From The Pro
Summer is here! I hope everyone has had a chance to get out and enjoy the golf course and the cool swimming pool. With summer being here, we know that means a good chance of afternoon thunderstorms. We have an alarm system in place that we ac-tivate when there is lightning within 5 miles of the club. When you hear this alarm, we ask that you return to the clubhouse where it is safe. When this alarm activates, we will survey the course to ensure everyone is off the golf course and out of the pool, until it is safe to return to your position. I am sure some of you want to hit a few range balls between laps at the pool; this is just a friendly reminder that you must be in dress code on the range. A collared golf shirt and golf shorts or pants are required on the range, just as it is on the golf course. If you have any questions, please do not hesi-tate to ask me or my staff; we are happy to assist you. Zac Tilton

Golf Course Superintendent Briane Faletto The process of verti-cutting the greens has be-come one of the most important tasks we perform on the golf course. Verti-cutting helps remove the grain from our TifEagle greens and also helps to make them smooth and firm to achieve a better roll. Our goal is to complete this process every Monday; it needs to be done weekly. The verti-cutters get down into the crown of the plants and stands them up. We rotate the directions every week. Then, we double cut the greens after the verti-cutting process to cut off the leaf blades that have been stood up by the verti-cutters. Once the double cut process has been completed, we sand the greens to fill the lines left by the verti-cutters to smooth the sur-face out. Then, we roll after the topdressing with the brushes down to help get the sand into the surface of the turf. We follow that rolling with another roller without brushes to ensure a smooth putting surface. The final step is to water the greens. This helps ensure the sand is settled and cools the greens down af-ter all the stress and traffic on them. This surface management process is vital in keeping our greens smooth and at a target speed of 10 on the stimpmeter.

The Alice Network by Kate Quinn
"Solve for X." That's the phrase invoked repeatedly by Charlotte "Charlie" St. Clair, the brainy college student at the center of Kate Quinn's exciting new novel, The Alice Network. In the aftermath of World War II, Charlie is thrown together with a veteran female spy from the previous war in a high-stakes journey to locate disappeared figures from the past. Unsolved puzzles and cryptic riddles crop up like weeds in a bomb crater, and as math-whiz Charlie puts it, "There was always an answer and the answer was either right or it was wrong." But her adventures turn out to be messy, non-formulaic and not so black and white, which after all is what makes life — and novels — interesting.
The year is 1947. Charlie's posh Bennington College existence gets de-railed by an unwanted pregnancy. Her domineering French mother hauls her off to Europe, heading for a clinic that will take care of her "Little Problem," as she calls her condition throughout the novel. En route, Charlie hatches an alternative plan — to track down her beloved cousin Rose, lost somewhere in France. In Europe, the "hangover of war was still visible in a way you didn't see in New York." Rose is a refugee amid a horde of dis-placed persons, a single grain of sand on a blasted, nearly obliterated beach, but Charlie is determined to "solve for X" and find her. Please join us on July 17th, just show up!!!
