Jubilee Cup

Well done ladies playing in the Jubilee Cup at Royal Cromer. The weather was perfect. Our hosts were welcoming and the meal enjoyed by all. On this occasion we left the valuable cup with our hosts but we are confident it will be returned to our cabinet next year for our home match.

Winners were Pat Jackman and Pat Wood – well done.

News from the Seniors

We are coming to the end of our season. We played our final inter club friendly against Caister and Great Yarmouth and won comfortably. A credit to the team. Three clubs and a putter were eventually played after the earlier delays. The turnout was modest but was enjoyed by those who did participate.

The Peter Jackson Trophy was also competed for. To date the results have not come in.

The seniors are represented in the Norfolk Nines being played at The Links West Runton. We wish the team well.

I guess the final inter club match has brought some temporary relief on the organisational front. Hopefully we will be able to better organise ourselves in 2018 regarding the availability of players. Royal Norwich have a similar problem as ourselves, but more acute. They have decided

to cut down on the number of fixtures they play during 2018 in an effort to alleviate their situation. One of their cuts is ourselves. We will therefore not be playing Royal Norwich for the foreseeable future – sad really- but a reflection on our straightened times.

I have therefore applied to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for our seniors to be put on the protected list of endangered species!! The seniors versus veterans (23/10/17) has been cancelled.

The captain versus vice-captain is scheduled for Monday 20th November but as we do not have a vice captain this will be reorganised at the next committee meeting and an announcement made as to what form the competition will take. Watch this space.

Straight drives.

Latest Social News

The social events are soon coming to an end for this year and by the time you read this there will only one or two events left on the calendar, more on these later.

The second quiz night earlier in October was successful and enjoyed by all the eleven teams of four that took part. The winners of the quiz night were Keith Johnson, David and Gaynor Houlton and Andy Eaton. Our thanks again go to Brian Shingler and his wife Linda for preparing the questions and answers and for hosting the evening. We hope to see you all again next year and more of you when the quizzes return.

Tuesday Socials

The Tuesday Socials will definitely be ended by the time you read this and they will resume next year on 27th March 2018. If you have never played in the Tuesday Socials, why don’t you come along and find out what it’s all about, join in the fun, meet fellow golfers and make new friends and golfing partners!! Basically, come along at or just after 3.30pm, register with the day’s host (usually Eric), team up with whoever’s waiting and go out and play the ‘game of the day’. The ‘game of the day’ or golf format changes every week with a mixture of straight front or back nine hole stableford and novelty formats. Each week we have small monetary prizes for the winner and runners-up dependant on numbers attending. After the golf you can order and enjoy something to eat from our Chef Phil, who will be more than pleased to satisfy your requirements. At the end of the Tuesday Socials season, all your scores are collated and we come up with an overall winner in the Ladies and Gentlemen sections who are presented with a Trophy each. Lastly, if the above has not convinced you to try the Tuesday Social evenings then maybe this will - if you play in six or more Tuesday Socials you will qualify for a ‘Bangers ‘n Mash’

evening at the end of the season. This is run as part of a normal Tuesday Social but the qualifiers will be entitled to a free ‘Bangers ‘n Mash’ supper after the golf as a way of a thank you for supporting these events. This year twenty eight of you qualified for this meal.

As the Tuesday Social season has now ended, we can present the results:

Ladies Winner Sue CraskeSecond Ruth EptonThird Shirley Davies

Gentlemen’s Winner Rob BowerSecond David Clarke (Snr)Third = Alan EptonThird = Derek Rush

We cannot end this social report without a special word for the person who hosted the vast majority of the Tuesday Socials, Eric Willson. This year Eric has hosted eighteen out of the thirty one evenings and I’m sure he would have done more but for personal reasons. Once again, a special thanks to Eric for hosting these evenings this year and for the forthcoming year(s). By the time you read this Eric, you will have received your voucher but don’t eat it all at once!!

Upcoming Events

The next event is ‘Wild About Norfolk’, an evening talk and films of Norfolk Natural History presented by our very own Bill Drayton. The last time this was held it was very well supported and enjoyed by all. To book your place and choice of meal, booking forms can be obtained from the bar but hurry places are somewhat limited and going fast!!

Our last event this year is the annual ‘Turkey Trot’ on 25th November.

Places are going fast and the last time we looked there were only a few first come places left, so get your name down as soon as you can!! Are we in danger of having to

put up a second sheet like we used to do a few years ago? Watch this space - not literally - but the noticeboard at the top of the stairs if you want to put your name down!!

Social Questionnaire

Thank you to all who completed the questionnaire. Your views were analysed and findings presented to the Social Committee and the Board. The Tuesday Social will continue in its present format (a few tweaks here and there may be introduced), but, as a themed night has proved very popular we hope to trial a Friday Social Themed night throughout the golf season next year. Keep a watch on the diary and noticeboards for news of these events.

Club Cleaning Service

Grips more important than the heads?.... Cleaning your golf grips is essential. If grips are not cleaned regularly it can result in the grips condition deteriorating rapidly, therefore leading to having to change the grips more regularly than you have to.I am now offering a grip cleaning service for just £5 to clean all the heads and grips to maintain the clubs condition.

Joe’s Tip of the MonthPunch Shots

Now that the season is ending and winter is swiftly approaching, the winds will begin to pick up and a controlled ball flight is essential. If you are a facing a shot into the wind, hitting a full shot will more often than not result in a shot with too much spin and balloon up into the air, therefore a controlled punch is required.

Page 9: mundesleygolfclub.commundesleygolfclub.com/MGC Newsletter October 2017.docx · Web viewStableford was won by Maggie Moore with 36 points. Second was Beryl Nash with 33 points –

The way to play a successful punch shot:

1. Play the ball in the middle of your stance, or one ball to the right of centre (for a right hander).

2. Press your hands forward; this will deloft the club therefore reducing the height.

3. Set up with your weight favouring your left side a fraction more, around 60% on your left leg.

4. Retain the weight on your left throughout the swing, and although there is rotation, feel like your arms are hitting the ball.

See on this image how the hands are ahead of the ball at address.
