Journey IN the Promised Land: God's Big Welcome
Sunday Mornings at 10:30 am
This year's theme for our Kids' programs is Journey IN the Promised Land: Jesus Welcomes Us. We will be
focusing on stories of God's surprisingly BIG welcome which extends to lots of unexpected people. In those
stories we find our own journey of hope following Jesus to the promised Kingdom.
Preschoolers: In October, preschoolers will review their Old Testament stories from last year's Journey to the
promised land—seeing how God's welcome is beginning to unfold. They will focus on Moses and the exodus.
Ideas for following up at home:
1. Early Israel was constantly on the move—sometimes involuntarily, sometimes voluntarily. Discuss the whole
idea of moving— what would you pack if you were going on a long trip? You might plan a short vacation for thefuture, talk about how you will prepare for your journey.
2. Build a pyramid out of legos and talk about the Israelites' lives as slaves in Egypt. How would they feel? Do
you think it was hard for them to see God was with them in such hard times?
3. In March we had a Passover meal together and talked about what each of the foods represented. This would
be a good time to review with some simple foods: chopped apple salad (haroset) represents the bricks and
mortar used to build the pyramids; parsley dipped in salt water represents the tears and sweat of the slaves as
well as the hope of new life, grape juice represents the sacrifice of the passover lamb. Remind kids that we
learned Jesus is our Passover lamb.
Gradeschoolers: In Logosland, gradeschoolers will begin studying the Beatitudes (Matt. 5). The Beatitudes arereally all about God's Big Welcome: they are a list of sometimes surprising, unexpected sorts of people who are
blessed to be welcomed into God's great kingdom. Through reading and studying the beatitudes, our prayer is
that kids will come to see how they, too, are included in God's Big Welcome.
Ideas for following up at home:
1. Discuss the whole idea of "welcoming". When have you felt welcome? When have you felt unwelcome?
What things make you feel welcome? How does God welcome us?
2. Involve your kids in cleaning or decorating your front door or walkway together to make it welcoming. Kids
might make a sign, wreath or welcome mat.
3. Invite someone to have dinner at your home. Discuss how you can make your guest feel welcome. Involve
kids in decorating the table to welcome your guest.
All ages: For both age groups, this might be a great time to talk about contemporary refugees. What is their
journey like? What is hard? Mark on a world map some of the places that are experiencing displacement now —
where are the refugees coming from? Talk about what people are doing to welcome refugees (especially Syrian
refugees right now). Learn about what your family can do at worldvision.org/Syria.

Mighty Memorizers Mighty Memorizers is a program to encourage kids to learn one memory verse per month, related to
their Sunday School lessons. At the end of the year we will honor our memorizers in a big
celebration. Our October memory verse is also this year's theme verse: Welcome one another, just as
Christ has welcomed you. –Rom. 15:7. Take time to discuss the verse as a family and what it means.
Challenge the whole family to learn this important message together. Kids can recite their verse to any
of their Sunday School group leaders any time throughout the month.

Join the Urban Ministries Team!
Do you care about issues of peace and justice? Our UMT seeks to partner with our neighbors in
bringing healing & restoration to our community, and we are seeking 2-4 members to help discern
God's leading in two key areas:
• Homelessness: PasCov sponsors a bad weather shelter (BWS) for the homeless in Pasadena. We
are looking for someone to partner with team leader Wayne Walker to organize, recruit & equip our
enthusiastic volunteers. (Most of the responsibilities will be seasonal: Nov.-Feb).
• Madison elementary/food closet: PasCov has a great history of partnering with our local
elementary school to provide food and tutoring. As the program and needs of the community have
changed, we have taken a step back, with the food closet on hiatus, to discern how best to partner
with these neighbors moving forward. We are seeking 1-2 new team members to join us in this
process.
If you'd like to know more about the Urban Ministries Team and how you can join with us in
community with our neighbors, please contact Wayne Aoki or Vikki Randall.
