Welcome back to Term 2. We have a fun filled term planned full of science, Life Education, Small Sticks hockey, Moa
and Kiwi swimming, cross country and culminating with our Mātariki celebrations.
We have welcomed Lisa Stratford to our school. Lisa has taken over the teaching and learning in Room 15 and is
really enjoying the class. Margaret Zlatkov has started the new entrant class in Room 2 and currently she has 10
children. Kirsty Parun is releasing Margaret on a Wednesday as Margaret is on Associate Principal release.
This week the Life Education caravan arrived on our top playground to help us with our health education
programme. For those of you who haven’t come across this mobile classroom Charlotte Klemick the Life Education
Educator will hold an open afternoon next Monday 15 May 2.30-2.50pm. Life Education is a charity that educates
and empowers children to make healthy choices so they can live full and healthy lives. Every year they
teach over 250,000 children about their body, friendships, their identity, food and nutrition and
helpful and harmful substances. Each class in the school will be visiting the
classroom at least twice.
Here are the areas the syndicates are focusing on:
Moa - Food and Nutrition
Takahe - Peer Pressure
Kiwi - Friendship
Tui - Friendship
You can find out more at http://www.lifeeducation.org.nz/in-schools/ourprogramme
Next week we are holding our school cross country. There is some work being carried out down in the lower park of
the Prince of Wales Park and we are in the process of finding out whether we can use the park as our course. We will
let you know later in the week where the venue is going to be. In the meantime the children are busy practising
around our school. The date for our school cross country is the 19th May (postponement 26th May).
Thank you to those of you who came along last Thursday night to share your ideas around our building
developments. We are collating these and will share these with you in due course.
There is a Fair Planning meeting tonight at 7pm in the staffroom, you are most
welcome to come along. We are planning to hold this event on Sunday 26th November.

WRITERS CORNER
The Lighthouse By Beckett Harland, Room 3
At Easter, we went to an old lighthouse perched up on a sharp and steep cliff.
The steep stairs up were old and rickety. Up where the lighthouse perched,
the wind blew the sand in large balls into my face. They burst as they hit. On
the way back, we went to a shop. I got a collection of shells and a dried-out
starfish.
Over the month we have generated 140.90 Kilowatts, this is enough to power 5 laptops, 140
microwaves and 280 irons. We also have saved 27.48 kg’s of CO2!
To keep this up, please power off any electric appliances that are not in use.
Thank you, from the School Gen and Environment team.
Just a friendly reminder about ‘litter-less lunches’, keep your rubbish in your lunchbox and put in
your bin at home.
School Gen Update
The Underwater hockey season is underway with the first two (of eight) tournaments for the
year being played. Seven of the 2016 Brooklyn School students have gone off to college – many
now playing for secondary school teams – and we have sixteen new (mostly) Year 6 students
practicing and playing games. Underwater Hockey is energetic and some of the best players
can hold their breath for quite some time. Newer players take time to get used to this so we are
rotating the newer players through with the existing players as one large team.
Tournament#1 (T1)was played in mid-March (nine school teams involved) and Tournament 2
(T2) was played on the first weekend of April (eleven school teams involved). In both
tournaments, Brooklyn came fourth. Both good solid results with the team rebuilding and
welcoming new players.
However, in T2 in April Brooklyn had a brilliant round robin group winning all four of their
games well. In the semi and final games the opposition teams only got one goal more, and in
the final game, Brooklyn narrowly lost on a “golden goal” shootout. Awesome effort and
everyone was shattered afterwards. Great team effort!
Congratulations to the players for the last two tournaments: Rory B, Emma G, Hamish S,
Mathieu E, Emma, Nick J, Clare S, Jessica G, Jacob Wilson and Dom Heitger (first game and
giving it a go).
We have six more tournaments for the year and will strive to get as many new players through
into the team so they can enjoy the game (s) and we can improve on our results.

Every week we are going to feature some children involved in our Moa Mentor Programme which takes place every week during lunchtimes on a Tuesday. The purpose of the initiative is to pair up a younger child with an older student mentor from year 7 and 8. The role of the mentor is to help the younger students in a range of different ways relating to the needs of the child. This could involve sharing a common interest, playing games, helping them adapt in social situations or generally being a good role model. This week we are featuring Charlie and his mentors Eva and Brooke. They enjoy doing activities like cooking, electronics, Lego and playing tag. Here they are decorating cupcakes. Eva and Brooke enjoy Charlie’s company and mention that he is smart, creative and that he likes to have fun

Learn conversational Mandarin with Ni Hao Children's Community!
Brooklyn School children are invited to register for a free trial in Term 2. Free trials involve
attendance at two classes (8 and 15 May), which is important if your child has not been
regularly exposed to a language other than English.
In Term 2, classes will be held at the Brooklyn Scout Hall on Mondays 4:30-5:20pm,
beginning Monday 8 May. Through games, fun activities (hands on and real life
conversations, so there are no colouring in activities or worksheets!), raps, singing and role-
playing, your child will learn Mandarin as an Additional Language and have the chance to
use it with their classmates.
Your child's learning is individually evaluated and considered during planning and there is a
set curriculum so you will see language progress.
