President's Message9-25-16

My congratulations to all the winners at the Northwest CT show. Weather was beautiful and a great time was had by all. I was sorry to hear that Jan Stephenson was in the hospital. All the trophies will be mailed to the winners. Thank you for your patience and do hope that Jan is on the way to a quick recovery.

Thank you to Liz Faber for coordinating the picnic. The venue was nicely decorated and there was food galore thanks to our members. We do like to eat and socialize! We had the meeting before the luncheon. I want to thank Linda, Deb and Carlie for their input of possible venues for holding a National Specialty in 2020. The decision was put on hold until we have a specialty chair and treasurer. Expect an email asking for volunteers. Once those positions are filled, we will move on with the plans.

Also expect an email explaining the Lifetime membership proposal. Please read it and respond with your thoughts. Complete information on the meeting will be in the minutes.

I do not want to forget to thank Jean Clark for putting together the Border Times. It's an important means of communication for the club and she does a wonderful job!See you at the shows!

Ann

Attention Agility, Obedience & Rally folks

As I started preparing this issue of the Border Times and was looking at the coming events I see that BTCA is supporting the entry of Border Terriers in agility, obedience & rally at the November cluster at The Big E. This has been done for several years now as has support of the shows in Syracuse in late March.

I would very much appreciate it if someone attending the events in November would supply a report of entry numbers in the events for this newsletter. It would be great if some numbers could be supplied for the Syracuse events, too. Of course photos would be most welcome and if you'd like to write up a story or article about your experience instead of just supplying numbers that would be much more interesting.

Thanks for your help. I'm sure many members would like to hear more about these events!

Information, photos, etc. should be sent to the Editor at [email protected]

The Border Times September 2016

After a very successful run in the show ring with Amelia, Grace (GCH CH Starkweather How Sweet the Sound) was bred to Liz Faber’s dog, Sully (GCH CH Starkweather Sky Rider). The result–a lovely and healthy litter of four puppies born on June 23. To our delight, she had three blue and tan dogs and one grizzle bitch, very much like herself.

It was Grace’s and my first litter so I imagined every worst case scenario as the whelping day approached. Liz, as well as Tim Acker and our vets, patiently guided me through the dos and don’ts as the weeks progressed. Grace and Mother Nature took care of the rest. I was very grateful for a 10am delivery after a good night’s rest, breakfast and shower.Amelia made it home from her trip to Tibet within 24 hours of whelping. She took the lead in the delivery as I drove home from the post office. By lunchtime we were lining the whelping box with clean towels and taking a deep breath.

Throughout the summer, I must admit that my happiest moments were sitting on the floor and simply watching Grace and her puppies interact and grow as their personalities emerge. It was all quite magical and entertaining. Grace was a terrific mom and took as much delight in the puppies as I did. It was hard to tell which one of us was busiest as they became mobile and full of themselves. By the end of the summer when they left to join their families, we were both ready to catch up with our sleep.

The pups all went to great homes in the Northeast (VT, CT, NY, and MA) and I am eager to see one of the boys out in the show ring in the months ahead with Liz Faber.

Grace has resumed her daily activities of chasing all things with wings, feathers and big ears (airplanes, crows, and donkeys). With no pups to order around, she keeps our three dogs in line at all times. They cower at her bossiness and miss the days when she was preoccupied with her litter and not them.”

BTCA 2020 Specialty, will it happen here????

Hello Everyone,

If you have been coming to meetings or following the minutes, you know we have been investigating hosting the BTCA Specialty in 2020. A number of members have already put in a lot of time and effort towards that end, thank you Ann, Barb, Deb, Linda and Theo. We are currently at a stand still for lack of volunteers to be Chairman and Treasurer. We are looking at early August 2020 in MA, PA or RI with most events being held indoors. It’s a lot of work but also extremely rewarding and an excellent opportunity to bond with fellow Border folk. So, if you think you might be interested please contact any club officer. You will have lots of help and support from experienced NBTC members and the newly revamped BTCA Specialty Liaison Committee.

I’m including a link to the BTCA page with job expectations. http://www.btcoa.org/policy/8-02.pdf

Let’s make this happen! Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Holly Woodward

From the Editor

This newsletter is the primary point of contact between NBTC members so I'll try to include any/all photos, stories, news items that are sent to me. Since few members (out of the total membership) are able to attend the various events NBTC supports, this newsletter is a way of letting others know what members are doing, what happened at the shows (without turning it into a show report) and other events. Photos and stories from members help us to learn about each other and from others' experiences.

Please send in photos, stories, etc. Years ago I ran a column in the newsletter called "Ups 'n Downs" and it was a place where highlights or lowlights could be shared. I'd like to get that going again. This would be where brief mention of a win, new litter or other happy event could be shared, or maybe brief mention of something that blew a qualification in an event, or even a sad goodbye. Thanks, Jean Clark, [email protected] or [email protected]
