September Services The Vicar writes

The celebration of the Parish’s 150th anniversary was a

day that will long be remembered for all the best reasons.

We were richly blessed. The sun shone and the whole day

sparkled. People seemed pleased to be there and to enjoy

catching up with one another. We had balloons and bunting

and a humungous cake. There was food and drink aplenty,

smiles, laughter and joy. The memorial window gifted by

Hilda Lowery in memory of her parents, Thomas and Rita

Carter, looked stunning. The church-grounds were especially

lovely and the historical displays were a great talking point.

Bishop Victoria presided graciously over our worship

in a packed church. In her sermon the Bishop spoke of the

faith of the first settlers in Canterbury who, as soon as they

had built their homes, set about building churches and

schools so that they could pass on what they knew to be

important to their children. She said, “That is why your

parish churches were built, and why they continue today

despite fire and drought and financial challenges. They stand

as symbols of hope in their communities – beacons of light

shining in the dark times as well as the good times. St James,

and every parish church in Ellesmere, reminds us of the

eternal story of who we are – the people of God – and asks

us never, ever to forget God’s love.”

Thank you to the people of Southbridge who

generously allowed the parish to make use of the 150th

anniversary of the consecration of the first church of St

James as a suitable occasion on which to celebrate of the

beginning of today’s Parish of Ellesmere. This made it a day

on which the whole parish could come together and give

prepare the church, the grounds, the service, the catering.

Round the Parish Sedgemere

Welcome to Spring on Sunday the 30th August at 11.15. with a shared light luncheon.

Irwell Painting has commenced, paint being stripped and the contractors are doing a good job. Fundraising is going very well. An option for a paschal candle stand for St Mary’s is being pursued.

Leeston Things are going well. Wednesday morning Communion has an average of 13 attending.

The church was decorated beautifully for Pat Clausen’s funeral and Betty Chamberlain played very appropriate music.

We had a great service at the start of August with Rev Mike Hawke from the Anglican Missions Board.

Court Theatre Trip

Thank you very much to everyone who supported the recent visit to the Court Theatre to see “Ladykillers”. It was a lovely night out and raised around $600 for the parish. Our sincere thanks go to Lorraine Bampton and Peter Chamberlain for their superb organisation.

Southbridge

Numbers at worship have been good considering the number of parishioners away last month. 3 rd Sunday tea following worship continues to be popular – it is unusual for anyone to want to hurry home. 8 am continues to be a cherished time of quiet worship, backed by Taize music.

The allocated mobility parking at St James has been relocated to the right hand side of the drive, with space for at least 4 cars. The change kept the grounds clear for pedestrians during the Parish and St James Celebrations on August 23 rd.

During September and October the new mobility site will be continued and assessed.

The funeral of Patricia Louise Clausen

at St John’s Church Leeston 14th August 2015

RIP

An Extract from Penny Clausen’s tribute to Pat.

“A Recipe for Pat” Take a whole lot of love

and a mountain of strength Fold them together over a warm heart

Gently add and ocean of kindness Sift in a galaxy of generosity,

a valley of pride and a river of graciousness Sprinkle with a bit of spice.

Add some wit and a few gallons of cheek And savour the flavour for all of your life

This is how you make a Pat—only with the

finest ingredients
