Pastor’s pen

Last year an article in The Washington

Post asserted, “Broadly speaking, American churches are in-

credibly generous to the needs of a hurting world.” Here are

some stats:

In 2009, overseas relief and development supported by all

American churches exceeded $13 billion.

Foundations and non-church charities spent $11 billion.

In addition, groups such as Samaritan's Purse, Food for the

Hungry, World Relief, and many others provide hundreds of

millions of dollars in anti-poverty programs at home and

abroad.

Those numbers don’t include all the work which churches pro-

vide locally for those in needs: clothing closets, food pantries, home-

less shelters, and hot meals.

One way our local Huron churches serve the needy is through

the Huron Ministerial Association’s Transient Help Fund. This fund –

supported by over a dozen area churches – helps people passing

through Huron get where they need to go. Transient persons can get a

safe place to spend the night and some help in the next leg of their jour-

ney.

The Ministerial Association is sponsoring a Community Soup

Supper at Riverview Methodist, Sunday, January 31st, 5-7pm. Freewill

offerings given at the meal will go to support the Ministerial Help

Fund. Come enjoy a great meal

and support a good cause.

Ministry Minute

I know that education is one of the most important things that

we can do. We know how important it is for our children and young

adults. We send our children to school during the week and to Sun-

day School on Sunday mornings. We expect our children to go to

college or tech school to learn and prepare themselves for their ca-

reers. How much time do we, as adults, spend in a group setting

learning about faith and studying scripture? We cannot learn and

grow alone, we need to learn from one another. We need to learn and

prepare ourselves, not only for our careers but for our lives. We need

to learn and grow so that we can better face the challenges that life

and the world puts before us.

As the new year begins I would like you to invite you to re-

start your Christian education. There are several different opportuni-

ties for learning and growth here at First Presbyterian. Andrew and I

are both teaching classes on Sunday mornings. In January I am

teaching a class for the deacons of our church and helping them to

continue doing the great work that they do. Andrew is teaching a

class centering around Christ in the Gospels.

I am starting a new book for the Thursday noon book study

on January 7th. We will be studying the book Altar Ego by Craig

Groeschel. This book explores who God has created us to be, not

who society tells us we should be.

Thank you so much for the care package. It was a great morale booster, not just for me either. I shared the contents with some of the people I work with. They enjoyed it as well. It is great knowing that there are people that still think about us Service Members even when we are state side. Just because we aren’t deployed does not mean we do not work long hours and are away from our loved ones. Thank you again for the package. It is very much appreciated. Yours in Christ, Pace Clayton. What a wonderful surprise to get a care package from home. The treats, baked goods, and personal items are all great-ly appreciated, as well as the sporting magazines. Most of all it was nice to know people from home were thinking of me. I will be deploying again within the next few months. Hopefully I will get time to come home first and attend church while I am home and see some of you. I have shared the treats with my bunkmates, and they think I am pretty fortunate. Thanks Again! Sincerely, Robert Pietz Staff Sgt. U.S. A. F. Travis Airforce Base, CA

Thank you for thinking of us at this time of the year. The party and Calendars are fun. Residents of VTMH
