EDITORIAL

Chers collègues et amis, En septembre 2015 nous avons pu participer lors de notre assemblée générale au colloque sur la mise en scène de la ville par elle-même que Martina Stercken avait organisé avec beaucoup de succès à Zurich. Qu’elle en soit encore une fois vivement remerciée. Le 14 février 2016 le comité de notre Commission s’est réuni à Bologna chez Francesca Boc-chi pour préparer l’avenir de la Commission. Certaines propositions et décisions sont d’un tel intérêt que j’aimerais les communiquer immédiatement à tous les membres: La prochaine assemblée générale aura lieu, à l’invitation de Gerhard Fouquet, à Kiel, dans le nord de l’Allemagne, les 15 et 16 septembre 2016, accompagnée d’un colloque sur les es-paces urbains à fonctionnalité sociale, deuxième volet de notre thématique pluriannuelle préparée par Ferdinand Opll et Martin Scheutz. Le programme détaillé, élaboré en collabora-tion avec les responsables du projet „Villes de résidence dans l’Empire (1300-1800)“ de l’Académie des sciences de Göttingen, se trouve ci-dessous aux pages 44. En 2017 nous nous réunirons du 14 au 16 septembre à Cracovie en Pologne, à l’invitation de Zdzisław Noga; le colloque portera sur les fonctions politiques des espaces urbains et toute une journée sera consacrée aux atlas historiques. En outre, les membres de la Commission pourront présenter, lors de l’assemblée générale, de courtes communications sur l’état des recherches en histoire urbaine dans leur pays, ou sur des points de méthodologie, ou sur tout autre sujet en relation avec nos objectifs qui leur tient à cœur. Cette nouveauté décidée à Zurich doit donner l’occasion au plus grand nombre de justifier leur déplacement auprès de leur institution d’attache afin d’obtenir ainsi le financement de leur participation à un colloque scientifique. En 2018, nous nous retrouverons du 20 au 22 septembre à Salzbourg (et non à Milan comme initialement prévu) pour discuter des espaces à fonction culturelle dans les villes. Par ailleurs le comité s’est rendu compte que nos statuts qui datent de 1993 ne correspon-dent plus à la pratique actuelle et il a ébauché un projet de modification. Le comité peaufi-nera ce projet et le présentera à Kiel pour qu’il puisse être discuté et voté l’an prochain à Cracovie. Finalement trois membres du comité actuel ont déclaré leur intention de plus faire renouve-ler leur mandat, à savoir Francesca Bocchi, Marjatta Hietala et Darja Mihelic, et après dix ans le soussigné va renoncer à la présidence de la Commission. Roman Czaja se portera à Kiel candidat à la présidence en présentant une équipe rajeunie. Mais il va sans dire que selon nos statuts tout autre membre est en droit de présenter sa candidature et de former ensuite une équipe à élire pour diriger la Commission. En espérant donc que la participation à notre assemblée de Kiel sera nombreuse et que les élections verront surgir un comité dynamique, je remercie d’ores et déjà tous les membres de la Commission pour la confiance qu’ils m’ont témoignée au cours de deux mandats de présidence et je souhaite à la Commission entière une dernière fois sous cette forme une bonne continuation de ses travaux.

Dear Colleagues and friends, The General Assembly and the fruitful Conference on „Urban Staging“ in September 2015 is still in our memory. Martina Stercken as organizer gave us a warm welcome in Zurich and we would like to thank her in the name of the Commission. Invited by Francesca Bocchi the board members discussed at the board meeting on 14 Feb-ruar 2016 in Bologna the near future of the Commission. Some of our decisions and pro-posals are of greater importance to the Commission therefore I would like to announce it hereafter: As you all know the next General Assembly will take place in Kiel/Germany on 15/16 Sep-tember 2016 at the invitation of Gerhard Fouquet. Our general assembly is embedded in a conference on “Changing Social Functions of Urban Spaces”, the second part of our long-running program organized by Ferdinand Opll and Martin Scheutz. Please find the detailed program of this Conference organized in cooperation with the project “Royal Residence Cit-ies in Holy Roman Empire (1300–1800)” in this newsletter on page 44. 2017 we will meet (September 14/16) at the invitation of Zdzisław Noga in Krakow (Poland); our topic will be the political functions of urban spaces. One day of this conference will be dedicated to all matters concerning town atlases. During the general assembly all members will have the opportunity to present national research projects to the audience but also new methods on urban history and all other matters concerning urban history and questions con-cerning our Commission. Following a discussion of Zurich all members who need to give a paper to get their travel expenses back should have the opportunity to give a paper. 2018 our conference will be held in Salzburg (September 20–22) where cultural functions – a kind of genius loci of Salzburg – will be our topic. Originally we considered to have this meet-ing in Milano but unfortunately this plan will not come true. In the wake of the discussions in Bologna we found that our statutes dating back to 1993 do not meet the current practice of our Commission. In the month ahead we will try to modify the statutes and we will present a new version in Kiel. We should discuss and approve the new statutes in Krakow 2017. At the end of our meeting in Bologna three board members declared their will not to contin-ue their work in the board for one reason or another: Francesca Bocchi, Marjatta Hietala and Darja Mihelic will retire – thank you for your support! I, the undersignd, will give up after ten years of work the presidency of the Commission. Roman Czaja will stand in Kiel for presiden-cy and will present a rejuvenated crew. But to put it clear according to the statutes any member of the Commission can stand as a candidate for presidency and can nominate his own team to be elected in Kiel. Hoping to see many of you soon in Kiel and hoping to find a dynamic board I would like to thank all members for the confidence you have shown in me during two terms of office. For the last time at this point I would like to wish you a lot of success on your way.

Liebe Freunde und Kollegen, Im September 2015 durften wir bei unserer Jahresversammlung in Zürich an der schönen Tagung über „Kommunale Selbstinszenierung“ teilnehmen, die Martina Stercken mit viel Erfolg organisiert hatte. Ihr gebührt nochmals unser Dank. Am 14. Februar 2016 traf sich der Vorstand in Bologna bei Francesca Bocchi, um über die Zukunft der Kommission zu beraten. Etliche Vorschläge und Entscheidungen sind von einem derartigen Interesse, dass ich sie allen Mitgliedern sofort mitteilen möchte: Die nächste Generalversammlung findet bekanntlich am 15.-16. September 2016 auf Einla-dung von Gerhard Fouquet in Kiel statt. Sie ist begleitet von einer Tagung über „Soziale Funktionalitäten städtischer Räume im Wandel“, zweiter Teil unserer mehrjährigen Thema-tik, die von Ferdinand Opll und Martin Scheutz vorbereitet wird. Das genaue Programm, das in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Projekt „Residenzstädte im Alten Reich (1300–1800)“ der Aka-demie der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen ausgearbeitet wurde, findet sich weiter unten auf Seite 44. 2017 werden wir uns vom 14. bis 16. September auf Einladung von Zdzisław Noga in Krakau (Polen) treffen; die Tagung behandelt dann die politischen Funktionen von Stadträumen und ein ganzer Tag wird den historischen Stadtatlanten gewidmet sein. Zudem werden während der Generalversammlung alle Mitglieder die Möglichkeit haben, kurz über nationale For-schungsprojekte, neue Methoden in der stadthistorischen Forschung oder was ihnen auch immer in Bezug zur Kommissionsarbeit auf dem Herzen liegt, zu berichten. Mit dieser in Zü-rich beschlossenen Neuerung soll vor allem jenen Mitgliedern, die einen Vortrag halten müs-sen, um von ihrer Heimatinstitution Reisegelder zu bekommen, die entsprechende Gelegen-heit geboten werden. Vom 20. bis 22. September 2018 wird die Generalversammlung zum Thema kulturelle Funk-tionen von Stadträumen in Salzburg (und nicht wie ursprünglich geplant in Mailand) stattfin-den. Dann hat der Vorstand festgestellt, dass die Vereinsstatuten von 1993 nicht mehr der aktuel-len Praxis entsprechen, und er hat Änderungsvorschläge ausgearbeitet. Der Text wird in den nächsten Monaten verfeinert und in Kiel der Gesamtkommission vorgestellt, damit in Krakau darüber diskutiert und abgestimmt werden kann. Schließlich haben drei Vorstandmitglieder ihre Absicht angekündigt, ihr Mandat nicht mehr erneuern zu lassen, nämlich Francesca Bocchi, Marjatta Hietala et Darja Mihelic, und der Unterzeichnete wird nach zehn Jahren auf die Präsidentschaft verzichten. Roman Czaja kan-didiert in Kiel für den Präsidentenposten und wird eine verjüngte Mannschaft vorstellen. Doch es ist klar, dass nach unsern Statuten jedes Mitglied seine Kandidatur für die Präsident-schaft stellen und eine eigene Mannschaft für den Kommissionsvorstand zur Wahl vorschla-gen darf. In der Hoffnung, dass zahlreiche Mitglieder nach Kiel kommen werden und aus den Wahlen ein dynamischer Vorstand hervorgehen wird, sage ich heute schon allen Kommissionsmit-gliedern Dank für das Vertrauen, das sie mir in zwei Mandatsperioden entgegengebracht haben, und wünsche der Kommission ein letztes Mal an dieser Stelle viel Erfolg auf ihrem weiteren Weg. michel pauly, Präsident

The results of the Conference in Zurich will be printed in one of the series of the university of Zurich. The results of the Luxembourg Conference of 2009 are now printed. Pour faciliter la participation de plus de membres qui doivent souvent soumettre un papier afin de bénéficier d’une bourse de voyage de leur université, le conseil d’administration en-courage les futurs organisateurs locaux à inclure une table-ronde afin de tirer des conclu-sions plus générales de la conférence reliée au thème général «La cité et ses espaces» et/ou avec des rapports de recherche nationaux sur l’histoire urbaine dans le programme de l’assemblée. TOP 8: La prochaine conférence CISH aura lieu à Posnan (2020). Katalin Szende a présenté un rapport sur la conférence CISH à Jinan en août 2015 où notre commission a eu une session couronnée de succès sur les espaces urbains. Topic 1: Welcome and introduction by Ferdinand Opll who stresses the importance of the Historic Towns Atlas Project as it is the biggest project undertaken by the Commission (at present 19 participating nations). Topic 2(a): Anngret Simms gives a report on the seminar organised by the Irish Atlas team in the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin on 22 May, 2015, under the heading ‘Irish Towns with a shared European Heritage’. Following on from previous seminars, this year’s seminar was the first to compare Irish towns with continental towns. Members of the Commission who presented lectures were Roman Czaja, Marjaana Niemi and Ferdinand Opll, and Irish partici-pants were Raymond Gillespie, Mark Hennessy, Eamon O’Flaherty and Jacinta Prunty. The key note address was given by Michael Conzen (Chicago). The first volume of the Ukranian Historic Towns Atlas (Lviv), edited by Myron Kapral and the latest publication of the Irish Atlas, Youghal, by David Kelly and Tadhg O’Keeffe, were pre-sented. It is planned to publish the presentations from this seminar jointly with those of the 2016 seminar, which will focus on a comparison of Irish with English towns.

Topic 2(b): Keith Lilley, as Chairman of the British Historic Towns Atlas, reported on a work-shop which he initiated on the digital future of the Historic Towns Atlases, on 12 September, 2015, in Leicester. This is an important issue for the entire European Historic Towns Atlas project. Topic 2(c): On the invitation of Zdzislaw Noga, the Atlas Working Group will hold a one day conference in Cracow in September 2017 in cooperation with our Polish colleagues. There was a lively discussion on the content of the conference and it was decided to pursue the topic of urban comparisons on the basis of urban types: residential towns, border towns, fortified towns, foundation towns, mining towns, industrial towns, and spa towns. These topics will be discussed in the framework of a comparison between east central European towns and towns of other European areas. Details of the organisation will be in the hands of the convenors of the Atlas Working Group (Ferdinand Opll, Anngret Simms, Katalin Szende) and the Polish colleagues (Roman Czaja, Zdzisław Noga). Topic 3: Ferdinand Opll introduces the online presentation of the Austrian Historic Towns Atlas which went live in 2015. It includes the entire Austrian Historic Towns Atlas (64 towns that were published between 1982 and 2013, see http://mapire.eu/oesterreichischer-staedteatlas/), also available at http://www.historiaurbium.org/english/atlanti_en.html. A precondition for this presentation was the agreement of more than one hundred user-right holders, individuals and institutions to whom thanks are due. The online presentation offers, apart from the opportunity to search the text, the chance to search the growth-map as well as providing a zoom function for all illustrations. Daniel Stracke (Institute for Comparative Urban Studies in Münster) had at the last meeting of the Commission in Clermont, accepted the task to coordinate issues of digitalisation for the towns atlases. In Zürich he presented a new interactive map of Europe with information about European Towns Atlases; this map will soon become the centre piece of a new home page of the Münster Institute. He urged colleagues to supply him with relevant information and he is available to give information at the following email address ([email protected]). He also reported of his efforts to prepare a new application for the European COST programme before March 2016, which focuses on the digital future of the European Historic Towns Atlases. Anngret Simms presents a report written by Sarah Gearty (Irish Atlas team): The IHTA estab-lished a Digital Working Group in January 2015 with the remit to ‘co-ordinate the project’s creation, management and dissemination of digital content for both published and future atlases, with a view to increasing reach and interaction with existing and new audiences’. As part of this initiative, by the end of 2015, the IHTA will have begun the process of upload-ing published atlases in pdf format to a IHTA Digital section of the Royal Irish Academy web-site. Digital content will include the text sections and Maps 1, 2, 3, legend sheet and growth map. Facsimile maps will not be included. The IHTA are collaborating with an Irish scanning company called Eneclann who will scan all the published fascicles for (i) online upload and (ii) digital archiving purposes. – For future atlases, the IHTA are collaborating with Ordnance Survey Ireland in the creation of an online GIS for the next atlas, Galway (due for publication 2016), which we would hope would be comparable to but also a development from the Digi-tal Atlas of Derry/Londonderry.

Topic 4: Michel Pauly reports that thanks to Martin Uhrmacher (University of Luxembourg) who, since spring 2013, directed the research project ‘Histoire des villes luxembourgeoises IX’, a new application for the production for the Atlas of the town of Luxembourg has been submitted. This project is focused on the nineteenth and twentieth century and will be ex-clusively shown online. Katalin Szende reports on behalf of Marjatta Hietala that within the framework of the Scan-dinavian Atlas of Historic Towns, explorative talks have been carried out with Russian col-leagues in order to produce a towns atlas for the town of Wyborg, which was Finnish until 1939/40 and is now Russian. Topic 5: Anngret Simms reported that the book jointly published with Howard B. Clarke, Lords and Towns in Medieval Europe: the European Historic Towns Atlas Project, a presenta-tion of the papers delivered at the Royal Irish Academy in 2006, has been published by Ash-gate. This is the first time that the European Historic Towns Atlas project is presented in a major publication in English to the wider public. More information can be found at

www.ashgate.com/isbn/9780754663546 An important survey on the digital future of the European Towns Atlas project has been pub-lished by Eva Chodĕjovoská, Sarah Gearty and Daniel Stracke, entitled ‘The digital turn of the European Historic Towns Atlas: comparing solutions for digital atlas production and online presentation’ in the journal «Cittá e Storia», X, 2015/1, pp. 89-121. Topic 6: GERMANY:

1: Hesse: According to a written report sent by Ursula Braasch-Schwersmann, fifteen towns have been published in the Towns Atlas of Hesse. Since 2012 the atlases have been put online, a year after they were published (www.lagis-hessen.de). A data bank has been compiled on the basis of ‘building indices’ that allows one to undertake projects, as for example the atlas on spas in Hesse. In October 2015 the atlas for Battenberg on the Eder will be published while the towns of Friedberg, Hirschhorn and Zwingenberg are in pro-duction. Financial restrictions hinder more speedy publications. 2: Westphalia: Peter Johanek reports that within the framework of the Westphalian Atlas, produced in the Institute for Comparative Urban Studies in Münster, the town of Soest is in production.

FRANCE: Sandrine Lavaud and Ezéchiel Jean-Courret informed the Commission by letter that they are actively working on the atlas for Acquitaine («Les villes-têtes de l’Aquitaine: ap-proaches historique, cartographique et comparative»). Five towns that had already been published in the 1980s (Agen, Bayonne, Mont-de-Marsan, Pau, Périgeux) will be published again following the model of the Atlas of Bordeaux. An extra volume is planned which will be devoted to comparative studies and to spatial analysis within the regional context. Because of differences of previous research, progress may be delayed, but it is certain that the carto-graphical material will be geo-referenced and vectorised. In accordance with the publishing house Ausonius, the following publication list has been agreed: Agen (December, 2016), Mont-de Marsan (January, 2017), Pau (February, 2017), Périgeux (June, 2017) and Bayonne (September, 2017). The French Atlas team supports any efforts for a digital corpus of all Eu-ropean Towns Atlases but stresses that for the older 48 French towns atlases (published be-tween 1982 and 2003) there will only be a digitised version which will not be geo-referenced.

GREAT BRITAIN: Keith Lilley, who is now the Chairman of the British Historic Towns Atlas, has good news. The last towns atlas of that series (Volume 3: The City of London, from Pre-historic Towns to circa 1520) was published in 1989. In March 2015, Volume 4: Windsor and Eton was published. The publication of Volume 5: York is planned for 2015, Volume 6: Win-chester for 2016, and Volume 7: Oxford for 2017. The British Atlas is now published by Ox-bow, a lot of material on the British atlas is available online see: http://www.historictownsatlas.org.uk/atlases IRELAND: Anngret Simms reports the publication of a new volume in the Irish series on the town of Youghal, located on the south coast. This atlas was presented at the Atlas seminar in May 2015. The Irish team works on the imminent publication of Galway, and prepares to put all atlases that have been published so far online. POLAND: Roman Czaja and Zdzisław Noga report that the Polish series makes good progress. In 2014 the towns of Sandomierz (Volume 5: Lesser Poland) and Ziębice/Munsterberg (Vol-ume 4, Schlesien) were published. In 2013 the town of Chojnice (Volume 1: Royal Prussia and Ermland) located south-west of Gdansk was published. A few days ago Ostrόda (Volume 3: Masuria) was published. CZECH REPUBLIC: Eva Chodĕjovoská reports that the Czech team works at present on vol-ume 28 for the town of Zlín. In 2014, the town of Sušice (vol. 27) in southern Bohemia, not far from the border of Bavaria was published (see http://www.hiu.cas.cz/cs/mapova-sbirka/historicky-atlas-mest-cr/susice.ep/). HUNGARY: Katalin Szende reports the publication of volume 3 of the Hungarian Atlas of His-toric Towns, which presents the town of Szeged, located on the river Tisza in southern Hun-gary. The publication of the Atlas of Buda (until 1686) is planned before the end of 2015. The good news is that financial means have been made available for a four year period from 2016-2019. The project will now be housed in the Institute for History at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Topic 7: No other business.

Top 2(b): Keith Lilley, le directeur de l’entreprise des atlas urbains britanniques, fait rapport sur l’atelier imminent sur l’avenir digital des atlas urbains historiques (12 septembre 2015 à Leicester). Ainsi, un des thèmes centraux de l’entreprise européenne rentre de nouveau dans le focus. Top 2(c): Sur invitation de Zdzisław Noga, le groupe de travail des atlas va pouvoir organiser un atelier d’une journée avec la coopération des collègues polonais à la suite de l’assemblée générale de la commission à Cracovie en septembre 2017. Lors d’une discussion intense, il est décidé de traiter le thème de la comparaison de villes sur la base de types de villes (villes résidentielles, villes frontalières, villes fortifiées, villes de fondation, villes minières, villes industrielles, villes d’eau etc.). Ceci fait que la comparaison entre villes de l’Europe médiane et villes des autres territoires européens joue un rôle important. La prévision détaillée est entre les mains des présidents du groupe de travail des atlas (Ferdinand Opll, Anngret Simms, Katalin Szende) et des membres polonais (Roman Czaja, Zdzisław Noga). TOP 3 : Ferdinand Opll présente la visualisation en ligne de l’atlas complet des villes autri-chiennes (64 villes, qui ont été publiées entre 1982-2013) disponible sur internet depuis juil-let 2015 (voir: http://mapire.eu/oesterreichischer-staedteatlas/; peut aussi être atteint via le site internet de la CIHV, voir: http://www.historiaurbium.org/english/atlanti_en.html). La condition essentielle pour cette mise en œuvre était le consentement de tous les proprié-taires des droits d’utilisation (au total plus de 100 personnes et institutions), qui sont à re-mercier spécialement. La présentation en ligne offre, à côté de la possibilité de recherche de texte, une recherche dans le contenu des cartes de croissance ainsi qu’une fonction de zoom pour toutes les images. Daniel Stracke de l’Institut pour l’histoire comparative des villes à Münster, qui, depuis l’assemblée générale de la commission de l’année passée, assure la fonction de personne de contact pour les questions d’atlas de villes, présente une nouvelle carte interactive des atlas de villes européens. Celle-ci sera disponible sur le site internet de l’Institut de Münster dans les meilleurs délais. M. Stracke essaie de la compléter régulièrement avec des informations importantes et il est aussi disponible pour des renseignements (adresse mail: [email protected]). En plus, il fait rapport sur les efforts continus d’introduire une nouvelle de-mande d’aide financière jusqu’au mars 2016 dans le cadre du programme européen COST pour des activités de réseau afin de pouvoir continuer la transposition digitale d’atlas ur-bains européens. Anngret Simms présente un rapport de Sarah Gearty (groupe d’atlas irlandais): Le groupe irlandais (IHTA) a créé un «Digital Working Group» en janvier 2015, qui a pour but d’établir, de gérer et de répandre un contenu digital des publications déjà sorties ainsi que des futures publications d’atlas. Le but est d’élargir la portée et de rendre possible l’interaction avec d’anciens et de nouveaux intéressés. Comme partie du projet, le groupe envisage la mise à disposition dans la section digitale du site internet de la Royal Irish Academy des atlas de villes irlandais déjà publiés en format-pdf (parties du texte, cartes 1-3 des atlas de villes ir-landais, légende et carte des phases de croissance; les facsimilés contenus ne feront pas par-tie des documents-pdf) jusqu’à la fin de l’année 2015. Le groupe d’atlas irlandais est en coo-pération avec une firme de scan irlandaise du nom de «Eneclann», qui s’occupe de scanner tous les atlas de villes imprimés du groupe irlandais pour (1) les mettre en ligne et (2) créer des archives digitales. – Pour les futurs traitements d’atlas, une coopération avec le service de cadastre irlandais (Ordnance Survey) est planifiée. Cependant, le prochain atlas pour

Galway (publication 2016) sera déjà réalisé depuis GIS en ligne. Pourtant, il est désirable que la compatibilité comme le développement de l’atlas digital de Derry/Londonderry soient atteints. TOP 4: Michel Pauly rapporte qu’à cause du mérite de Martin Uhrmacher (Université du Luxembourg), qui dirige depuis le printemps 2013 le projet de recherche «Histoire des villes luxembourgeoises IX» d’une durée de trois années, une nouvelle demande pour la réalisa-tion d’un atlas historique de la ville de Luxembourg a été introduite. Ce projet va d’abord être limité à l’histoire récente de ville, essentiellement les 19ième et 20ième siècles. De plus l’atlas est d’abord exclusivement planifié comme édition en ligne. Katalin Szende rapporte au nom de Marjatta Hietala, qu’il y a eu des discussions explora-toires dans le cadre du Scandinavian Atlas of Historic Towns/Finland concernant la réalisa-tion d’un atlas de la ville de Wyborg (finnisch: Viipuri; russisch: Выборг), finlandaise jusqu’à 1939/40, et depuis soviétique, en coopération avec les collègues russes. Hesse: Selon le rapport écrit d’Ursula Braasch-Schwersmann, 15 villes ont été traitées dans le cadre de l’atlas des villes hessois De plus, depuis 2012, les atlas sont disponibles en ligne une année après la parution de l’édition imprimée (www.lagis-hessen.de). De l’autre côté une base de données a été réalisée sur base du «Gebäudeindex» qui donne la possibilité de mener des projets continus comme par exemple un projet sur des villes d’eau hessoises. L’atlas de ville pour Battenberg (Eder) va sortir en octobre 2015. Fried-berg, Hirschhorn et Zwingenberg sont en traitement. Des contraintes financières empê-chent un avancement plus rapide. Westphalie: Peter Johanek rapporte que la ville «Soest» est en train d’être traitée par l’Institut pour l’histoire comparative de villes dans le cadre de l’atlas historique des villes westphaliennes.

FRANCE: Sandrine Lavaud et Ezéchiel Jean-Courret informent à l’aide d’un rapport écrit, que les travaux sur les villes les plus importantes de l’Aquitaine («Les villes-têtes de l’Aquitaine: approches historique, cartographique et comparative ») sont en cours. Ceci dans le cadre de la réalisation d’un programme régional pour l’espace aquitain.. Cinq villes qui ont déjà été traitées dans les années 1980 (Agen, Bayonne, Mont-de-Marsan, Pau, Périgeux) seront trai-tées à nouveau d’après les critères de l’atlas de Bordeaux. L’addition d’un volume complé-mentaire, qui va être consacré aux aspects comparatifs et à une analyse d’espace au con-texte régional, est prévu. Un avancement difficile est à noter. Néanmoins il est à noter qu’un

géo-référencement du matériel cartographique et une vectorisation vont suivre. D’après l’accord avec l’éditeur Ausonius, le rythme de parution suivant est prévu: Agen (décembre 2016), Mont-de-Marsan (janvier 2017), Pau (février 2017), Périgueux (juin 2017) et Bayonne (septembre 2017). Le groupe d’atlas français est favorable à plus d’efforts en ce qui con-cerne un corpus digital de tous les atlas de villes européennes. Mais il souligne qu’il est seu-lement possible de mettre en ligne une version digitalisée et non pas une version géo-référenciée pour les 48 anciens atlas de villes (publiés entre 1982-2003). GRANDE-BRETAGNE: Keith Lilley, qui est maintenant le directeur de l’atlas des villes britan-niques, peut annoncer un progrès réjouissant: Après la publication du dernier des atlas de villes de cette série (III: The City of London from prehistoric times to c.1520) en 1989, le vol. IV a été présenté à Windsor et Eton en mars 2015. La parution du vol. V pour York est prévue pour l’année 2015, celle du vol. VI pour Winchester pour 2016 et celle du vol. VII pour Ox-ford est prévue pour l’année 2017. L’édition OXBOW se charge maintenant de la parution de l’atlas. IRLANDE: Anngret Simms rapporte la parution du nouvel atlas de la ville Youghal qui est si-tuée à la côte sud-est de l’Irlande, qui pouvait être présenté lors du séminaire de mai 2015. Pour le moment, le groupe irlandais travaille sur la ville de Galway. De plus il s’est chargé de la mise en ligne des atlas du groupe irlandais déjà parus. POLOGNE: Roman Czaja et Zdzisław Noga rapportent que l’entreprise polonaise continue à bien avancer. Les volumes des villes de Sandomierz (Petite-Pologne) et Ziębice/Münsterberg (Silésie) sont parus en 2014. L’atlas de la ville Chojnice (Prusse royale et Ermland) qui se situe au sud-ouest de Gdansk a déjà été présenté en 2013 et la remise à l’imprimerie du volume de la ville Ostróda (Mazurie), qui se situe au sud-est de Elbląg, a été effectuée il y a quelques jours. RÉPUBLIQUE TCHÈQUE: Eva Chodějovská rapporte que l’entreprise tchèque des atlas de villes est en train de travailler sur le volume 28 pour la ville de Zlín. Le tome 27 de l’entreprise tchèque est déjà paru en 2014 et traite la ville de Sušice en Bohème du sud (près de la frontière bavaroise) (voir: http://www.hiu.cas.cz/cs/mapova-sbirka/historicky-atlas-mest-cr/susice.ep/). Hongrie: Katalin Szende rapporte la parution du 3e volume du «Magyar Várostörténeti ATLASZ/Hungarian Atlas of Historic Towns», qui est dédié à la ville de Szeged, située à la Tisza dans le Sud de la Hongrie. Elle annonce que l’atlas de Buda (jusqu’à 1686) est en voie d’être publié à la fin de l’année 2015. Heureusement, le financement pour la continuation du projet a été accordé pour 4 années (2016-2019), cette fois-ci dans le cadre de l’Institut d’histoire de l’Académie hongroise des sciences. Allfälliges TOP 1: Begrüßung und Einleitung durch Ferdinand Opll, der die Bedeutung der seit 1969 er-scheinenden historischen Städteatlanten als das größte Gemeinschaftsprojekt der Kommis-sion (derzeit Teilnahme von 19 Staaten) unterstreicht. TOP 2(a): Anngret Simms berichtet über das am 22. Mai 2015 von der irischen Atlasgruppe an der Royal Irish Academy in Dublin organisierte Atlas-Seminar zum Thema „Irish Towns as Shared European Heritage“. Die Veranstaltung ist als erste in einer Reihe ähnlicher Seminare über den Vergleich irischer Städte innerhalb des europäischen Kontextes geplant. Als Vor-tragende aus den Reihen der Kommission nahmen Roman Czaja, Marjaana Niemi und Ferdi-nand Opll teil, aus den Reihen der irischen KollegInnen Raymond Gillespie, Mark Hennessy, Eamon O’Flaherty und Jacinta Prunty teil. Den Schlussvortrag hielt Michael Conzen (Chica-go). Präsentiert wurden der erste Band des ukrainischen Städteatlasses (Lemberg) und die Neuerscheinung des Irischen Städteatlasses über Youghal. Die Vorträge des Seminars sollen gemeinsam mit denen des für 2016 geplanten Seminars über „Irish Towns and English Towns“ publiziert werden. TOP 2(b): Keith Lilley berichtet über den von ihm als Leiter des britischen Städteatlasunter-nehmens initiierten, unmittelbar bevorstehenden Workshop über die digitale Zukunft histo-

rischer Städteatlanten (12. September 2015, Leicester). Damit wird erneut eines der The-men, die das europäische Gesamtunternehmen bewegen, in den Blickpunkt genommen. TOP 2(c): Auf Einladung von Zdzisław Noga wird die Atlas-Arbeitsgruppe im Anschluss an die Generalversammlung der Kommission in Krakau im September 2017 in Zusammenarbeit mit den polnischen Kollegen einen eintägigen Workshop veranstalten können. In einer intensiv geführten Diskussion werden Themenvorschläge erörtert und gesammelt. Schließlich wird beschlossen, das Thema des Städtevergleichs auf der Grundlage von Städtetypen (Residenz-, Grenz-, Fortifikations-, Gründungs-, Bergbau-, Industrie-, Kurstädte etc.) zu behandeln, wo-bei der Vergleich von ostmitteleuropäischen Städten mit Städten der anderen europäischen Gebiete einen wichtigen Platz einnehmen soll. Die Detailplanungen liegen in Händen der Vorsitzenden der Atlas-Arbeitsgruppe (Ferdinand Opll, Anngret Simms, Katalin Szende) und der polnischen Mitglieder (Roman Czaja, Zdzisław Noga). TOP 3: Ferdinand Opll stellt die seit Juli 2015 im Internet verfügbare Online-Präsentation des gesamten Österreichischen Städteatlasses (64 Städte, die in den Jahren 1982‒2013 veröf-fentlicht wurden) vor (siehe: http://mapire.eu/oesterreichischer-staedteatlas/; auch über die Homepage der Kommission zu erreichen, siehe: http://www.historiaurbium.org/english/atlanti_en.html). Voraussetzung für diese Umset-zung war die Zustimmung sämtlicher Inhaber von Werknutzungsrechten (in Summe mehr als 100 Personen und Institutionen), denen dafür ganz besonders herzlich zu danken ist. Die Online-Präsentation bietet neben der Möglichkeit der Textsuche auch eine Suche in den In-halten der Wachstumsphasenkarten sowie eine Zoom-Funktion für sämtliche Abbildungen. Daniel Stracke, der im Institut für vergleichende Städtegeschichte in Münster seit der vorjäh-rigen Generalversammlung der Kommission in Clermont-Ferrand als zentrale Anlauf- und Kommunikationsstelle für Fragen der Städteatlanten fungiert, präsentiert eine neue interak-tive Europakarte zu den europäischen Städteatlanten, die in absehbarer Zeit auf der Home-page des Münsteraner Instituts verfügbar sein wird. Er ersucht nachdrücklich, ihn mit rele-vanten Informationen zu versorgen und steht auch für Auskünfte zur Verfügung (Email: [email protected]). Des Weiteren berichtet er über die laufenden Bemühungen, bis zum März 2016 beim europäischen COST-Programm einen neuerlichen Förderungsantrag für Netzwerkaktivitäten betreffs der weiteren digitalen Umsetzung europäischer Städteatlanten einzubringen. Anngret Simms bietet einen Bericht von Sarah Gearty (Irisches Atlasteam): Das irische Team (IHTA) hat im Januar 2015 eine „Digital Working Group“ eingerichtet, welche sich um die Erstellung, das Management und die Verbreitung eines digitalen Inhalts sowohl für bereits publizierte als auch künftige Atlaspublikationen kümmern wird. Ziel ist die Reichweite zu vergrößern und Interaktion mit bestehenden und neuen Interessenten zu ermöglichen. Als Teil dieses Projekts strebt das Team bis Ende 2015 an, die bisher veröffentlichten irischen Städteatlanten im pdf-Format (Textteile, Karten 1‒3 der irischen Städteatlanten, Legenden-blatt und Wachstumsphasenkarte; enthaltene Faksimiles werden nicht Teil der pdf’s sein) auf einer digitalen Sektion der Website der Royal Irish Academy zur Verfügung zu stellen. Das irische Atlasteam kooperiert mit einer irischen Scan-Firma namens „Eneclann“, die sämt-liche gedruckten Städteatlanten des irischen Unternehmens für (1) einen online-upload und (2) für Zwecke einer digitalen Archivierung einscannen wird. – Für die künftigen Atlasbear-beitungen ist eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem irischen Vermessungsamt (Ordnance Survey) geplant, wobei schon für den kommenden Atlanten für Galway (Veröffentlichung 2016) onli-

ne GIS umgesetzt werden wird. Dabei ist zu hoffen, dass Kompatibilität wie zugleich eine Weiterentwicklung des digitalen Atlasses von Derry/Londonderry zu erzielen sein wird. TOP 4: Michel Pauly berichtet, dass durch Martin Uhrmacher (Universität Luxemburg), der seit dem Frühjahr 2013 das auf drei Jahre abgestellte Forschungsprojekt "Histoire des villes luxembourgeoises IX" leitet, ein neuerlicher Antrag für die Realisierung eines Städteatlasses für die Stadt Luxemburg eingebracht worden ist. Dieses Projekt wird sich zunächst auf die Überlieferung zur jüngeren Stadtgeschichte, im Wesentlichen des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts beschränken, und der Atlas ist zunächst ausschließlich als online-Ausgabe geplant. Katalin Szende berichtet im Namen von Marjatta Hietala, dass im Rahmen des Scandinavian Atlas of Historic Towns/Finland Sondierungsgespräche betreffs einer Realisierung eines Städ-teatlasses für die bis 1939/40 finnische, seither sowjetische bzw. russische Stadt Wyborg (finnisch: Viipuri; russisch: Выборг) in Kooperation mit russischen Kolleginnen und Kollegen eingeleitet worden sind. TOP 5: Anngret Simms berichtet, dass sie nunmehr gemeinsam mit Howard B. Clarke den aus der Tagung der Royal Irish Academy von 2006 hervorgegangenen Sammelband “Lords and Towns in Medieval Europe. The European Historic Towns Atlas Project“ beim ASHGATE-Verlag fertiggestellt hat. Damit wird zum ersten Mal in englischer Sprache eine umfassende einschlägige Publikation zum Gesamtprojekt der europäischen Städteatlanten vorgelegt: Nähere Informationen finden sich unter: www.ashgate.com/isbn/9780754663546. Einen wichtigen Überblicksartikel zur digitalen Herausforderung für das Gesamtunterneh-men der europäischen Städteatlanten haben Eva Chodějovská, Sarah Gearty und Daniel Stracke unter dem Titel 'The “Digital Turn” of the European Historic Towns Atlas: comparing solutions for digital atlas production and online presentation‘ in der Zeitschrift «Città e sto-ria», X, 2015/1, pp. 89‒121, vorgelegt. TOP 6: DEUTSCHLAND:

Hessen: Gemäß dem schriftlich eingelangten Bericht von Ursula Braasch-Schwersmann sind derzeit bereits 15 Städte im Rahmen des Hessischen Städteatlasses bearbeitet wor-den, und seit 2012 werden die Atlanten jeweils ein Jahr nach Erscheinen der Druckversion auch online zugänglich gemacht (www.lagis-hessen.de). Dabei ist eine Datenbank auf der Grundlage der „Gebäudeindices“ erarbeitet worden, die Möglichkeiten zu weiterführen-den Projekten, wie etwa ein Projekt über hessische Kurorte, bietet. Im Oktober 2015 wird der Städteatlas für Battenberg an der Eder erscheinen, in Bearbeitung stehen derzeit Friedberg, Hirschhorn und Zwingenberg. Finanzielle Zwänge verhindern ein rascheres Vo-ranschreiten. Westfalen: Peter Johanek berichtet, dass im Rahmen des am Institut für vergleichende Städtegeschichte in Münster/Westfalen bearbeiteten Historischen Atlas westfälischer Städte derzeit die Stadt Soest bearbeitet wird.

FRANKREICH: Sandrine Lavaud und Ezéchiel Jean-Courret informieren durch einen schriftlich übermittelten Bericht, dass nunmehr an der Realisierung des Regionalprogramms für den aquitanischen Raum über die wichtigsten Städte der Aquitaine («Les villes-têtes de l’Aquitaine: approches historique, cartographique et comparative») gearbeitet wird, wobei

fünf bereits in den 1980er Jahren bearbeitete Städte (Agen, Bayonne, Mont-de-Marsan, Pau, Périgeux) nunmehr gemäß den Festlegungen für den Atlas von Bordeaux neu bearbeitet werden. Vorgesehen ist die Erweiterung um einen Ergänzungsband, der sich vergleichenden Aspekten und einer Raumanalyse im regionalen Kontext widmen wird. Entsprechend dem unterschiedlichen Bearbeitungsstand ist bisweilen ein schwierigerer Fortgang zu verzeich-nen, doch ist hervorzustreichen, dass sowohl eine Georeferenzierung des kartographischen Materials als auch eine Vektorisierung erfolgen wird. In Abstimmung mit dem Verlag Auso-nius ist folgender Erscheinungsrhythmus vorgesehen: Agen (Dezember 2016), Mont-de-Marsan (Januar 2017), Pau (Februar 2017), Périgeux (Juni 2017) und Bayonne (September 2017). Das französische Atlasteam spricht sich für weitere Bemühungen um ein digitales Corpus aller europäischen Städteatlanten aus, betont allerdings, dass für die älteren 48 Städ-teatlanten (publiziert von 1982‒2003) nur digitalisierte, aber nicht georeferenzierte Versio-nen online gestellt werden können. GROSSBRITANNIEN: Keith Lilley, der nunmehr den Britischen Städteatlas leitet, kann erfreu-liche Fortschritte vermelden: Nachdem der letzte Städteatlas dieser Serie (Bd. III: The City of London from prehistoric times to c.1520) 1989 veröffentlicht wurde, ist nunmehr im März 2015 Bd. IV Windsor und Eton vorgelegt worden. Noch für 2015 vorgesehen ist das Erschei-nen von Bd. V für York, 2016 ist Bd. VI für Winchester und 2017 ist Bd. VII für Oxford geplant. Der Atlas erscheint nunmehr im OXBOW-Verlag. IRLAND: Anngret Simms berichtet vom Erscheinen des neuen Städteatlasses für die an der Südostküste Irlands gelegene Stadt Youghal, der während des Atlas-Seminars vom Mai 2015 präsentiert werden konnte. Das irische Team arbeitet derzeit neben der Bearbeitung der Stadt Galway im Rahmen des Städteatlasses intensiv an der Möglichkeit, die bisher erschie-nenen Atlanten des irischen Unternehmens online verfügbar zu machen. POLEN: Roman Czaja und Zdzisław Noga berichten davon, dass das polnische Unternehmen weiterhin gut voranschreitet. Erschienen sind 2014 die Bearbeitungen der Städte Sando-mierz (Bd. V: Kleinpolen) und Ziębice/Münsterberg (Bd. IV: Schlesien). Schon 2013 wurde die Bearbeitung der Stadt Chojnice (Bd. I: Königliches Preußen und Ermland) südwestlich von Gdansk vorgelegt, und für Ostróda (Bd. III: Masuren) südöstlich von Elbląg erfolgte die Druck-legung vor wenigen Tagen. TSCHECHIEN: Eva Chodějovská berichtet, dass im Tschechischen Städteatlasunternehmen derzeit an Bd. 28 für die Stadt Zlín gearbeitet wird. Im vergangenen Jahr (2014) ist bereits als Bd. 27 des Tschechischen Städteatlasses die Bearbeitung der Stadt Sušice in Südböhmen (unweit der Grenze nach Bayern) erschienen (siehe: http://www.hiu.cas.cz/cs/mapova-sbirka/historicky-atlas-mest-cr/susice.ep/). UNGARN: Katalin Szende berichtet vom Erscheinen des 3. Bandes des Magyar Várostörténeti Atlasz/Hungarian Atlas of Historic Towns, welcher der an der Theiß/Tisza gelegenen südun-garischen Stadt Szeged gewidmet ist. Des Weiteren wird angekündigt, dass der Städteatlas von Buda (bis 1686) bis Ende dieses Jahres (2015) erscheinen soll. Erfreulicherweise sind Finanzmittel für die Weiterführung des Projekts für vier Jahre (2016‒2019), diesmal im Rah-men des Instituts für Geschichte der Ungarischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, bewilligt worden. NACHRUF AUF ANTONI CZACHAROWSKI (1931–2015)

Roman Czaja Am 1. April 2015 ist Prof. Dr. Antoni Czacharowski, langjähriges Mitglied unserer Kommission gestorben. Er wurde am 11. Juni 1931 auf einem Bauernhof im Dorf Czarne Błota in der Nähe von Toruń (Thorn) geboren. Mit Torun war sein gesamtes Privat- und Berufsleben verbun-den. Nach dem Abitur im Jahre 1951 begann er das Studium der Geschichte an der Nikolaus-Kopernikus-Universität. Die sehr guten Deutschkenntnisse riefen schon während des Studi-ums ein Interesse für die Geschichte Pommerns und des Deutschordenslandes hervor. Seine Magisterarbeit über „Den Kampf um den Anschludd von Leuenburg- und Bütowland an Po-len in den Jahren 1454–1526“ erarbeitete er bei Prof. Dr. Bronisław Włodarski. Nach dem Studienabschluss im Jahre 1955 wurde Antoni Czacharowski als Assistent an die Universität Toruń berufen und lehrte an dieser Universität bis zu seiner Pensionierung im Jahre 2001. Seine Forschungsinteressen konzentrierten sich zunächst auf Geschichte der geistlichen Kor-porationen und des mittelalterlichen Rittertums (Promotion 1969 über das Prämonstraten-serinnenkloster von Żukowo/Zuckau). Sieben Jahre später habilitierte er sich mit dem Buch über „Soziale und politische Kräfte im Kampf um die Neumark in den Jahren 1313–1373”. 1977 wurde er zum Professsor berufen. Seit 1979 leitete er die Abteilung für Geschichte des Mittelalters. An der Nikolaus-Kopernikus-Universität übte er verschiedene Verwaltungsfunk-tionen, u.a. Dekan der Fakultät für Geisteswissenschaften 1978–1981 und Prorektor 1982–1984. Nach der Habilitation begann Antoni Czacharowski sich stärker für Stadtgeschichte zu interessieren. Seine ersten Veröffentlichungen auf diesem Forschungsgebiet wurden der Sozialstruktur und Sozialtopographie der Stadt Thorn im Mittelalter gewidmet. Er interes-sierte sich vor allem für die Städte des Ordenslandes in Preuβen und für polnische Städte im Mittelalter. Sein wissenschaftliches Oeuvre umfasst über 120 Veröffentlichungen. 1978 wur-de er zum Mitglied der Internationalen Kommission für die Stadtgeschichte gewählt, an de-ren Tagungen er als Referent und als Diskutant über zwanzig Jahre aktiv teilnahm. In den frühen 1990er Jahren begann Antoni Czacharowski mit seinen Schülern die Vorbereitungsar-beiten für die Realisierung des Atlasprojekts der Kommission in Polen. 1993 erschien unter seiner Redaktion das erste Heft des „Historischem Atlasses polnischer Städte“; bis 2002 lei-tete er dieses Unternehmen. Im Jahr 2002 war Antoni Czacharowski Mitveranstalter der Konferenz der Städtekommission in Torun. Eine Krankheit, die ihn kurz nach der Pensionie-rung schwer traf, hinderte ihn an weiteren Forschungen und an der Teilnahme auf den Kon-ferenzen unserer Kommission. Er bleibt in unserer Erinnerung als vorzüglicher Gelehrte, als engagierter akademischer Lehrer und als guter Kollege verankert.

MEMENTO FOR ANTONI CZACHAROWSKI (1931–2015)

Roman Czaja Prof. Antoni Czacharowski, a longtime member of our Commission, died on April 1, 2015. He was born on June 11, 1931 in a village near Toruń, Czarne Błota, in the family of a farmer. All his entire private and professional life was connected with Toruń. After the Matura exam in 1951, Antoni Czacharowski enrolled at the Nicolaus Copernicus University, where he studied history. His excellent knowledge of German allowed him to develop his interests in the histo-ry of Pomerania and the state of the Teutonic Order. As a participant of the seminar of Prof. dr Bronisław Włodarski, Antoni Czacharowski prepared the thesis about the war of domi-nance of Poland over Lębork (Leuenburg) and Bytów (Bütow) land between 1454–1526. Af-ter graduation in 1955, Antoni Czacharowski was employed at the NCU, where he worked until his retirement in 2001. His research interests focused primarily on history of ecclesiastical corporations and of knighthood in the Middle Ages. In 1960 Czacharowski received his PhD title based on the thesis about the convent of the Premonstratensians in Żukowo (Zuckau). Seven years later he earned his habilitation with his book on social and political parties in the struggle for the Neumark between 1313–1373. In 1977 Antoni Czacharowski was appointed to the position of Professor of Medieval History. Since 1979 he headed the Department of Medieval History. At Nikolaus Kopernicus Universi-ty Czacharowski held various administrative functions, inter alia the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities in 1978-1981 and Vice-Rector in 1982-1984. After his habilitation, Antoni Czacharowski became more interested in urban history. His first publications in this research area were devoted to the social structure and topography of medieval Toruń (Thorn). Czacharowski was particularly interested in the cities of the State of the Teutonic Order in Prussia as well as in Polish cities in the Middle Ages. His scientific oeuvre encompasses more than 120 publications. In 1978 he was elected a member of the International Commission for the History of Towns, at meetings which he always actively participated as a speaker and discussant for over twenty years. In the early 1990s, Antoni Czacharowski and his students started the preparatory work on the realization of the the Commission's Atlas project in Po-land. The first issue of the “Historical Atlas of Polish Cities” was published in 1993 under Czacharowski's editorship; the project was then carried on until 2002. In 2002 Antoni Czacharowski co-organized the Conference of the Commission in Toruń. Disease that has seriously affected him shortly after retirement hampered his further research work and par-ticipation in the conferences of our Commission. He remains in our memories as an excellent scholar, committed academic teacher and good friend.

In 1995, she defended her MA dissertation in Medieval Studies, on “Public Space of Trogir in the 13th and 14th Centuries” (supervised by Dr Janos Bák), at the Central European Universi-ty in Budapest, Hungary; the degree was approved by the Department of History of the School of Arts and Humanities, University of Zagreb in 1997. She spent the summer semester of 1999 as a Fulbright scholar and visiting fellow at the Department of Medieval Studies, Stanford University, United States. In November 2002, she defended her PhD thesis on "So-cial Determination of the Urban Development: Trogir, 1250-1450", supervised by Dr Neven Budak, at the Department of History of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Za-greb. She has been working at the Croatian Institute of History since 1997, and in 2009 she was appointed senior research fellow. Her research focuses on the medieval urban history of the Eastern Adriatic coast (especially Trogir and Dubrovnik), urban social topography and the development of institutions. Recently she teaches courses in urban history at History De-partment on the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Zagreb (since 2012 as Associ-ate Professor) and at the postgraduate programme in Population History of the University of Dubrovnik. CURRICULUM VITAE JAN HEIN FURNÉE (BORN 1972)

General profile Jan Hein Furnée is Professor of European Cultural History at the Radboud University. He studied History and graduated at the University of Groningen, where he obtained his PhD in 2007. He has taught Theatre, Film and Television Studies at the University of Utrecht (2002-05), and was lecturer in Modern History at the University of Amsterdam (2005-15) and part-time professor of history at the Open University (2011-15). His research focuses on urban leisure culture, consumption culture, class and gender rela-tions, and cultural policy in the nineteenth century. He has published widely on topics such as gentlemen’s clubs, concert life, theatre culture, shopping streets, grands cafés, seaside resorts and ice-skating, as well as on the state of the art of Dutch and international urban history. In 2012 he published Plaatsen van beschaafd vertier. Standsbesef en stedelijke cul-tuur in Den Haag, 1850-1890 (Amsterdam: Bert Bakker; 903 p.), analysing in great detail the social dynamics of The Hague’s upper and middle classes in a range of leisure institutions in the late nineteenth-century. Jan Hein Furnée is chief editor of the Flemish-Dutch journal Stadsgeschiedenis (Urban Histo-ry), editor of De Negentiende Eeuw (Nineteenth Century) and Geschiedenis Magazine (Histo-ry Magazine). Since 2010 he has been secretary of the European Association for Urban History. In 2013 he initiated the Amsterdam Centre for Urban History. Prof. dr. Manon van der Heijden is a social historian, working in the field of early modern urban history. She is interested in the history of criminal justice and the family, urban fi-nances, civil society and public services. In 1998 she received her Ph.D. at Erasmus University Rotterdam in 1998, where she worked from 1992–1998. From 1999–2006 she was appoint-ed at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam. Since September 2006 she works at Leiden Uni-versity. She was editor of the The Low Countries Journal of Social and Economic History and she is editor of Crime, History & Societies and Stadsgeschiedenis. “HISTORY OLYMPICS” IN JINAN, CHINA. 22ND CONFERENCE OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE OF HISTORICAL SCIENCES

“History Olympics Come to Shandong” is the title of the article by Wang Quian published in the China Daily on the 14th of April 2015. The 22nd conference of the International Commit-tee of Historical Sciences was described as the world´s most influential academic event of Historians. The president of Shandong University, Professor Zhang Rong emphasized the importance of the conference, which displayed the vitality of Chinese civilization and pro-moted cultural self-confidence, as well as raised China´s international image.1 Liu Yandong, the Vice Prime Minister came to open the congress and read the letter from the President of the Republic of China. President Xi Jinping which emphasized the importance of history in understanding other cultures. The 22nd International Congress of the International Committee of Historical Sciences (ICHS)/Comité International des sciences histories (CISH) was held in China, in Jinan, Shan-dong province from August 23rd to August 29th 2015. ICHS/CISH has never before had its con-ference in Asia. There were approximately 2.800 registered participants from 90 countries of which 937 were outside of China. The conference was organized jointly by the Association of Chinese Historians and Shandong University, Chinese government and Shandong province as well as the city Jinan. The staff of the Shandong University, together with 260 people (in 21 teams) prepared the conference. In addition the organizers recruited 500 volunteers who helped participants at airports, in railway stations and guiding participants to find auditoria. The International Committee of Historical Sciences (ICHS)/Comité International des sciences historiques (CISH) was founded in 1926. The members of ICHS/CISH consist of national committees (at the moment 53), of International Affiliated organizations (at the moment 30) and Internal Commissions (12). Two last ones can be described as thematic organisations. At the Jinan conference there were 4 major themes: China from Global Perspectives, Histori-cizing Emotions, Revolutions in History and Digital Turn in History. In addition there were 27 specialized sessions, 18 joint sessions, 19 round tables and other meetings organized by in-ternational affiliated organizations and internal commissions

Cities and their spaces Our commission (The International Commission for the history of towns) had like the other international affiliated organisations sessions of their own in earlier conferences but from the Amsterdam conference (on 2010) they could cooperate with national committees, pro-pose joint sessions and become part of the main program. That is exactly what our commis-sion made for the Jinan conference. The joint session nr 6 Cities and Their Spaces: new Ap-proaches in Urban Studies and Cartography was organised by Katalin Szende from the Cen-tral European University, Budapest with support our commission and the Finnish National Committee. The discussant for this session was Marjaana Niemi from the University of Tam-pere, Finland. At first Katrina Szende introduced the topic starting from definitions. She in-troduced the work of our commission (The commission for the history of towns), especially the ongoing project Cities and Their Spaces and the project of Historical Atlases. We heard the presentations of paper givers in chronological order. The first presenter was Anna Anisimova from the Institute of World History, The Russian Academy of Sciences, Mos-cow. Her paper concerned Spatial Structures and Their Construction in English Monastic Towns. The second speaker Laurentiu Radvan from Facultatea de Istorie, Universitatea “Al. I.Cuza”, Iasi told on Space distribution in late medieval and premodern town in the Romani-an Principalities, and the next speaker, Preston Perluss from IAE, Universté Pierre Mendés France, Grenoble, lectured on Mortmain Properties in the Urban Environment and mi-croscale neighbourhood social reconstitutions. An important theme uniting these papers was – as the discussant of the session, Marjaana Niemi, pointed out – the intersections of urban space and religion in medieval and early modern Europe and in particular the intersec-tions of urban space and religious institutions or communities. The papers revealed different ways in which these institutions and communities were both the producers and products of urban spaces. In the second part of the session, Salvatore Bottari from the University of Messina spoke about the Sicilian port towns in the eighteenth century: trade, social actors, infrastructure improvements and urban development. The topic of Li Wei from the Shandong University was Gentrification in Canadian Inner Cities: Its Impact on Society. The last speaker was Lars Nilsson from the Institute of Urban History, Stockholm University, He spoke about Urban Space in the Post-industrial Era. In her comments, Marjaana Niemi concentrated on the in-terplay of transnational, national and local influences. The last three papers all discussed, explicitly and implicitly, the ways in which urban space has been produced in the continuous interaction of transnational, national and local influences and forces. The discussion was lively partly because this topic is very good for comparative research, as Katalin Szende ar-gued. It is the first time when so many historians of developing countries were able to come to the conference with financial help of the Shandong University Organizing Committee and of the PVWF, a Dutch Foundation. Never before have so many junior researchers attended a con-ference, many with the financial help of the ICHS. Several younger participants from Eastern Europe as well as more senior researchers who could not receive money from their universi-ties were able to participate in the conference with a support from the mobility fund that had been set up by ICHS/CISH.. The first CISH prize The 22nd conference of The International committee of Historical Sciences will be remem-bered for its global nature, for the excellent organization and for the first prize for historians.

The board of ICH/CISH wanted to deliver a grand prize for a scholar or scholars for his/her or their achievements in history. Our aim was to honor a historian or historians who have dis-tinguished himself, herself or themselves in the field of history by her/his or their works, publications or teaching and has significantly contributed to the development of historical knowledge, in a smaller scale to give a prize comparable with Nobel prize or Field-prize in Mathematics. The CISH Jaeger-LeCoultre prize for history consists of a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso watch and of the medal engraved by a French artist from a model prepared by the Russian painter Iouri Vichnevski. The medal shows the God of History, Kleio, astride the World. The Reverso watch prize can also be considered a very suitable prize for a historian, since the analysis of chrono-logical development is essential to most topics in history. For the first laureate of this prize, the jury selected Serge Gruzinski (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris, France). He is an outstanding scholar who has written many very significant books. Serge Gruzinski is a specialist in the history of Latin America in the XVIth, XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries. He is a pioneer in the development of global history and transna-tional history, which currently represent the main trends in historical sciences. Serge Gruzinski´s publications tell us about the importance of understanding other cultures, reli-gions and different types of behavior. The common specification for his books is interdisci-plinary. I would add to the list also the logo, where you see two people in a carriage. The logo for the 22nd International Congress of Historical Sciences has been selected from a shortlist of 219 artworks since it was opened to public submission in May 2013. Based on the chosen two pieces of works, the organizing committee produced the final version, composed of an aus-picious cloud, which is a typical Chinese element; a carriage from the Han Stone Relief, which embodies the "wheels of history"; and the words "ICHS" and "2015 JINAN CHINA". My own analysis of the people in the carriage received much attention.2 General assumption is that there are two men in the carriage, but in my opinion there is a man and a woman sitting in the carriage. The Jinan conference has shown how successful recent efforts by historians have been in promoting global and transnational history.

SOZIALE FUNKTIONALITÄTEN STÄDTISCHER RÄUME IM WANDEL

Tagung der Internationalen Kommission für Städtegeschichte

in Kooperation mit dem Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung und dem Projekt „Residenzstädte im Alten Reich (1300–1800)“

der Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen Kiel, 15. bis 16. September 2016

– Konzeptskizze und Programm –

Stand: 1. Dezember 2015 In den Jahren 2016 bis 2019 wird sich die Internationale Kommission für Städtegeschichte im Rahmen von vier Konferenzen mit den Funktionalitäten städtischer Räume und ihren Wand-lungen vom Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart befassen. Aufgegriffen werden damit wesentliche Stränge aktueller stadtgeschichtlicher Forschungen, die es in internationaler Perspektive zu bündeln, exemplarisch zu vertiefen und im Ergebnis zu systematisieren gilt. Den Auftakt bil-den 2016 die sozialen Funktionalitäten, die folgenden Tagungen werden sich dann mit politi-schen, ökonomischen sowie kulturellen und religiösen Aspekten befassen. Thema und Struktur Städtische Räume verbinden sich mit vielfältigen sozialen Funktionen: In ihnen begegnen sich Individuen und Gruppen, sie bilden einen Rahmen sich verändernder gesellschaftlicher Organisation, sie stehen im Wechselverhältnis mit spezifischen sozialen Praktiken, sie sind Teil von Lebensform und Habitus. Zugleich richten derartige soziale Funktionen städtische Räume gleichsam aus, sie schreiben situative wie institutionalisierte Kommunikationsprozes-se in sie ein, sie verleihen ihnen in der Verbindung von Praktiken, Objekten und Platzierun-gen vertikale und horizontale Strukturen. Von dieser funktionalen Strukturierung und Verbindung physischer und sozialer Räume aus-gehend, gliedert sich das Tagungsprogramm in drei Sektionen, welche die Prozesse der Be-gegnung und Überlagerung, der Grenzziehung und Separierung, der Ordnung und Hierarchi-sierung aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven in den Blick nehmen:

1. die horizontale soziale Strukturierung städtischer Räume durch Gruppenbildung und Verflechtung, Begegnung und Distinktion, durch die Modellierung von Zentren, Rän-dern und Grenzen, durch die Ausschließung, Zulassung oder Abstufung von Öffent-lichkeit(en) (Sektion I: Mitte und Rand);

2. die vertikale soziale Strukturierung städtischer Räume durch Schichten und Klassen, Abhängigkeit und Bedürftigkeit, durch die Ausbildung, Einübung und Reproduktion von Hierarchien, durch Fürsorge und Kontrolle, Devianz und Konflikt (Sektion II: Oben und unten);

3. die übergreifende soziale Strukturierung städtischer Räume, einerseits in ihren au-ßerstädtischen Bezügen und Überschneidungen durch Transfer, Austausch und Mig-ration, durch die Nutzung und Einbindung des Umlandes, durch die Anziehung, Prä-

senz und Integration außerstädtischer Gruppen, andererseits innerstädtisch in der Scheidung von Innen- und Außenräumen, in architektonisch markierten Formen von Inklusion und Exklusion (Sektion III: Innen und außen).

Die in diesen Sektionen jeweils zu fassenden Vorträge behandeln exemplarisch einzelne Or-te, von denen aus Räume und deren Funktionen erschlossen werden. Zeitlich sind die insgesamt zwölf Vorträge vom Mittelalter bis zum 20. Jahrhundert gestreut. Berücksichtigung finden sollten nicht allein Großstädte und Metropolen, sondern auch klei-nere urbane Formationen. Am Beginn der Tagung steht ein allgemein theoretisch und me-thodisch orientiertes Referat, die darauf folgenden drei Sektionen umfassen je vier bzw. drei Vorträge (jeweils 25 Minuten Referat sowie 15 Minuten Diskussion). The uses of space as well as memorial cultures in a spa-tial context have attracted a particular interest. The con-tributions to the present volume, predominantly written in English, engage with this ‘spatial turn’. They focus es-pecially on the functions of the city (e.g. market, com-

merce) and city development, on the city space and its representation, on the city and its ‘hinterland’, and on the development of urban districts. These topics will be discussed with reference to European cities in the medieval and the modern periods. In der Stadtgeschichtsforschung spielen der Raum, die Nutzung von Raum und die Erinne-rungskulturen im Kontext des Raumes seit einigen Jahren eine große Rolle.
