WHAT’S NEW PRES?

While August is over, September promises to keep our members and community thoroughly engaged with a

host of events; religious, educational and pure entertainment! Just what we need to ease our kids back-to-

school.

We are thankful for another smooth Shahenshahi Muktad observance conducted at the Darbe Mehr, beginning

with the clean-up by our ever-dedicated volunteers followed by the five Gatha day prayers and all the offerings

donated by the community. A huge Thanks to our Mobeds, the Muktad Committee and its volunteers. We are in

an era where no individual is above the organization they serve, and the Zoroastrian Society of Ontario is no

exception. While we continue to encourage Zoroastrians, their spouses and children to become members of

ZSO, everyone is welcome at the Darbe Mehr on any day of the year.

With the Gatha days concluded, the Shahenshahi Nowruz and Khordad Saal were celebrated with enthusiasm

and great food – thanks to our dynamic Entertainment Committee! The ZSO recognized over a decade of

volunteer services by member Mandana Bastani and her family, including husband, Cyrus Zandian and

daughters Meher and Maya.

September begins with the Shahenshahi Farvardegan on Wednesday the 4th, followed by the first meeting of

the Scouting year by our ever-active 100th Toronto First Zoroastrian Scouts Group on Sunday the 8th, an

informative social and networking event by Kanoun and Iranian Professional Bankers on Tuesday the 10th and

the wildly popular Music & Entertainment night on Saturday the 14th!

The Fasli Paitishahem Gahambar and Kanoun AGM are on Sunday, September 15, while the Children’s

Religion Classes kick off for the year on Sunday, Sep. 22nd. We round off the month with the WZCC meeting

and first Shahenshahi Gahambar on the 28th & 29th respectively.

I must recognize the preceding Board for upgrading the ZSO’s IT infrastructure including website by

subscribing to the services offered by Wild Apricot, a company specializing in online membership management

used by several SMBs and non-profits.

Managing your ZSO Membership, event registrations and more is now even easier and more secure. Download

the Wild Apricot Members app from the App Store or Google Play and sign-in using your ZSO username and

password. Everything you need is just a click away at www.zso.org or through the APP.

Our goal is to connect the community and empower the next generation! Onward and upward…

Seniors Food Fair

The Seniors Food Fair is on Saturday, October 12th at the Darbe Mehr, from 1:00pm to 3:00 pm. If anyone

would like to participate as a vendor, please check out the flyer attached to the Newsletter. If we can know the

names of the vendors and what they are planning to prepare, we can send out the list to the community, so if

anyone wants to preorder the food, it will make it easier for the vendors to prepare the quantities. That way no

one is disappointed when they come there. Please contact Freny Gandevia at 416-888-8851,

Yasmin Khory at 416-733-0699, or Roshan Rabadi at 647-341-6731.

Seniors Corner

On July 26th, 62 Seniors were treated to an afternoon of music.

Jennifer accompanied by her husband, Ritchie entertained the

Seniors to toe tapping music that a lot of the Seniors were familiar

with. The music was so good that several people started dancing

to the familiar tunes. A little later Jennifer was joined by none

other than our very own, Freddy Mirza, who played the harmonica

to some of the tunes. Cheers and claps went up in appreciation of

the performances.

Then while everyone waited for lunch to be served, some ladies sang a few hindi and english songs,

accompanied by Freddy on the harmonica. Roshan Rabadi had prepared Dhan daar patia and fish, for lunch

which was enjoyed by all. On the whole a fun afternoon was had by all!

**********************************

August 9th was celebrated as Grandparents Day by the Seniors and their respective grandchildren. There was a

huge turnout of 57 Adults and 12 children ranging from 2 years to 13 years.

The children in attendance were:

Dylan Belliappa, grandchild of Yazdi and Guloo Bharucha

Eric and Natasha, grandchildren of Dinshaw and Aban

Dastoor

Noah, Nina and Shiraz, grandchildren of Phiroze and

Dinaz Dotiwalla

Kamran and Kian JIvraj, grandchildren of Farouk and

Yasmin Khory

Zoe Irani, grandchild of Fredoon and Pervin Khory

Shahnaz and Shirin, grandchildren of Rohinton and Kate

Kiash

Layla Commissariat, grandchild of Dara and Katy

Panthakee

The children played a game of passing the pillow. Whoever got the pillow had to state their name, how old they

were, and what they would like to do. Some sang, danced, jumped, and Eric decided to walk around the room,

thinking of parathas!!!!! Eric even impressed everyone with his skills of organizing the Rubik’s cube.

The kids also played a game of musical chairs. All the children were given loot bags to take home.

Thanks to Percy Daruwalla for arranging for Chinese food, to Phiroze Dotiwalla who arranged to pick up the

food for us and to Percy Surti for bringing the ice cream bars for dessert. Children and Seniors all had a great

time, with some children saying they had so much fun they would to come again the next day!!! Looks like we

will have to make this an annual event.

To join the Seniors group, please contact Freny Gandevia at 416-888-8851, Yasmin Khory at 416-733-0699, or

Roshan Rabadi at 647-341-6731 and your name will be on the phone list to be advised of the upcoming

meetings. We meet every alternate Friday, so at least twice a month. We encourage all seniors to attend.

100th Toronto Scouts Group - August 2019 Report

Although there was no scouting activity by our scouts, Scouter Kersi

Khambatta assisted in arranging and serving meals to scouts and

scouters from UK and Germany, at the Scouts Canada Woodland

Trails Campsite in Aurora, ON from August 5th to August 11th. The

activity was organized by Scouts Canada and nearly 4000 scouts

from UK and 400 from Germany were hosted by various scout

groups across Canada on their way home from the 2019 World

Jamboree in Virginia USA.

Kersi had initially

volunteered to assist in

the kitchen along with

others, to prepare the meals for nearly 300 UK scouts from August

5th to the 8th, but, due to a last-minute shortage of volunteers, he

was requested by the organizers to extend his stay from August 8 to

11th to take care of nearly 200 scouts from Germany, which he

graciously agreed. As it turned out, instead of “assisting”, he ended

up being in charge of the entire kitchen in organizing and serving

meals throughout the week. He was responsible for keeping track of

the inventory and also ended up giving First Aid to some scouters

and scouts with cuts and bruises!!! He had to organize the clean-up

of dishes and the dining area. On an average, he had only 3 hours of rest (2 am to 5 am) daily. However, as he

remarked, he had a “totally amazing camping experience”. Scouters Maneck Appoo and Freddy Mirza assisted

with the outdoor games and activities on August 7th. Maneckji did shopping of lumber and made “3-person

“skiis” to give the UK scouts “a taste of winter” skiing, which was thoroughly enjoyed. Although Freddy left

early, Maneckji stayed behind and helped with the campfire. Scouts Canada Organizing Scouter Chris Case

commented that “Woodland Trail had never before had such a camp fire”.

Scouter Kersi was congratulated for his efforts and was given scarves from the German unit as well as Scouts

Canada as a token of appreciation for all his hard work. Thanks to Kersi and Maneckji, our scout group fulfilled

its commitment to Scouts Canada for the Hosted Hospitality (“Ho-Ho”) event.

Invitation to Iranian Zoroastrian Cultural Kanoun Election

We need new and fresh ideas to operate and manage the Kanoun and to work for the betterment of our community. As the General Meeting of the Iranian Zoroastrian Cultural Kanoun approaches, we hereby invite you, particularly the younger generation, to step in and share your thoughts and aspirations and help the Kanoun’s Council further its objectives and promote a healthy and harmonious society for ourselves, our children, and our peers. Remember that we are Zoroastrian, the inheritors of Zarathustra’s message, and our ancestors have struggled hard to pass on this religion to us. By joining the Council you can work together, bring new management, knowledge and ideas to create a community that aims to fulfill the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s generations.

Appreciate your understanding and your participation
