DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE by Harold Werley Fifteen members/spouses joined the Spring Fling Dust-Off Tour to Sioux City hosted by Harold Werley and Ruth French. The first stop was at Director Harold Werley's shop/auto storage building in Moville. Coffee and donuts were served as club members arrived and an orientation to the day's activities was shared. Through out the tour Harold asked trivia questions for the '40s, '50s, '60s and '70s. If score had been kept I think John Hemmingway would have won. We welcomed new members John and Jo McCarthy from Sioux Falls, SD and enjoyed getting to know them. The next stop was at the Healey Werks in Lawton, IA. It is a family owned business that specializes in concours restoration of mostly exotic foreign autos. The in-house shops we toured are state of the art total restoration units (except plating because of EPA regulations). It was off to lunch at Charlie's Restaurant at the Holiday Inn and a brief business meeting. Disappointment was expressed that 14 memberships have not been renewed for 2012. After lunch we visited the new downtown Sioux City Public Museum and spent the time being introduced to the history and artifacts of Sioux City. Then it was on to Palmer's Olde Tyme Candy Shoppe where we got to be "kids in a candy store." Our last stop of the day was at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center on the banks of the Missouri River. The center documents the exploration of the Louisiana Purchase and provides access into the expedition through interactive displays. Folks left for home feeling they had experienced a good tour. I want to promote our next activity which is the May 19th tour to Eldon and Sigourney Iowa hosted by Gary and La Vonne Gleason. Stops include the American Gothic Museum (the house made famous in Grant Wood's painting) and the Dumont Museum which includes Oliver tractors, pedal cars, Lionel trains and Roy Rogers memorabilia. RSVP to the Gleason's by May 15 at [email protected] or 563-385-4649. Also add a new activity for August 25th. Gene and Betty Upstill will host the Hawkeye Chapter at their farm in Gilbert, IA. Gene intends to also invite the Cadillac and Studebaker folks. Be sure to check the 2012 calendar of events in the previous Dynaflash so you don't miss out. Get that Buick out and have fun.

CAR SHOW FOR VETERANS SATURDAY JUNE 9, 2012

4:00 P.M. MAIN STREET - JEWELL, IOWA

Food, Fun and entertainment For those who might think the Judging Handbook is being thrown under the bus for this event, you are correct. This is not so much about classic cars as it is for raising money for Patriot Outreach and Veterans who suffer from P.T.S.D. (Post Traumatic Syndrome Disorder). Going to the REGIONAL??????? On the way home from our hideout in Texas, Mary and I took a side trip to Hermann, Mo. It is on the way to the site of our Regional and would make a great tour stop for a convoy. Hermann was settled in 1837 and is full of old German architecture. In addition to the architecture, the Germans quickly learned you can’t farm effectively on hillsides, so they grew grapes. The little town of Hermann has eight wineries. They have trolley tours to the wineries and there are also restaurants at some wineries offering German food. Could be a nice stop on Sunday as we return. There is a car show planned by the local car club on September 9 starting at 9:30. Hermann is 92 miles west of the St. Louis area.

This one is for our Studebaker collector, Gene Upstill One of the things Mary and I do as we travel around the USA is stop at Presidential Libraries. During the past winter we had the opportunity to see the George H. W. Bush library in College Station, Texas. I was wandering around when what should appear but this 1947 Studebaker. It was presented to George and his wife upon his graduation from college. The car transported the Bushs, including future President George W., to Texas.

Recently I was reading an article about wrens. I found it interesting that the song of the Bewick’s wren was described as pronounced “Buicks”.

Dumb laws If you are planning to travel to Washington state with nefarious plans, here is an interesting law to keep in mind. Any motorist with criminal intent is required to stop before entering a town and inform the chief of police of his or her presence.

While reading an article in the May 2012 Hemmings Muscle Car about Buick pace cars I came face to face with a smiling Hawkeye member. Alan Oldfield and his wife Joy have an interesting collection of Buicks which includes two INDY pace cars. They include a 1975 and a 1976. They enjoy the experience of driving and displaying these cars along with their GNX and Riviera Silver Arrow.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT HEARTLAND REGIONAL SHOW

Dear Heartland Region Chapter Directors and Others, When in early 2011 the St. Louis Gateway Chapter negotiated their agreement with Holiday Inn for the 2012 Regional Meet we were told that some of the guest rooms were going to be updated. We had no idea that the hotel was going to undergo a complete renovation. All of the guest rooms, public spaces, Malones Pub and Grill, banquet space, meeting rooms and lobby are being remodeled. At this time this renovation is set to be completed and the hotel reopened by August 1, 2012. As a result of the decision to do a complete renovation, all personnel we negotiated with, including the Catering Manager, were let go. We had requested in our agreement that the menu for our Awards Banquet be completed by June 2011. We intended to include the menu with our reservation form so those attending the awards banquet could make a better-informed decision of which Entrée to select. We have been able to prepare a menu with the help of the hotel’s new General Manager and are pleased to submit it herewith. Please make this information available to your members.
