TaeKwon-Do, Building a more peaceful world

You know that TaeKwon-Do is a powerful

martial art when taught correctly & applied

with proper training. It is, however, so much

more than that...

Apart from being a fun activity, and

learning very useful self defence skills, and

getting fit, strong, flexible, powerful and

athletic, TaeKwon-Do has a strong moral

philosophy, the fundamental values of which are

completely universal, ‘Generally be a good person in all aspects of your life’.

The TaeKwon-Do Oath has makes a lot of sense:

“I shall observe the Tenets of TaeKwon-Do”

“I shall respect my Instructors and Seniors”

“I shall never misuse TaeKwon-Do”

“I shall be a Champion of Freedom and Justice”

“I shall build a more peaceful World”

Now, the Banstead TaeKwon-Do classes, while strict at times, have a

strong sense of group spirit, I am sure you’ll agree. This is the start of doing

good things: friendships, a supporting environment, respecting seniors are

all encouraged - all of this we hope transfers to outside of the training hall to

start building more peaceful local communities. This is building a more

peaceful world from the ground up.

The physical training has an aspect of

this too: exercises are given not necessarily

just to build strength or improve body

conditioning but to build strength of

character in the student. Students learn to

beat their internal opponent through hard

training, forging a tough body through

repetition after repetition, focusing the mind

with each move of a new Pattern - the intention being that when leaving the

Dojang the student realises that all people are equal, everyone finds

TaeKwon-Do difficult, but steady improvement is made by regular training.
