The feelings of rapture as the end of an era draws nigh tempered by the harsh reality that this also brings their final VCE examinations closer. We wish our students well for their remaining time at St Brigid’s and hope that their focus and effort never wane from the ultimate purpose of many long years of secondary education. It is an exciting time as we bring one school year to an end while concurrently planning for 2018. It was most pleasing to see our Unit 3/4 students actively engaged in extra classes, seminars and trial examinations during these holidays. The feedback from the staff who supervised these examinations was of excellent student application with the key now being to focus on the feedback offered and to continue to complete practice examinations and trial essays. Successful students will complete at least 10 trial papers in each study they undertake. From today the students have 10 school days remaining and I wish them well as their 13 year formalise school educational experience draws to a close. Dear Parents, Fourth term brings mixed emotions to our Year 12 students. WELCOME

We welcome to the Horsham community Sr Manuela and Sr Tirsa, Baptistine Sisters who have established their first Australian Foundation Community which will be named after their Founder “St Alfonso Maria Fusco”. Bishop Paul Bird celebrated Mass last week and during the Mass, the Baptistine Sisters community was formally recognised and established. We wish the Baptistine Sisters well in their endeavours of assisting the Parish of Ss Michael and John’s and the wider Ballarat Diocese.

JAPANESE TRIP

Japan has survived the visit by our staff and students over the holidays! In talking to a number of the staff and students who participated in the trip, it was a most moving, exhilarating, exhausting and eye-opening adventure. The numerous photographs on our Facebook page clearly illustrate the wonderful experiences had by all. There is a comprehensive “Japan Trip” report in the newsletter for your reading. Congratulations to all participants and to staff members: Jeni Allen, Chiara Serena, Kate Farnham and Cameron Pickering who planned, supported and supervised our students. Well done to you all.

FETE DAY

Our Catholic Missions College Fete was an outstanding success. As a whole school event we, in a tangible way, bear witness to the Gospel messages of justice and equality. Just under $2500 was raised and will be used by Catholic Missions to provide, support or educate communities through long-term development programs focusing on key areas such as health and hygiene, water supply and sanitation, housing, teaching of job skills and environmental awareness. Many thanks to Lesley Lannen and the VCAL students for their organisation of this fete and to our homerooms who supported the event with their stalls and activities.

SOCIAL

There was a great spirit evident at the Social held last term. The way students entered into the “90s Blue Light Disco” theme and the interesting dancing and clothing styles were outstanding. It underlines the fact that students can engage in a fun-filled night of celebration without falling into the trap of thinking that alcohol and other substances are necessary to have a good time. Thanks to Naomi Gash and the SRC for their organisation.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Congratulations to the following students:

To Mia Panozzo (Yr 11) who has been accepted for a short term exchange program to Italy (departing in November), through World Education Program, Australia (WEP). Well done, Mia.

To Shaun Longstaff (Yr 10) who over the holidays represented Victoria at the Australian Fire Cadet Championships in Sydney. These championships promote values such as teamwork, leadership and community spirit. Well done Shaun.

To Kyra Clarke (Yr 9) was awarded the inaugural Student Citizen Award on behalf of the Order of Australia Association, Horsham Branch. This award was presented to Kyra for displaying outstanding community spirit through her involvement in a range of volunteer activities. Well done, Kyra.

ACER TESTING

In Week 2 of Term 4 (October 16-20) students in Years 7-10 will undertake specialised Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) testing in English, Maths and Science. Testing is done annually to support teacher assessment of student learning and to help develop teaching and learning programs that are personalised and individualised to the needs of our students.

ACER assessments are online and completed during class time. All students will need to have their iPads/devices fully charged and in working condition. Please contact the school as soon as possible if you are experiencing difficulties with iPads/devices.

HEADSTART 2017

We will once again be implementing HEADSTART, an academic program that supports students’ transition from one academic year to the next. This program provides educational advantage to all our students by strengthening their academic skills through the commencement of the next year’s coursework in the last two weeks of the current school year. This program will commence on Monday, 27th November, conclude on Friday, 8th December and involves the participation of all students from Year 7 to Year 11.

The implementation of HEADSTART benefits Senior School students as they will be better prepared for the rigours of VCE requirements, enabling them to undertake senior studies with confidence and success. This program also assists students in better utilising their time after the examination period and provides opportunities for subject/elective changes before the start of the new academic year. By starting next year’s coursework at the end of the current year, senior students will be better prepared to undertake independent study during the Christmas break.

The benefits of HEADSTART for Middle and Junior school students are that students engage with learning in a meaningful and effective way, and thus be realistically prepared for the demands of the year ahead. In addition, the program ensures a smooth transition for your child into the next year level.

As a part of HEADSTART, each student will be provided with their new class group allocation and timetable. Teachers will prepare coursework, learning experiences and assessment tasks that cover the requirements of the following academic year. Work begun at the commencement of the HEADSTART program in November of the current year may contribute to assessment and reporting for the year ahead.

SUNSMART

Our clear expectation is that all students must own a College hat and wear this hat at recess and lunch-times. I urge parents to ensure that their children possess an approved hat or purchase one from Lowes in the Plaza. These hats are not meant to be a “fashion statement” but a functional protection against the sun.

COLLEGE ADVISORY COUNCIL

The AGM of our College Advisory Council will be held in the boardroom on Wednesday, October 18th commencing at 7.00pm.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to staff members, Cathy van Dyk, on a further addition to her family, a handsome grandson, Louis and Lorenza Natividad, a member of our cleaning staff, on a further addition to her family, a beautiful granddaughter, Selynn.

DEEPEST SYMPATHY

We offer our prayerful support to Kennedy family on the recent death of Brendan Kennedy, Uncle of Grace (Yr 12) and Will (Yr 10). Our prayers and thoughts are with you all at this time.

Yours in the community of St. Brigid’s College Peter Gutteridge Principal

BUS TRAVELLERS—2018

Application for Permission to Travel—Eligible Students forms have been issued to all students this week that travel to/from school on buses. Please ensure that you collect this form from your child, complete and return to our school by next Friday 20th October. Karen Barnes, Bus Coordinator Horsham College will be collecting them the following Monday. If this form is not returned, the assumption is that you no longer require this service in 2018.

Japan Trip!! Japanese Visitors next year!!!

Well, we did it!! 19 members of the St Brigid's community, including a former teacher of Japanese at this school, Jess Curtis, who now teaches at Mary MacKillop in Mildura, spent the entire school holiday period in Japan!

18 months in the planning, it included mountain climbing, temple visiting, souvenir shopping, whole days at Disneyland and Universal Studios, souvenir shopping, learning and reflection on war and peace at the Hiroshima Peace Park and Museum, castles, palaces, Bullet trains, and stairs, stairs and more stairs as we negotiated the train and subway systems of each city! But the highlight of it all was the visit - too short - to our sister-school of Matsudo International High in Chiba Prefecture. Here we were welcomed by the entire school at a full school assembly, feted by the English Language Club at a Welcome Party, and warmly looked after by our selected host families. But the connection with Matsukoku went deeper than that, wonderful though it was. As we stepped through the doors from Customs into Japan that first morning we were met by a half a dozen former visitors to St Brigid's from the 2015, 2016, and 2017 visits from Matsukoku to St Brigid's. We arrived in Japan at about 6 a.m. that day. Some of these students had risen at 4 a.m. to catch trains to make sure that they would be at the Airport on time to meet us!! This is tangible evidence of the depth of the connection between our students and theirs: the personal relationships that form when Matsukoku student groups live with us for three weeks each July are strongly maintained and hugely important to the young people from both countries! For the next three days - our entire time in the Tokyo-Chiba area - all the strain of navigating Tokyo by train and subway was taken from Ms Allen and Ms Serena as our young student guides showed us around the areas we had planned to visit.

And on our return to St Brigid's there was a phone-call on behalf of a school in central Tokyo in the Shibuya district asking if we would be able to host a group of ten or so students in March 2018 around the long weekend (March 8th - March 20th).

Can we? The answer depends on you, Community of St Brigid's! If we can offer host families from our school for this period of time, the Languages Department will support and plan a full program of activities, classroom observation periods, and excursions. But we must have a definite number of committed host families established within the next three weeks. The students coming will be of both genders, so you can ask for a boy or a girl, and will all be 14 -15 years old ... approximately Year Nine level, in our system. Please think about this opportunity, discuss it with your families, and get back to Jeni Allen within the next ten days if you would like to register an Expression of Interest. Jeni Allen Languages

Tonight the Young Vinnies group will be holding a Sleepout at school beginning at 6.30pm. They will gather to eat soup and sandwiches which will be supplied by the St Vincent de Paul Society members, followed by some social justice activities and a movie. On Tuesday Year 9 students participated in a MINDFULNESS MATTERS WORKSHOP, a VCAL initiated program. It was a whole day event held at the Coughlin Park Community Centre. The focus of the day was to give students the opportunity to experience positive strategies that can help to deal with periods of stress anxiety. These included exercise, listening to music, pilates, methods of breathing, healthy eating, taking time out and talking. In small groups the students rotated through boxing, pilates, mandala coloring/drawing, walking/hacky sack and self-concept sessions. Students also attended a Legal Aid session which addressed Online Safety and Consent. Students finished the day with a show bag containing a range of information about mental health and an increased awareness of ways of dealing with anxiety. The workshop was a partnership between St Brigid’s College, Headspace, LLEN and Victoria Legal Aid. Boxing sessions were run by Amanda Wik and Pilates by Tracey Skinner.
