Welcome to the Community of New Hope

A Message from the Council President

December 2018

Greetings, all, and Merry Christmas!!!1

As we wind down 2018, we should pause and reflect on the year we have had here at New Hope.

We were able to come in under budget, mainly due to our expenses being down for the year. We had

wonderful Lenten and Christmas services, and a well-attended VBS. The youth went to the Triennial

gathering in Houston.

On a down side, we lost a staff member who had been part of the backbone of the church, and her de-

parture left quite a void to fill. Thanks to the volunteers who stepped in while we looked for new candi-

dates.

Welcome to Noah O’Ryan as the new Admin person. Öur search for a new Music Director has not been

finalized, but we are close.

I also wish to extend thanks to Charles Nicholas and Larry Dadin who completed their terms on coun-

cil this month.

And a warm WELCOME to the incoming council members, Jill Bussey, Eric Harsh, Daniel O’Ryan,

and Sangeetha Struck.

Nancy Beck has taken over the position of council secretary. A list of council liaisons to the various

committees will be forthcoming.

I just wanted to thank New Hope for giving me the opportunity to serve as your council president, and

worship with you all in such a wonderful place.

Dear Sue and people of New Hope,

Many thanks for your generous donation of 25 boxes for

our Christmas at Sea program. I loved the details of

how lovingly you all carried out this project!

We have already gifted five crews. And the nationalities

on those vessels alone included Filipino, Ukrainian,

Russian, Polish, Bulgarian, UK, Chinese, Turkish, and

possibly others I've forgotten!

Often we're so busy with the logistics of delivering box-

es that there's just no time for photos. (And once the

gifts have been placed in garbage bags for delivery pur-

poses, they're not so photogenic!) But we'll post photos

when we can on our Facebook page. Hope many of you

are already visiting www.facebook.com/BaltSeafarers/.

Thank you again, and Advent and Christmas blessings-

Rev. Mary Davisson, Director

Baltimore International Seafarers' Center

Thank You!

Recently I needed a cat stuffed animal for a chil-

dren's sermon and didn't have one, so we used our

imagination with a tiger. But, magically, the fol-

lowing week, this cat appeared on my desk! There

was no indication who gave it to me, but I do want

to say - thank

you! Deacon Cindy

Dear Pastor Price:

Please share our heartfelt thanks with mem-

bers of you congregation and all of the won-

derful volunteers who participated in the cold

weather shelter this season. Special thanks

to coordinator, Chris Phillips and of course

Kathy Piet for organizing and leading the

program.

We recently received a letter from a former

CWS Client. She wrote” I don’t know how

often you get thanked for the job that you do,

if you do get thanked, but I wanted to say

thank you so often over the years. The work

that you do is amazing and it helps so many

people. Things did not work out the way that

I originally had hoped but I am so glad that

they did not. I am in such a better place than

I was then.” Thank you for making a differ-

ence in the lives of homeless individuals and

families so they can get to a better place in

their lives.

Thank you once again for your partnership.

We are very grateful for you continued com-

mitment to this program.

Sincerely,

Ayesha B. Holmes

Christmas Morning Brunch Can you believe it. This was our 9th year hosting the Christmas Morning Brunch. Thank you New

Hope for another year of providing a meal, fun, fellowship and gifts for our local neighbors in need on

Christmas morning. We hosted about 35 or 40 people who otherwise would have no where to go for a

Christmas meal. We were able to catch up with some of our friends who have been coming to our

brunch for several years. We were also able to meet and make new friends who chose to join us this

year.

Thank you to all the members of New Hope who came to spend time with some of the lost, lonely and

forgotten on Christmas. It truly means a lot to our guests that we care enough about them to open our

doors and ourselves for them when everything else is closed.

Each year the word spreads through the homeless community in Howard County about our Christmas

morning brunch and we keep growing. We almost maxed out the sanctuary this year!!

If you would like to spend some more time getting to know our guests from Christmas, please consider

volunteering at the Grassroots Day Resource Center. New Hope serves breakfast on the 4th Saturday

of each month, 9:30 - 11:45 am. We also supply the volunteers for each of the other stations (shower,

laundry, and pantry, front desk, driving). We need 8 volunteers each time we serve. If you would like

more information about what you may be asked to do while volunteering, talk to Gail Smith (pantry),

Melissa Mack (laundry), Mary Thomas (kitchen and pantry), Bill Thomas (all areas), Pat Piet (driving

and front desk).

If you can’t volunteer on our Saturday, please talk to Kathy Piet about other days the center may need

volunteers.
