Welcome to the Scottish Pathology Network summer newsletter. This edition will summarise the work that SPAN has undertaken or been involved in during early-mid 2018. July 2018 Newsletter Scottish Pathology Network Issue 6 The first BMS Dissection Training School took place during 14 th -18 th May 2018 at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow. The School presents the ideal opportunity to enable new dissectors to obtain initial training in the practicalities of dissection, and also become familiar with the principles and clinical governance in laboratories. An excellent Training School programme was developed to provide theoretical training and a basic practical overview of all of the main tissue specialities in Histopathology, and was intended to equip attendees with a strong basis from which to continue their dissection training. We are delighted at the interest that has been generated in expanding BMS Dissection across the country. BMS Dissection already takes place in most Pathology departments across Scotland, at variable levels. A data collection exercise undertaken in 2016/17 determined that, of the dissection time commitment in Scot- land, 21% is delivered by BMS staff. SPAN’s long term goal is to increase BMS Dissection to enable medical time to be released from dissection to diagnostic reporting or other clinical work. This is a key deliverable in the Scottish Government’s National Delivery Plan for Healthcare Science to develop sustainable services through workforce modernisation. Attendance at the Training School is the first step in achieving our long term goal, and will be followed by a training programme undertaken at local department level, which is intended to result in new dissectors obtaining competence in dissection of category B&C specimens. Successful completion of local practical training programmes will ultimately improve patient care by reducing medical time in dissection which can be reinvested in diagnostics reporting and improved patient turnaround times. The business case was approved by NHS Board Chief Executives and funding has been agreed. Plans are underway to plan the next Training School next year! The mortuary group met on 20 June to review the outcome of the survey. This will provide baseline data for the current mortuary provision and issues facing services in Scotland. Recommendations will be made and presented to the next Steering Group on 11 September.

The SPAN Data Group met on 4 June to decide on the “top 20” data fields for inclusion in the new laboratories data mart. The SPAN Data collection closed on 1st June. The Information Management Service will present the data in Individual Health Board Reports to the SPAN steering group on 11 September.

The Diagnostic Steering Group met on 6 June, commending the work of SPAN. The annual report and workplan were also endorsed. See the latest bulletin here:

The next Steering Group will take place on 11 September.

The next Andrology Group will take place on 28 September in Dundee.

Our next SPAN event will take place on 2nd

November, at the Hilton Grosvenor Hotel, Edinburgh. This is during the same month as National Pathology Week. The programme will explore “Embracing the Future” and we hope to encourage the audience to look to the future, reflect on the positive aspects of change which they have encountered in histopathology and to be part of future changes. Please cascade this to any colleagues who may be interested. If you or any other colleagues in your Pathology department have developed a poster, feel free to take it along to be part of our Pathology poster exhibition! Please save the date in your diaries and register here!
