Editors Corner
Dear Friends,
Since the last issue of our newsleer many things were changed. First of all,
new Editor-in-Chief was chosen. Grega Stavbar will be now responsible for
this important medium of ISPRS Student Consorum. Krzysztof Stereczak
become ISPRS SC Co-Chair and now he has new responsibilies but he will
be acve in Newsleer crew as an advisor.
Some changes were also made in ISPRS SC structure. If you visit our web-
site you can noce that new Board Members were chosen and new Re-
gional Coordinators were asked to cooperate. During XXI ISPRS Congress,
ISPRS Student Consorum Statute was established. 3rd ISPRS SC and WG
VI/5 Summer School was successfuly carried out. Once again people fromaround a world had a chance to meet and exchange experiences. You can
nd all the informaon in this issue of Newsleer and on our web page.
In this issue you will nd reports from 3rd Summer School in Nanjing and
Youth Forum in Beijing, interesng interview with one of the summer school
lecturers Prof. Dr. Armin Gruen and other regular and new columns.
As the number of SC members is growing, so is the number of students and
professors who help us in order to make our Newsleer beer with every
issue.

placeatNanjingNormalUniversity,Nanjing,ChinafromJune26thtoJuly1st.ThetopicwasAcquision, processing and representaon of three-dimensional geospaal informaon, which is the trend of online3DinteracverepresentaonofgeospaalinformaonasleadedbyGoogleEarthandVirtualEarth.Thistopicaractedstudentstonet-workbased3Dmodelingandvisualizaonoftheworld.Thetechnolo-gies of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing inevitably present auniqueopportunitytosuchapplicaons.

ISPRS SC is Acve in Central America
CentralAmericarecentlyhostedatwo-dayworkshoponAirborneLaserTechnologyandDataProcessing,sponsoredbyISPRS.ThisworkshopwasaachedtotheXIIISelperSymposiumthattookplaceinHabana,Cuba,
onSeptember2008.Thirteenstudents,includingthe2regionSC coor-dinators,receivedhelpfromISPRStoaendboththeworkshopandthesymposium.Thiswasanopportunitytoestablishcontactwithresearchersandremote-sensingprofessionalsfromalloverLan-America.Fromthisinteracon,wecameupwiththeiniavetocreateawebspacespecictotheregionundertheframeworkofISPRSSC.WewereveryexcitedtoseethegreatinterestshowninjoiningtheConsorumduringthisevent.

allaboutSCeventsandSCacvies.Atthatme,ahottopicwasthe3rdSummerSchoolinNanjing,withthethemeAcquision,processingandrepresentaonofthree-dimensionalgeospaalinformaonandXXIstISPRSCongress2008,whichwasheldinBeijing.Iwasabletojoinbotheventsthissummer.SummerSchoolandCon-gresswasagreatopportunitytobeapartofonebig,internaonalfam-ily.ThereImetmanyfriendsfromotherconnents/regionsfromallovertheworld.Weexchangedalotofgreatandhelpfulideasandinforma-on.Itwasveryinteresngandexcingexperience,sincewepossess
dierentwaysofthinking.Sociallifewasalsoveryfruiul;wesharedfoodinorientalstyles,wewenttopartyinChinesebarsanddancedallnightlong.Itwasveryfunnywhenstudentsfromothercountriesstartedtousechopscks;sincetheyarenotusedtoeatwiththem,theyfacedsomedicules.Buthowever,alltheproblemswithwayofeangwerepassedinaweek.IntheendofCongressonestudentrememberedagreatidea;heusedchopscksasasouvenir;hecollectedallhisfriendsname/signatureonit.Professors,whichnameswerebeforefamiliartousonlyonreferencepapers,gaveinteracvelecturesduringtheSummerSchool.Wewere
abletomeetthemandtospeakwiththemaboutallthethingswewerecuriousabout.Itwasveryexcingtospeakwithsuchgiantsofourpro-fession!Amazingly,the1stSummerSchoolwasheldintheEurasiancountry,Tur-key;the2ndwasEuropeancountry,Sloveniaandthe3rdAsia,China.I reallybelievethat StudentConsorumbringsnorth-east-south-westculturaltransaconandknowledgeexchangestoallthepeopleanykindinvolvedintheorganizaon.

Asian Conference on Remote Sensing(ACRS)willbeheldfrom10thto14thofNo-vember,2008inColombo,SriLanka.Theconferencedealswithresearchfromvari-ouseldofgeoinformaon.TheconferenceisannuallyheldinAsiancountriessince1980.
Duringthe21stcenturyACRSisdevelopingintoamatureorganisaonprovidingnotonlypaperswhichcontributetotheregionaldevelopmentbutalsoplayinganim-portantroleinculturalexchangeintheregion.ACRS2007wasorganizedinKualaLumpur,Malaysia,12-16,November,2007with863parcipantsfrom38 countriesandregions.TheconferenceisjointlyorganisedbylocalhostsandAARS(AsianAssociaononRemoteSensing);furthermore,parcipaonofgeoinformacsusercommuniesisincreasing.Inthisincomingconference(ACRS2008),ISPRS-SC,anewstudent-orientedunitun-

ThisshorttutorialdemonstratesthecreaonofoverviewmapsforanylocaonontheglobeperformingafewsimplestepsulizingQGIScapabilitytouseWebMappingServices(WMS).ThefollowingstepswereperformedusingQGISversion0.11.0MesandshouldapplyonanyoperangsystemwithaworkingQGISinstallaon1.Please,investsomemetoreadtheUserGuide2.
Lets start!1.LaunchQGIS(fromaterminalbytypingqgisorfromthegraphicalmenu)
2.SelecttheAdd WMS Layerbuon(alternavelyselectfromthemenuLayer >AddWMSLayer...orjusthittheWkey)
3.SelecttheNASA(JPL)3 server and hit Connect.Severallayersprovidedbythisserverwillshowup.
4.Addforexamplethelayerentledglobal_mosaic.ThenacvatetheaddedlayerinthelegendandhittheZoomFullbuon
5.Zoom-intoanareaofinterestor,ifyouknowthecoordinatesofyourinterest,justgothere!
LoadtheZoomtoPointpluginfromthemenu:Plugins > Plugin Manager...>(scrolldowntotheendofthelistandacvatetheplugin)ZoomtoPoint> OKLaunchitbyselecngitsbuonandenterthecoordinatesofyourinterest(e.g.14.1E,13.5NforLakeChad)andzoominorouttogetthedesiredextentforyourmap.
6.Youcanaddanewvectorlayeranddigizeapointforthelake:
Layer > NewVectorLayer...(orpresssimplytheNkey)>typeaName and select the Type String > Hit the Add values manually
