leadership, knowledge and experience that Professor Craven brings to the Congregation, particularly in the higher education sector. Our Grand Prior Archbishop Denis Hart, President of Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference and Australian Catholic University, says Professor Craven encapsulates the true spirit of the Second Vatican Council and its call for greater lay collaboration in the mission of the Church. ‘Greg Craven is an immensely gifted man, a man of faith, a loyal son of Christ; he has given many years of dedicated and faithful service to the advancement of Catholic education in Australia,’ Archbishop Hart said. Archbishop Pizzaballa ordained in Bergamo

The Church of the Holy Land and Bergamo united in joy and thanksgiving on Saturday, 10 September 2016 when Father Pierbattista Pizzaballa OFM, Apostolic Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, was ordained Archbishop in the Cathedral of Bergamo.

“I want to be a bishop for all, for those who are entrusted to me, first and foremost, but also for those who share love and concern for the Middle East, Jews and Muslims, for the poorest, for the whole Church,” said Archbishop Pizzaballa at the end of a solemn and moving liturgy. The Liturgy drew together many of the faithful of Bergamo who, with their prayers, supported the new Apostolic Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate, appointed on June 24 this year by Pope Francis, and ordained Archbishop in his native land.

Sufficit tibi gratia mea (2 Cor 12:9)

“Sufficit tibi gratia mea” – “My grace is sufficient for you” (2 Cor 9:12) is the motto chosen by Archbishop Pizzaballa. Addressing the assembly, he briefly recounted the main stages of his journey of faith, characterized by a continuous “search for simplicity and sincerity”: his happy childhood in Italy, his years in the seminary, his departure for the Holy Land, a land, which – he confessed humorously – had never attracted him and, ultimately, his assignment as Custos. Now it is to the Church of the Holy Land that Archbishop Pizzaballa “entrusts his life”, in service of the faithful and “his” priests. To the latter, he spoke in Arabic. “On my coat of arms, he said, I wanted to put two things: Jerusalem and the Word.” It is a clarion call for the peace of Jerusalem, which, he concluded “is not a peace that suppresses differences, cancels distances, nor is it a truce or pact of non-aggression, guaranteed by agreements or separations. I ask for a peace that is friendly and with sincere acceptance of others, that has a tenacious will to listen and dialogue, to open roads on which fear and suspicion give way to knowledge, to encounter and trust, where differences are opportunities for associating and not a pretext for mutual rejection”. Finally, he promised a personal commitment to service so that “for the whole Church and on the people of the land, there springs up the peace of Jerusalem.” “The Church in the Holy Land has no means and no power. She only has Christ and His Grace”, Archbishop Pizzaballa explains. “The Holy Land is at the crossroads of divisions and difficulties of all kinds: between the Churches, between monotheistic faiths, and between the peoples living there. Such difficulties always seem huge and insurmountable. In this context, the Church appears to be overwhelmed by these situations. Others may be tempted to believe that they are called to bring ‘their own salvation’ based on their means and strategies into the tragedies of that Land. Yet, in these circumstances, the Word of God reminds us that it is to Grace alone, and nothing else, that we should entrust ourselves. The Church in the Holy Land has no means and no power. She only has Christ and His Grace”.

Return to school 33,000 students in Israel returned to Christian schools, facing old and new challenges. The school year in Israel began on 1 September with 33 thousand students divided among 47 Christian schools in the country. The year, unlike in 2015, started regularly, but with the same unsolved problems as last year. The strike in 2015 lasted 27 days. Teachers and students protested on the one hand against the progressive decrease in Christian schools funding and, on the other, against the imposition of school fees applied to the families. A crisis that ended with a promise: 50 million shekels (11.8 million euro) that the Israeli government promised to pay before 31 March 2016, but that has not been received yet. Father Abdel-Masih Fahim OFM of the General Director Office for Catholic schools in Israel noted: “There has been an increase in the inadequacy of all schools, because of the fact that the

government has not paid, and also because we reduced the parents’ fees, which contributed to increase our failure. We began the school year with a huge lack of funds.” On Saturday, 27 August students in Palestine and Galilee returned to Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem schools after the three-month summer holidays. Masses were held for all the Christian students in LPJ schools beginning the new 2016-17 school year. Safe and nurturing day care - the new Saint

Rachel Center in Jerusalem On Monday, 5 September 2016, the Saint Rachel Center for babies, children and youth in the Talbieh neighborhood in Jerusalem was opened. The center is run by the Saint James Vicariate for Hebrew Speaking Catholics to respond to one of the most dramatic needs of the migrant population in Israel, which is for safe, healthy and nurturing day care for their small children.

The Church is also concerned with after-school activities for migrant children integrated in the Hebrew language, Israeli school system. When they finish school, their parents are often still at work. In addition, the parents are unable to assist their children with homework because they do not know sufficient Hebrew. Tens of migrant children are accommodated by the Saint James Vicariate each afternoon for activities and help doing homework as well as times for religious catechism. The Saint James Vicariate has a Hebrew language youth group that meets regularly, bringing together teenagers and young adults who live fully integrated in Jewish Israeli society. Free on Friday evenings and Saturdays, these times can be used for sharing, deepening faith and spending free time together. An important concern is trying to preserve the Catholic faith and identity of youth, prone to assimilate in secular Israeli society. The Saint Rachel Center is on the property of the Capuchin Monastery in Jerusalem. The premises were completely renovated by the Saint James Vicariate, thanks to the assistance of a number of donors, foremost among them the Equestrian Oder of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher, and also including Pontifical Mission, World Vision and the Dear Foundation.

The Martyrs of Jordan Church Inaugurated

Worshippers thronged a new Latin Patriarchate church in Amman, Jordan on Thursday, September 15 named the Martyrs of Jordan Church. This represents the Christian martyrs whose blood was shed on Jordanian soil in the early periods of Christianity at the time which witnessed the Roman persecution of Christians. The inauguration of the church was marked by a Mass celebrated by Patriarch Emeritus of Jerusalem Fouad Twal in the presence of Latin Patriarchal vicar in Nazareth Giacinto-Boulos Marcuzzo, retired Archbishop of the Roman Catholics Yasser Ayyash, parish priest Fr. Hanna Kildani, a number of priests and Knights of the Holy Sepulcher, and a large number of believers. In an address, Fr. Kildani reviewed the stages which led to the construction of the church. The

building and completion of the church, was made possible by the Equestrian Order of the Holy

Sepulcher of Jerusalem, Naber Jordanian Catholic family; Jamil, Shafiq and Issa Naber,

Parishioners and Latens foundation Chile. He said that the construction of a new church in Jordan reflects the security and stability prevailing in Jordan which is attributed to the wise Hashemite leadership and the noble Jordanian people. He continued that at a time when the churches and mosques are demolished in several countries in the Middle East, others are being built in Jordan which signals the peace and love prevailing among all components the society.

Rev. Martin Staszak, O.P., Prior of the Dominican Community of St Stephen’s Convent, and was concelebrated by a number of priests. Also present at the celebration, Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto, Apostolic Nuncio in Israel and Delegate for Jerusalem and Palestine, Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Apostolic Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate, Archbishop Joseph Jules Zerey, Greek Melkite Patriarchal Vicar in Jerusalem and Archbishop Kamal Bathish.

The Liturgy started with the procession of priests of different religious communities and the singing of Latin hymns. In his homily, Fr. Martin Staszak, spoke about the exemplary and extraordinary life of St. Francis who “had nothing to offer but absolute poverty” and who “put his existence in God’s hands” looking always to “seek God as the origin of everything. St. Francis lived the mission of the Church in its entirety. He reminds us that our Kingdom is not on this earth. Our origin and purpose is God,” he added. “Through his life, St. Francis criticized and put the Church on its right path. Today, when we think of St. Francis, we wonder: what is the foundation of our lives and behaviors? ” According to tradition, in a city where there is a Franciscan and a Dominican community, a Dominican friar celebrates the feast of St. Francis in the Franciscan convent, and, vice-versa, a Franciscan friar celebrates the feast of St. Dominic in the Dominican convent. The two Orders were founded at the same time, and have had a very close friendship since the time of St. Francis and St. Dominic. [At the Victorian Lieutenancy’s bi-monthly Mass on 3 October Knight Chaplain Father Simon Grainger celebrated the Feast of St Francis of Assisi. In his homily Father Simon highlighted the role of Franciscans in maintaining the Christian Faith in the Holy Land prior to the establishing of the Latin Patriarch in 1848, including the role of the Franciscan Custos for investing Knights of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre.] Fraternally in Christ, Will Kininmonth KCHS Lieutenant Australia-Victoria
