STUDENT ACTIVITIESThe highlight of this week has been the Division Athletics on Tuesday. Our team of 30 students performed very well, with some outstanding individual and team efforts. Colac West was voted the best behaved school on the day - naturally. Our T20 cricket team had their first game on Wednesday night and had a lot of fun. CSC visited our Year 5 and 6 students on Thursday to talk about Year 7 and the Open Night. On Friday Rupert is off to the Regional Swimming and we wish him the best of luck. There is a netball club meeting after school also. Saturday is the Kana Parade and Mr Ware is expecting a big turnout of students for our float. Next week we have a performance of African music, Ride2School Day, a Camp Quality performance and Harmony Day on Friday It will be another big week. Thankyou.
PREPS FULL TIMEAll preps will be attending school all day as of this coming Wednesday 19th.

SPORTSome upcoming dates for Colac West Students and District sport are:1. Division Basketball trials April 24th2. Division soccer trials 28th of March3. Division Football & Netball trials Friday 4th of AprilThe District School Athletics event was held last Tuesday at the Central Reserve and we took 30 children who were complimented on by teachers from other schools for their excellent behaviour. If you were there, you would have seen an excellent bunch of children all sitting together representing our school brilliantly. As for results, we did OK given our size. Special performances were Rita winning Shot Put and third in Discus, Mason for second in Discus, Asha for second in Shot Put and Discus and Brooke came third in High Jump. Our 12yo boys came second in the Relay and our 11yo girls came second in their Relay. Anyone who placed in a running event, including Hurdles, won’t know their results for weeks as the times have to be sorted out by the officials and then sent to us to find out who will go on to the Regionals in Ballarat on the 17th of October. So there’s plenty of time between then and now. Thanks to Mr and Mrs Swayn for helping us at Shot Put on the day.
PARENT HELPERSWe encourage you to be part of our team at Colac West by becoming a Classroom Helper. Some people have already taken part in an information session, over the years and we welcome you back again.
Surprising ScienceLast week at Assembly, Matthew Swayn and Jasper Zabala demonstrated how you can poke holes in an inflated balloon. Still don’t believe them? Why not give it a try yourself! As skewers are pointy and sharp please ask an adult to help you with this experiment. You will need: • some ordinary balloons• wooden skewers • people to amazeWhat to Do:Blow up and tie your balloon. You may want to blow up more than one just in case the balloon pops on the first (or second) try.• find the dark part of the balloon - it’s the opposite end to the opening• Hold the balloon in one hand, and slowly push the pointy end of the skewer into the dark part of the balloon • Once the skewer is through, you can keep pushing the skewer inside, and poke it out through the dark part of the balloon near where you tied it off. There you have an amazing balloon kebab! What’s going on?When a balloon is inflated it is under a lot of pressure and the rubber is stretched out so that it is thin in most places on the balloon. Any little puncture can burst them. However, there are two parts of the balloon that can resist a poke and those are the darker parts near the top and bottom. They are dark because they're thicker in those places, and the thick skin lets them form a tight seal around the skewer without breaking (usually!).
