive. Replacement cables are absolutely required if you are doing any kind of live or studio work. Have at least one extra of each type of cable you use i.e. extra instrument cable, extra mic cable, extra power cable, etc. With the exception of possibly the mic cable (since it will be running to the snake or board and have a longer distance to run) the spare cables do not have to be the same length as your original. By carrying shorter spare cables you can travel lighter and smaller.
Personally, I prefer the bulk and weight of having spare cables of the proper length. Having a cable go bad is worry enough but being reminded of it all night long by having to play within a short (and uncomfortable) distance from your amp is frustrating and may causes problems in your performance. You know yourself best… The tools you decide to carry with you will depend on your method of transporting them. If all you carry is a case filled with extra strings and picks or extra sticks or reeds, you would not have room to carry a full size solder station. However, if your tool kit consists of a full-size Anvil case, complete with casters then, a solder station will have little effect on the space or weight. Tools you will need to maintain your own electronics and cables include: Soldering iron or a variable-heat solder station. Wire cutters / Wire strippers Replacement ends that match your configuration i.e. XLR, ¼ inch mono and ¼ inch stereo, both male and female Screwdrivers of various sizes, Phillips and slot Some length of cable, instrument cable and balanced cable. A complete tool list might look something like this: Batteries (9 volt, AA, D) Polish rags Cable Power strip Crescent wrench Power supply cube (for effects) Contact cleaner Scissors Drum sticks Screwdrivers Duct tape Socket set Electrical extension cord Solder Electrical tape Soldering iron Flashlight & bulb Staples Fuses (1, 2, 3 amp, quick and slo) Staple gun Gloves Strings Instrument cables Super glue Midi cables Tubes for amp / preamp Nail clippers and nail files Tuner Needle nose pliers Wire cutters Picks Wire strippers Pliers Wire ties Polish Whenever you play, be it at home, in a paid performance, or anything in between, have your spares close by. Believe me, it is frustrating when you are practicing at home at 1:00 a.m. and you realize after breaking a string that all your spares are packed neatly away in the band truck. You must be prepared for any problem.
