Why not hit the parks in style this summer with Ottavio at the ready! In fact much of the Mediter-ranean diet is rather suitable to camping and travels well with little or no need for a fridge! Here’s a list of some items that would be perfect for that long weekend away in one of our beautiful parks:

Cheese, like its kissing cousin butter, can survive a night or two out of the fridge with no risk to your health. Of course some are better suited for the ride than others and here’s a list of the hardiest!

Parmigiano & its ilk: Grana Padano & Vaccha Rossa (Un-Pasteurized, ITALY)Aged Pecorino (Pasteurized, ITALY)

Crotonese , Idiazabal and Aged Manchego (Pasteurized, SPAIN)Allegretto (Pasteurized, QUEBEC)

7 Year Old Quebec Cheddar (Un-Pasteurized, QUEBEC)

Tis the season for Camping, Picnics, BBQ!

Cowboy Coffee par excellence!Long secret of many a refined camper is the durable “Moka Express” to brew the perfect cup o’ joe that is grit free! Available in 3 sizes (prices vary by size) this porta-ble stovetop brew kettle works with preground coffee (we sell Lavazza & Illy, arguably the most popu-lar in Italy) and requires nothing more than water and a heat source. Inquire within if you have never heard or seen the “Moka Express”.

Galloping Goose SausageWhether you are camping or at home with the BBQ, few foods fare better than a tasty sausage off the grill! Located in our freezer and packed in pairs, the crew at Galloping Goose produce many differ-ent styles to meet all preferences. If you are camping why not cook off a few extras to have right away and save any cooked links for the next morning’s potato hash? Or the lunch pasta? A few of our favourites are:Andouille, Curried Chorizo, Breakfast, Southern Sage & Turkey, Hot or Mild Italian.

Andrew’s Summer Cocktail (OK, two cocktails to be precise, they were so easy, I had to double up.)

1. Pisco or Cachaça, Aranciata & Lime - this one was created out of desperation and a lack of fruit juice last summer in the depths of Fernwood.

2. Prosecco & Crodino. Prosecco has gained great popularity in recent years as the celebratory tipple of choice and aperitivo before a meal. Crodino is a non-alcoholic herbal drink popular in Italy & only recently on hand individually or in 8 packs at Ottavio in the deli. This recipe makes the Prosecco go a little further & the bubbles a bit more flavourful.

*1.5 oz sugar cane liquor from S. America (I prefer Capel Cachaça if you can find it) over a glass of ice cubes, juice of at least 1/4 lime, top with Aranciata Italian sparkling orange juice, stir & enjoy.

*1/3 bottle chilled Crodino in a flute glass topped up with cold Prosecco. A beautiful & elegant start to any social gathering.

*for a quick refresher in the middle of the day pop a Crodino & pour over ice by itself and find renewed vigour! Crodino is also great with white sweet vermouth over ice.....can you tell I love Crodino?
