Thank you to all students and families for supporting The Lost Dogs Home fundraiser yesterday. We raised a total of $950.00 all of which will be going towards purchasing bedding, blankets and towels. Congratulations to all of the Wedge Park Community for your support of this great cause.

How Can I Help Build My Child’s Numeracy

As parents, you play a significant role in your child’s learning by setting expectations, nurturing curiosity, and encouraging a love of learning. You can help build your child’s numeracy through doing the following:

• be positive about their numeracy experiences and praise effort and perseverance • let your child know that everyone can be successful • seize everyday opportunities to capitalise on numeracy development • involve your child in numeracy-related activities • describe what you are doing in situations that involve numeracy • explain why you make certain numeracy choices • explore numeracy with your child • learn alongside your child and encourage a sharing of numeracy ideas and thoughts.

Helping children to become numerate does not need a high level of mathematics. It means:

• encouraging children to try, then keep trying • encouraging children to think (reason) • supporting children while they do homework (which means encouraging them and taking an interest,

but not doing the thinking for them) • modelling numeracy with children (including interpreting data, charts and diagrams) • talking aloud when solving problems (every day or mathematical) • getting children to check their answers (Does this answer make sense?) • encouraging children to help with

o cooking (especially measuring out ingredients) o paying bills & shopping o scheduling events in the day o reading maps and giving directions o measuring –– and thanking them for their support

Do not say “Maths is hard” or “I was never good at maths”. Numeracy capability is not inherited but attitudes are contagious. You can find more information about helping your child at home with numeracy here: https://numeracyguidedet.global2.vic.edu.au/numeracy-at-home/

Influenza

It’s reported that the flu is going to be especially prevalent this winter and we are already starting to see the first cases within the school. Please keep students suffering from the symptoms listed below at home. Sending sick students to school not only puts further stress on their bodies, putting them in danger of developing more intense symptoms, but also puts other students and their teachers at risk. Symptoms of Influenza:

• Chills, shivering and fever • Headache • Muscle aches and pains • Sore throat • Stuffy or runny nose • Sneezing • Dry cough • Tiredness • Trouble breathing If you experience any of these symptoms, you should avoid contact with other people wherever possible. If you are concerned about your symptoms, or they become worse, you should seek medical advice immediately. Five ways to prevent spread of influenza: • Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough • Wash your hands regularly • Do not share personal items such as towels or eating utensils • Clean surfaces • Avoid close contact with others

Parent Opinion Survey 2019

We want our parents to tell us what they think! Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. Approximately 270 parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous. This year the Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 22rd July to Sunday 11th August. The survey will be conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only takes 10-15 minutes to complete. For further information, please visit: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/teachers/management/improvement/Pages/performsurveyparent.aspx

TEACHING & LEARNING REPORTS

Year 2/3 This term the Year 2 and 3 students will be focusing on knowing their Individual Reading Goal and how to practise their goal. Students have started using a Reading Goal book, where they will have their goals and strategies written down. Students receive time every day during Independent Reading to practise their goal. During Reading time, students will meet with their teacher for a conference to show them how they have been practising their goal regularly throughout the term. It is wonderful seeing students choose a range of texts to go in their new Reading Tubs and demonstrating a real passion for Reading. It is also great to see students practising their reading regularly at home and bringing their diary in to show their teacher.

Digital Technology Students in years 2 and 3 have continued to be supported with the use iPads in their classrooms.

Year 2 students have been clarifying words and asking questions about their reading using Seesaw, following procedural text in Explain Everything to draw Melvin the Monster to identify the requirements of procedural texts and they have also been planning narratives using Popplet.

Year 3 students have been using Popplet to sort their understanding of living and non-living things and using Keynote to help answer literal questions in selected texts.

Year 6 students continued to be supported with building Bloxels games based on a famous character. They are now working on building their creativity and collaboration skills with LEGO and Sphero.

Year 4 This term in Mathematics the Year 4 students are learning about Multiplication and Division. The students are currently exploring the various strategies that can be used to solve a Multiplication equation. Students have been encouraged to trial several different strategies in order to find ones that work best for them. The strategies also continue to build the students’ knowledge of number facts the connection between other number areas. There is now a greater emphasis on using mental strategies rather than an equation to solve a problem. Last term students explored strategies around addition and subtraction. You may start to see some of these strategies being included in weekly homework. Maybe next time your child is doing some Mathematics homework you could ask them about the strategies they used to help solve the task and how it helped them with their thinking. Year 5 The Year 5 students work on Problem Solving each week during Mathematics. The emphasis is on the students using a strategy that is the most efficient way for them to solve the particular problem. The goal of these lessons is to build student knowledge around the various strategies that can be used to solve any problem and to develop their skill in efficiency eg. to move away from drawing all the elements of the problem to using skip counting or an equation, a more efficient method. It has been wonderful to see students being prepared to trial new strategies and explain their thinking and reasoning behind their work. Maybe next time your child is doing some Mathematics homework you could ask them about their thinking while they were working the task out. Problem Solving is important because-

• It places the focus on the student making sense of mathematical ideas. • It encourages students to believe in their ability to think mathematically. • It allows students to work at their own pace and make decisions about the way they will explore them. • It provides ongoing assessment for teachers that can help them make decisions around what is next

for each student’s learning. Below is an example of the type of problem the students work on

SPORTS NEWS GIRLS YEAR 5/6 NETBALL On Tuesday 23rd July, the Wedge Park Year 5/6 Girls Netball Team went to Arnolds Creek to participate in the Divisional Netball Competition. All the girls tried their hardest and displayed great sportsmanship throughout the day, towards both opponents and umpires. Throughout the day the girls also displayed great sportsmanship to their own team by encouraging each other and cheering each other on. It was a great day by all.

GIRLS YEAR 5/6 FOOTBALL On Wednesday 24th July, our girls football team played in 3 hard fought games, in the district stages. It was amazing to see the girls using what they had learnt in the previous games and building on their understanding of the game to produce an even better whole team effort. The results show that we managed to win two games and lose one really tough one, but seeing the improvement and how much they all enjoyed the day makes every girl who played a big winner on the day! Well done to everyone, you should feel really proud of your efforts!

OSHCLUB

Hello Families, Welcome back to Term 3! We hope you all had an amazing break over the school holidays and are feeling fresh and energized for this term. The school holiday program was a success, the children got to enjoy an excursion to the Melbourne Museum, Imax and to Rabbit Hole Playcenter. They also got to engage in a couple of incursions, building their own Billy Go-Cart using woodwork and learning about fresh fruit and vegetables in our Jamie Oliver Incursion. We hope all that attended the school holiday program had a great time! We have lots to look forward to in Term 3. The plan is to continue to explore and learn about each other’s culture/traditions and backgrounds, get involved into the community further and begin to develop our herb and vegetable garden behind the portable. Other News: The staff have been working very hard in developing their knowledge and understanding to successfully support children in their development of team building skills, problem solving skills, building resilience and managing their emotions. Allison and Zoe have attended a couple of network meetings regarding challenging behaviour and are working closely with the Inclusion Agency to ensure all children are receiving the best support possible. We will also continue to add activities, games and resources into the program to support this learning and development for your children. Important Reminders: If your child has any kind of diagnosis such as asthma, anaphylaxis, allergy or behavioural issue, it is important that you inform the service and provide the service with the necessary medication prior to your child attending the service. This is to ensure your child is safe and is being looked after the best they can be while at the service. If you do not provide the service with the above, your child can not attend until you do. How to Enrol: An online Oshclub enrolment must be completed via our website (oshclub.com.au) prior to your child’s first attendance. If you require any assistance with this process, please feel free to phone us at the program so we can help you further. Making or Cancelling a Booking: Once enrolled, bookings can be made online up to 24 hours prior to the commencement of the session for before and after school care. Late bookings can only be made by calling our Customer Service and Billing Team on 1300 395 735. If you are having trouble getting through on the phone the email address is [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you and your children at the service.
