Term 3 Week 2

Friday, 3rd August, 2018 Newsletter From the Principal

Welcome to Term 3. I trust everyone had a safe, relaxing and enjoyable break. We have

some fantastic events planned for this term, including our Education Week Open Day next

Thursday, the Book Week Parade, Public Speaking and the Combined Schools Music Festival

which our choir and dance groups are involved in.

iPAD LEARNING EXPERIENCE

We have been very fortunate to secure an iPad Learning Experience through Apple at our

school this term. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to trial a 1:1 iPad experience with a

whole class for a fortnight with Apple’s on-site support. Mrs Floratos and Mrs Aekins will be

working closely with Apple education staff to plan and implement lessons involving iPads,

exploring how technology can enhance our current learning and teaching programs. The iPad

Learning Experience will begin in 6F on Monday, 13 August and a full evaluation will be

completed at the conclusion of the program. Following this experience, the school will make

a decision as to whether we embark on a 1:1 iPad program, also known as ‘Bring Your Own

Device’ (BYOD) for Stage 3, 2019.

WELCOME MRS MEOLI & MISS HANNAH

We welcome two new staff members this term. We are very excited to have a new

permanent librarian! Mrs Meoli has been getting to know our staff, students and school

routines and has made some small but impactful transformations in the library.

Miss Hannah Smith is our new Student Wellbeing Support Officer. Earlier this year, we were

successful in obtaining a grant from the

Department of Education whereby funding is

provided to schools to engage a Student

Wellbeing Support Officer 2018-2020. Miss

Hannah’s role is to support the social and

emotional wellbeing needs of students and she

is at our school on Wednesday and Friday

every week. See Miss Hannah’s welcome in

this newsletter for more information on her

role.

KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS

If you know of any families who have school

ready children, please let them know that they

should be starting to enrol after the holidays.

We have a school tour for prospective parents

and student on Tuesday, 14th August and we

would love to show them around our beautiful

school.

SKOOLBAG CALENDAR

We have updated the key dates for excursions and events for the remainder of 2018 in our Skoolbag app, so please

refer to these until the years end. Please keep in mind that dates and times can change at short notice and while

we do endeavour to stick to current plans, unexpected changes can occur for a range of reasons.

POP UP SCHOOL UPDATE

Plans are progressing for the pop-up school to be up and running at Peakhurst West for Term 1 2019, with

construction set to begin in August. Before they start any work, the builders will be installing fencing to ensure that

Peakhurst West Public School students cannot access the site.

Over Term 3, School Infrastructure NSW will continue to provide us with regular updates on the pop-up school,

including more detail on how the Peakhurst West and Penshurst public schools will operate together. They will also

keep us up to date on the various improvements planned for Peakhurst West Public School such as the new

playground equipment, painting of classrooms, new carpets and the toilet block refresh.

POOL UPDATE

Earlier this year, in accordance with the Department’s procurement procedures, the school underwent a tender

process for the future development, use and management of the School’s swimming pool. After an extensive

tender evaluation, Bluefit were offered and have accepted the

opportunity to operate our swimming pool facility. More information

regarding the transition to Bluefit’s services will be distributed as the

term progresses.

Thank you for your ongoing support and patience while these changes take place.

We hope to see you all at our Open Day on Thursday as we celebrate the strong Public Education system we are so

very grateful to have in Australia.

From Our Student Wellbeing Support Officer

My name is Hannah Smith and I'd like to introduce myself as the Student Wellbeing Support Officer (SWSO) under the new NSW DoE program rolled out across the state this year. As part of the school's wellbeing team, my role will consist of providing emotional and social support to students in either a one on one, or a group setting as referred by classroom teachers as well as executive staff. I will be working on Wednesdays and Fridays, so if you want to contact me, either call the school office or see me in the playground before and after school. I am excited to be a part of the Peakhurst West Primary community, working with the wonderful staff and students. Hannah Smith

Our annual Spelling Bee for Yr3-6 was held in the

school hall on Monday 30th July. Each class

nominated two students for the school finals. Stage

Two competed first and the students took turns until

there were just two winners. This process was

repeated for Stage Three. The final winners were:

Stage Two—Eric Wang & Nathan Lu

Stage Three—Kevin Tu & Eric Broekhuis

The winners will now compete in the Regional

Spelling Bee Finals on September 3rd. This event will

be hosted by our school in our Assembly Hall—good

luck boys!

Congratulations to our winners, Mrs Aekins who

organised the event, Mr Brown and Mrs Stubis and

Vienne Macmillan.

2/3P

In the Stage 2 school magazine was a poem about Pets and this

inspired 2/3P to write some of their own poems.

The Perfect Pet

Maybe we should try

another pet-how about

this kitten?

It’s furry and soft we

named it Mitten.

It’s medium speed,

It’s always in the lead,

It’s the size of a giant’s

bead,

Everyone is smitten! Kayla Nguyen

The Perfect Pet

I would love to get a frog,

He would really like to be friends with my dog.

He’s small and bouncy, the size of a small book I

read,

He’s soft and slimy and very easy to feed.

He jumps around at a very fast speed,

What about exercise? Well there’s no need!

I’d keep him under a log.

Matthew Yuan

The Perfect Pet

I want to get a very new pet today-perhaps a

rattlesnake.

I’ll feed him a lot of chocolate cake,

I’ll let him live in a crate,

But oh dearie me! Now he’s shaking me awake!

Perhaps next time I’ll get a different snake!

Maybe I’ll get a black widow spider.

I’ll let it drink delicious apple cider,

I’ll let it read the book Cinderella,

But now, what a surprise! Now he’s training to

be a horse rider!

Maybe I’ll get a new pet spider!

Maybe I’ll get six pet mice?

I’ll feed them cheese everyday—twice,

I’ll let them drink water everyday—thrice,

But it turns out that these mice aren’t very

nice!

Perhaps, next time I’ll get two different types

of mice!

A “Peri” Big Problem

“It’s a periscope,” I say, as my little sister stares, gapes and

marvels at my friend’s periscope, as if it were solid gold.

“Can I pway wiff it?” she asks.

“Sorry, you can’t,” I reply. “It’s very fragile and you might

break it.”

Uh on… I should not have said that. She’s about to cry...

“Here,” I quickly say, “take it.”

My sister immediately snatches the periscope and dashes to her bedroom, like a

miner who’s struck it rich and wants to tell his friends about it.

“But be careful!” but she can’t hear me as she disappears into her bedroom.

“Well, can’t stop her now,” I mutter.

***

A few minutes later I decide it’s time to reclaim the periscope. As I walk to my sister’s

bedroom the hallways are echoing and my ears are ringing.

I open the door, and face the worst.

The worst has come, for in her room there is a broken periscope, my dad’s hammer

and a bawling sister, shouting her head off.

Oh no, I think. What will I say to my friend? He’ll

probably kill me for breaking his periscope. His only

periscope!

Unless…

I go to the study and grab some tape, glue and safety

goggles, (you never know what may happen), and

stare at the damaged periscope that resembles a

jigsaw puzzle, ready to try and fix it. Harrison Wang
