JRGehri Art Show at NBGCC Friday September 23rd at 5 pm !

JRGehri is a self-taught artist, with no formal training other than a correspondence course to refine some basic drawing techniques. Most of his training came from trial and error and art books. As a young man he was always able to draw and excelled in art. He attended Florida State University and Rollins College, where he obtained a Bachelors and Masters in Criminal Justice. He did not start to paint seriously until his late 20s. He started in oil, progressed to acrylics and then to watercolor. He finally settled into mixed media, heavy into watercolor pencil and pen/ink. Painting allowed him to relax as a result of a very stressful occupation. He was a career NCIS Special Agent serving in locations around the world. Over the years he developed his techniques in mixed media (watercolor pencil, pen and ink and soft pastels), specializing in wildlife. His works have been sold throughout the United States to private collectors. He often donates to charitable events such as the March of Dimes, Breast Cancer Research and Wounded Warriors. He has done commission work in Texas and Colorado. Now that he is retired, he devotes more time to his artistic endeavors. He enjoys experimenting with various techniques combining medium for surprise results. He is a member of the St. Augustine Art Association and Art Studio.

Well, another Summer is coming to an end and the pool will be closing soon. The kids are heading back to school and swimming gives way to the Fall sports and tailgating. Thanks to all of the members and guests that helped make this season another safe and successful one. Everyone loves the extended hours on Wednesday through Friday nights and we will continue to do special events like the “The Float-In Movie Nights” next year for the kids. Our swim lessons were also well received. We have had a record number of kids shed those “floaties” and have graduated to the deep end of the pool.

Once again thanks for another successful and fun season by the pool. Good luck heading back to school. Most of the Guards have said their goodbyes and we look forward to next season.

TENNIS REPORT, BILL JONES

It is hard to believe the official month of fall is here. Fall to me is when football starts and the temps start thinking about coming down a bit. Schools are all now in and kids are into their routines. The fall season at the tennis center has begun. We have the Men’s and Ladies USTA leagues playing, as well as, the Twilight Tennis playing on select nights.  Cardio tennis is back and the after school kids program begins Sept 13th…….Wow what a busy month!

Tennis News

!Tennis Member of the Month!!!She is one of the nicest members at NBGCC.  She is a stalwart here at the tennis center, never missing a chance to play with a social group of friends.  She is always kind and polite. She has a nice word for anyone and everyone she meets. She likes to ride her bike to the Club and has a smile every time we see her.  Do you know who this is??? This is, of course, Mrs. Patty Willis. Thank you Patty for brightening our day and making NBGCC a great place to be.!

Kids Program !Kids program sign ups have begun. The program runs for 4 weeks starting Tuesday, September 13th.The classes run on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the grouping and times are as follows:  5-7 yr. olds from 4-5pm, the 7-10 yr. olds from 5-6pm and the 10-up from 6-7pm. You can do both days or just one or the other based on your child’s availability.  The cost is $15 per child per class. We are excited to have everyone back after a long and enjoyable summer.  Please let us know if there are any questions.

This class runs every Tuesday night at 7pm, just in time for the holiday season. This class is designed to keep your heart rate in the perfect calorie burning zone. We keep the pace up, with music added, to keep you moving. If you need to take a break, we love to have cheerleaders on the side until you are ready to go again. This is a modified exercise class with tennis to keep you in shape for the

winter. We would love to have you out and we always like to remind everyone this is a limited space class. Please sign up in advance, the class size is limited to the first 6 who sign up and the cost is $12 per person per class. We hope to see you soon so we can help keep your fitness goals headed in the right direction.

LTA free clinic and play day is coming up…….We here in the tennis department want to remind all the ladies who are in the LTA that your play day is Friday Sept 16th at 9am.  We will be giving a free clinic from 9-10am and then encourage you to stay and play with all your practiced skills.  There is a signup sheet in the shop and all we ask is that you call, email or come by so we can get you signed up.  We want to make sure you are getting the very best teaching here in Eastern North Carolina so you can go out and win another gold ball for your club!  We are looking forward to the clinic and another successful season.

New Wilson shoes are coming this fall and winter. We will update you as they become available. Please remember anything you can find online we will beat that price if it is available.

Tennis Camp Success! The summer camps at NBGCC have ended. For the first time in NBGCC

history, almost 100 years, we had tennis involved in nine camps. We had some of the busiest and best camps ever.  Thank you to all the kids, their families and the counselors who helped.  Without you we would not be able to have so many opportunities for all these great memories and fun.  I can’t wait to see everyone next summer. Take care and have a great school year!

!• Congratulations to Caroline Bryant and Randal Hudson for capturing top honors in their respective age

divisions in the Eastern North Carolina Junior Golf League finals held at Wilson CC on Monday, August 8th. Both Caroline and Randal had to win sudden death playoffs to get the win. So proud of both of you!!

• Congratulations to EB Austin for crushing his age by 6 shots on July 24th when he shot a smooth even par 70 at the age of 76! EB made four birdies on that day and I’m sure grabbed a couple of skins! !

• Ryan Holland shot his career low round of even par 70 on July 30th! Ryan is living proof that even with a pair of newborns you can still play some great golf! !
