Trustees

Big Changes in Gelganyem Trust

Mandangala

Chairperson of Gelganyem Trust Ted Hall has left and Ralph Gerrard is replacing him as the new Mandangala Trustee. Thankyou

to Ted for all of his hard work to get the Trusts strong!

Outgoing Chairman Ted Hall

"Hello everybody, This is my last Message to you for Gelganyem Trust, I have stepped down since the last meeting in May and Maria Morgan and Helen Pinday was elected as Chair's, Sharing the role, It has been a Great experience working for our mob and delivering some good projects to the region, I believe we can go on with strength and determination because we have the will to do so, Lots of luck and best wishes to the Trustees, Admin and Dawang groups." Forever in the Northeast, Ted.

New Independent Trustee in 2008

Gelganyem’s Male Independent Trustee, Ian Williams, is leaving and Tony Jack has been chosen to replace him. Thank you to Ian for all his work on the Kilkayi and Gelganyem

Trusts.

Tony Jack and outgoing trustee Ian Williams

Ian Williams

“I have been asked whether I’m happy to finish my job as a trustee of the Gelganyem and Kilkayi Trusts. Yes and no. Yes because it has been a rewarding and enjoyable experience meeting and working with people in the Dawang and to be part of the development of these trusts. It’s always good to be associated with success. The undoubted success is in large part due to the enthusiasm and wisdom of the trustees – the capable chairmanship of Ted Hall, the strong administrative support and contribution of RPM and the ongoing commitment of Argyle Diamonds. However now is the time to hand over to a new Trustee. Tony Jack, taking my place, will bring new ideas and enthusiasm to both trusts. The decision for the trust to develop it, and administrative support, a number of new trustees, and new programs will result in many changes and challenges. Now is the right time to hand over to some one who will provide these skills in this period. I thank my fellow trustees for their friendship and wish Gelganyem and Kilkayi many years of continued great success”.

What’s happening with Gelganyem projects

How is the Trust’s money going?

We have talked a lot to Plan B mob who look after our funds. Their advice is that we keep investing they way we have been and the money will grow

again and be good for the future. As reported in February, the stock market went down. It is still not going up again but Plan B, the people looking after our money, say we should keep doing what we are doing. The money will start to grow more over time. We are hoping that Terry from Plan B will come up for our next Relationship Committee meeting and talk more about our money.

Charitable Trust It has now been a year since Gelganyem Trust has got charitable Status which means Gelganyem does not have to pay tax and can use the money for community development projects and keep investing the Future fund for projects for a long time to come. Thanks to Argyle Diamond Mine for all their help with talking to the tax office.

Forward in Business (FIB)

Forward in Business is about helping to get Dawang businesses up and running. Two businesses have been getting help and advice through FIB which is being paid for with money the Trustees got from the Office of Aboriginal Economic Development. We are now looking at other businesses for FIB to support. Ones we are looking at are:

• Caravan Park at Cockatoo Springs – Bilbildjing/Balaburr

• Mechanical workshop at Warmun - Jalangarnany

• Contracting business around Wyndham – Dun Dun

• Earthmoving contract at the ADM – Yunurr Contact Rick, Executive Office, if you have Business Ideas you want help with.

Ribinyung aquaculture

Gelganyem Pty Ltd

New Business Arm for Gelganyem Trust through this business we want to put in for contracts at the mine, and be able to invest in property, buildings and other businesses. The idea is to make money.

Renal Health

With funding from Gelganyem Chrissie Fiegert has been working out of OVAHS talking to TOs about looking after their kidneys. She came to the February Trust meeting to tell us all how things were going and talk about some TV ads about healthy lifestyle that will soon be on TV.

Gelganyem has been paying Chrissie’s wages for almost 2 years. Now the State Government will take over paying for Chrissie. Trustees and MG Corp now plan for a Renal Dialysis unit in Kununurra so TO’s don’t have to go to Perth or Broome for treatment.

Clontarf program We are still funding the Clontarf High School program at KDHS and Clontarf has asked Gelganyem to help fund their new primary school program for year 5, 6 and 7 boys.

Clontarf Boys in Timber Creek

Girls program

Michelle Pass has been working on the Gelganyem Trust’s Girls Program Research. Special thanks go to all the women who helped. Over 130 people have been interviewed. We talked with teenage girls, parents, caregivers, community members and service providers about the reasons many girls do not attend school. We asked for ideas for programs that would encourage the girls to engage in education. We talked about how young mothers could go back to school and what help they may need with their children. We talked to people about Aboriginal students who do well at school and what they need to help them get on with their education and jobs.

The Girls took a trip to Darwin, thanks to MG Corp.

Youth well being

Boys in Wyndham Wyndham is about to host an exciting photo exhibition by talented local young people. The amazing photos, taken in January this year, represent the young photographer’s experience of growing up in the East Kimberley, and are accompanied by their insightful stories. Supported by the Gelganyem Trust, the exhibition has evolved out of an ongoing partnership between the local community and the University of Notre Dame. At the invitation of community leaders, groups of students and staff from the university spend two months (January and July) living and working within the community. Presently there are groups in Wyndham and Oombulgurri with plans to also visit Warmun. The exhibition represents an important milestone and cements the relationship for future collaborations. For further details and exhibition dates please contact RPM on 9169 2651.

Youth Council Gelganyem Youth Council met for the first time in early November and we have had another meeting a few weeks ago. For the next few months we are going to have meetings at the mine once a month with the Youth Council.

Youth Council reps are: Mandangala Bernadette Hall Simon Tiltuwum Mika McLennon Yunurr William Ramsey Dun Dun Colleen Morgan Balaburr Edmund Calwat Bilbildjing Matara Brown Neminuwarlin Desley-Anne Jessell

Holiday program Gelganyem funded 2 Dawangs to run holiday programs for April school holidays. Dun Dun ran its program out at Oombi. The program events ranged from sport carnivals and discos in the community plus fishing, hunting, and camping trips out at the back country.

Lots of fun to be had for the kids on country!! Gelganyem is funding 4 Dawangs for the July holidays - Dun Dun, Yunurr, Bilbildjing and Balaburr. Thanks to OVAHS and their report.

Adult Literacy Gelganyem invites Dawangs to come up with project ideas, even if the project challenges there skill levels because Gelganyem can get ICV to work with you to gain the literacy skills. Some community members at Mandangala are going to work with an ICV person to restore photos and download photos of school systems and print them then put them into albums that will be labelled and put into the library that is shared by community members and students.

ORIC is in town and if any Dawangs want to learn how to keep there corporation healthy then Gelganyem can use the Adult Literacy program to support you to run your corporation better.

Caravan for ICV Volunteers We have bought a caravan so ICV people will have somewhere to stay when they are working in communities.

Helping out Community At the May Trust meeting it was agreed that Gelganyem would give money to the Kimberley All Starts basketball team to help them go to a competition in Darwin. The trust is funding Garnduwa to help with a Youth Leadership Camp for boys and a sporting program for girls. Gelganyem is funding KDHS to help pay for a driver so a bus can go around and pick up TO kindy, year 1 and year 2 kids to make sure they get into the habit of going to school from the beginning.

Station Skills Program Gelganyem is funding the development of a station skills program for youth. Boyd Curren from Queensland who set up Riversleigh Station skills program for Cape York Trusts is coming to the East Kimberley to talk to stations about a partnership with Gelganyem to have Dawang youth live and work on the station. This program will be for boys and girls.

work. • Trust money matters such as

investments and interest. • The job of the Relationship

Gate list 08 At the Relationship Committee meeting in May, Dawang groups got together to update the Gate list for 2008, for Argyle Diamond mine access to country.

Goodbye to Alan Tietzel At the Relationship Committee meeting in May, Argyle's Alan Tietzel said goodbye to the Traditional Owners as he announced that he was leaving Argyle. Alan is going to work for Rio Tinto Aluminium in Darwin. During the Agreement making process, Alan became known to many of us as he led the Argyle team through the negotiations. He recently recalled how difficult some of those days were for everyone but even after some long days of negotiating, relationships were built that are still strong today. The co-chair of the Relationship Committee, Tim O'Neill, thanked Alan for his long contribution to the Argyle Participation Agreement from negotiation through to implementation. Tim also said that Alan has been a great champion for the Traditional Owners of the Argyle lease area within the business, the community and government. We wish Alan good luck in his new job in the Territory and thank him for his great efforts in helping to build a strong agreement and look forward to seeing him back in the East Kimberley from time to time.
