Dear Parents,
I thank you for your continued support throughout 2017. Simonds Catholic College continues to be a vibrant community that is full of great energy where an enormous number of events and activities continue to take place alongside the academic studies of our students throughout the year. This week, it was a delight to welcome next year’s group of 88 Year 7 boys, as they participated in their Orientation Day and began forming friendships that may well last a lifetime.
On a sadder note, we farewelled several staff members this week. Peter Dingli and Maryanne Krall are retiring, while John Howes, Shaun James, Joanne Massey, Desi Sinis, and Jenny Watson have all obtained positions at other schools for 2018. Students and staff alike will miss their presence in our staffrooms, classrooms and school yards, but wish them the best for a successful transition into their new roles.
Within the Church’s liturgical year, we are currently in the middle of Advent. In Advent, we remember Jesus Christ, who has been born into human life, and look to the future when God’s Kingdom will come. We look forward to celebrating the coming of Christ at Christmas, knowing all the while that Christ has already been born.
May I take this opportunity to wish all families an enjoyable holiday period. May you all have a safe, happy and Holy Christmas.

Prayer for relaxation at a busy time
Lord Jesus, Please forgive me for being so grumpy as I trudge through the never-ending tasks set before me this
holiday season… My to-do list seems to keep growing with shopping,
church services, and family gatherings and I’m running short of time!
Restore the joy of Christmas to my heart . . . and help me to relax each day and make time for
YOU my one true Source of Joy.

5 Year Reunion for Class of 2012
On a very rainy Friday December 1, members of the graduating class of 2012 returned to the College to renew acquaintances and chat about “old times”. 45 of the group were present with some past and current staff. The event was organised by members of the Alumni Wellbeing Team from that graduating year: Gianni Cozzi, Tim Ryan and James Launer.
It was a delight to see the young men interact and to really enjoy each other’s company – and it was heartening for staff to see how well these young men have grown. We are proud of them!
Endings and beginnings.
Soon we reach the end of the year and look back on all sorts of experiences … and give thanks for some … and wonder about others … and wish perhaps, that some were other than they were.
In any case, the year is almost done. Exam results will be received and time away from school will be welcomed. School ends and holidays begin.
In terms of wellbeing, holiday time is best used and enjoyed when BALANCED. The many components which make up a school boy’s life include family, friends, for some – relationships, sport, gaming, part-time employment, time alone. Holidays afford people the time to pay attention to ALL of what is regarded as important in life. During the busy-ness of the school year, sometimes some aspects suffer from unintentional neglect … and so holidays offer the chance to re-balance life.
Those who are tempted to fill up holidays with “all of one thing” (like huge numbers of shifts at work … or endless hours of gaming … or never being home) run the risk of living unbalanced. And it is imbalance which is the enemy of wellbeing.
May all in our community be well in the time they spend away from school and work … and enjoy connecting with the many people and aspects that make up their lives.
All the best – Mr P Rohan | Coordinator of Student Wellbeing | Counsellor

On Monday November 12 2017, the Junior Debating Team made up of: Leo Gemmell, Jett Ryder, Jet Cawte, Thomas Assenza, and Patrick McCartin and Junior Public Speaking Team consisting of: Thomas Matijevic, Luke Nguyen, Aaron Magri and Krish Vij, set off to participate in the ACC Debating an Public Speaking Competition that was held St Bernard’s College. These young men spent hours researching and preparing their speeches. The Debating Team tackled topics ranging from banning violent video games through to discussing a reduction in Australia’s population growth. The Public Speaking Team shared their beliefs about the dangers associated with using the internet and why the people of Australia should elect them to parliament. Though our teams did not bring the trophy back to Simonds, what they did bring back was far more important than any trophy. These young men gained experience and confidence. I know as a school we are very proud of their efforts.
The 49 students who met the Premiers’ Reading Challenge has been presented with their certificates.
Congratulations to them and to all the students who participated this year. It is a very popular Literary event in our
College and successful challengers also receive House Points.
