June 29, 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians of Ridpath Junior Public School students:

I am writing today with some very disappointing news regarding construction of the new Lakefield District Public School (LDPS).

As you know, we have been working with Steelcore Construction Ltd since April on this exciting new school. Up to as recently as Tuesday, Steelcore provided repeated assurances to both school board staff and our project architect that, while a tight timeline, they felt it was possible to have the project completed by September.

At the weekly site meeting with the company yesterday, their representatives presented us with a new schedule that identified a construction completion date of December, 2017.

We can’t express to you enough our anger and disappointment in this news. We feel betrayed and misled, and we understand that you, the members of our school communities, will also feel the same way.

Steelcore committed to a contract for this project fully aware of our target date, and we continued to work towards this shared deadline throughout these last two months. We shared progress updates with you in good faith, based on their assurances.

While the company has cited unexpected underground plumbing issues as the reason for this revised schedule, we will continue to work with them throughout the summer break to advance this project to completion as soon as possible. We will explore all avenues at our disposal to compel Steelcore to expedite their work, and get students in their new school as soon as possible.

Given the timelines for this project, we had already developed and communicated a contingency plan to house all new Lakefield District Public School students at the current Ridpath PS school facility. We will now put this plan into place and are letting you know that all students will be at Ridpath PS to begin the new school year.

We also sincerely regret that we are sharing this news on the last day of school. We felt compelled, however, to provide this information as soon as we could after our meeting with Steelcore representatives yesterday.

We appreciate your patience as we move forward with this exciting project, and know that, when completed, we will have an excellent facility that will greatly benefit students for years to come.

Sincerely,

Jack Nigro Superintendent of Education

Dear Vendor:

RE: 2017 Curve Lake Traditional Pow Wow

The Pow Wow and Culture Committee has enclosed the pre-registration package for vendors for the Curve Lake Traditional Pow Wow which will be held on September 16 and 17 this year. Once again we are expecting a huge attendance at this year’s Pow Wow. We had well over 6000 people visit the Pow Wow last year. We expect everyone will again have a tremendously profitable weekend.

We are assigning locations to accommodate with your three preferred choices. If you feel that your booth is going to be larger or double the space given (12 ft x 12 ft), then you must pay double the price. We can only assign locations to those who have paid in advance so get your payments in as early as possible to avoid disappointment. You may also email a scan of your certified cheque/money order to [email protected] or fax a copy to 705-657-3413. If you choose to pay by credit card, please call our finance department at 705-657-8045. You will still need to contact me to ensure your chosen site is available prior to paying. The cost remains the same this year at:

Craft Booth $175.00 (limit of 50 spaces) Food Booth $300.00 ( limit of 15 spaces)

The Pow Wow and Culture Committee really appreciates the vendors and your contribution to making our Pow Wow a success year after year. Our commitment to you is to work our hardest to ensure the Pow Wow is a positive and profitable experience for you. We look forward to seeing you at the Pow Wow in September.

Sincerely,

Anne Taylor Cultural Archivist Curve Lake Cultural Centre

What is Habitat for Humanity? Habitat for Humanity brings communities together to help

families build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership.

Who can apply? Habitat for Humanity is open to all legal residents of Canada currently living

or working in the region for at least 1 year.

Partnership - not Charity: Contrary to the myth, Habitat for Humanity does not give away

homes - homes are sold to our Partner Families. With a little help, Habitat homeowners can

achieve the strength and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves and their

families.

Sweat Equity: Each selected Partner Family will volunteer a minimum of 500 hours of what we

call “Sweat Equity” which must be completed prior to moving into a Habitat home. Families will work on their own home and may work on the homes of others, in our office, in one of our ReStore

locations, or at fundraising events. Sweat equity is an important way for future homeowners to demonstrate their commitment to home ownership and participation in the partnership of Habitat

for Humanity. At no time will any family or volunteer be compensated for this volunteer activity.

No Interest Mortgage: The home is purchased from Habitat for Humanity with a no interest

mortgage. The mortgage term is usually 25 - 35 years. The mortgage has a number of special

terms, such as requiring that the homeowners remain the principal occupants of the home and

keeping it in proper repair.

The Partner Family’s monthly mortgage payment will be set at 25% of their gross income.

The Partner Family is also responsible for the payment of insurance, maintenance and all costs

associated with owning and operating a home.

COMMUNIQUÉ

TO: First Nations Leadership

FROM: COO Executive Office

DATE: June 20, 2017

RE: FIRST NATIONS DELIVERY CREDIT IMPLEMENTATION

REGISTER NOW IN ORDER TO REMOVE DELIVERY CHARGES BY AUGUST 1ST

On May 31, 2017 the Province of Ontario passed the Fair Hydro Act that will lower electricity bills by 25

per cent on average for all residential customers in the province. This Act also provides the foundation

for the First Nation Delivery Credit: The First Nation Delivery Credit will provide First Nation on-reserve

households with additional savings through a 100 per cent credit of the delivery line on the monthly

electricity bills.

The Chiefs Committee on Energy has been working with the Ministry of Energy to implement the First

Nation Delivery Credit for an implementation date of July 1, 2017. First Nation on-reserve residential

customers that are currently registered with their Local Distribution Company for the HST exemption

will be automatically eligible and enrolled to receive the First Nation Delivery Credit.

To ensure all First Nation on-reserve residential customers receive the First Nation Delivery Credit in

the most efficient manner, the existing HST exemption system will be used to identify eligible First

Nations on-reserve residential customers. First Nations on-reserve residential customers that are not

currently registered with their Local Distribution Company to receive the HST exemption are

encouraged to register as soon as possible.

We are asking First Nations leadership to assist by communicating that all First Nations on-

reserve residential customers, need to ensure that they are registered with their Local

Distribution Company to receive the HST exemption in order to receive the First Nation Delivery

Credit. Those First Nation on-reserve residential customers who are registered with their Local

Distribution Company prior to July 1, 2017 should see the removal of delivery charges starting as early

as August 2017.

For First Nation on-reserve residential customers that are not currently receiving the HST exemption,

please have them contact their Local Distribution Company or visit the Chiefs of Ontario website at

http://www.chiefs-of-ontario.org to access further information.

For any further questions or concerns, please contact Amy Lickers at the Chiefs of Ontario at

[email protected] or at 416-597-1266
