That is what my cousin sister did. Her parents were recovering alcoholics with no education past high school. That did not stop her though. She got straight A’s all throughout her years before college, and was able to land a huge scholarship to help her get through the forthcoming years. To support herself through college, she was a barista at a local coffee shop. While juggling her academics and working at the café, she was able to pick up a lot of internships that helped lead to her job at Rocketown. Professional Preparation… Kat has wanted to obtain a job in journalism ever since she was a little girl. She always wrote poems and participated in extra curricular activities that helped her nurture and develop her writing abilities. While in college, she obtained a job for the college newsletter where she was able to write about current events and opportunities that students could take advantage of. “I’d say that was my best writing development opportunity,” she said. It also helped her to network and attain contacts for future reference. She was able to carry her abilities to her current job. Currently, she writes newsletters about local artists playing in the venue. She also gets to talk with the artists and takes professional photos for the newsletters. Her favorite pastime is listening to music and singing. Her job has allowed her to connect music and writing. She said, “I’m in love with my job. It allows me to incorporate the two things I love: writing and music.” Advice to Others…

Advice to Others…Kat has endured many struggles along the road to her success, so she has a few tips for those wishing to follow a similar path:

1. Prioritize your schoolwork!2. Do not lose focus.3. Networking is key!4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.5. Make friends the first day of class!6. Communicate with your professors.7. Join a club that enhances your skills.
