As I menoned in last weeks newsleer, we need to connue our sensible approach in implemenng recommended pracces especially in social distancing, sanisaon/sterilisaon and COVID-19 tesng where appropriate. These measures need to be undertaken within an environment where fear, worry and anxiety are reduced by a friendly and posive learning atmosphere. Over the last 24 hours, ten new cases of COVID-19 has been confirmed in Australia. Eight of these are from Victoria. We need to remember that Victoria is Australias most densely populated state in terms of populaon per square kilometre. This is the main reason why Victoria is doing so well having had the highest number of tests conducted with the lowest rate of infecons idenfied. Our state authories are to be congratulated on maintaining this high level of vigilance. We need to do our part in maintaining our efforts. In one of my first pandemic commentaries, I compared Australia with Canada. These two countries have many things in common. On 23 rd March, Australia had 1,682 cases compared to Canada s 1,469 cases. Because of Canadas internaonal cross-infecons, they now have 95,048 cases, 7,676 deaths and 682 new cases today. Because of Australias isolaon, we have had 7,240 cases, 102 deaths with 10 new cases today (8 of these in Victoria). I wish Canada a speedy recovery. I encourage all students, staff and parents/guardians at Emerson to keep up your great work. Best wishes for a relaxing Queens Birthday long weekend. Congratulations to all members of our school community for your positive approach during our ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter, we need to continue our sensible approach in implementing recommended practices especially in social distancing, sanitisation/sterilisation and COVID-19 testing where appropriate. We will continue our study of the value Compassion next week. The news coming out of the United States this week of the rioting and looting in major cities as a result of angry and violent people demonstrating about the death of George Floyd is very disturbing. I was reminded of a speech that the late Senator Robert Kennedy made after Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968. Martin Luther King dedicated his life to loving his fellow human beings. He peacefully demonstrated for equality and justice for all. His famous speech, ‘I have a Dream’, is well known throughout the world. Mr Kennedy’s words are as relevant today, as they were 52 years ago;

‘What we need in the United States is not division; what we need in the United States is not hatred; what we need in the United States is not violence or lawlessness; but is love, and wisdom, and compassion toward one another, and a feeling of justice toward those who still suffer within our country, whether they be black or they be white.’

We all need to be compassionate toward one another. We should seek to understand and not judge. Compassionate people extend a helpful hand and raise others to greater heights.

Many people in our community are anxious about all things to do with the Covid-19 pandemic that is currently sweeping the world. Let’s lessen their load by providing more compassion toward them. Dianne Wright Middle School Campus Principal

Mr Ryan Tindal—Teacher of MSJ

I have been the classroom teacher of MSJ for the past 7 years and love it at Emerson School. I am passionate about health and fitness and workout at the gym everyday.

1. What is your favourite thing about working at Emerson School? My favourite thing about Emerson School is the positive, kind and helpful students and staff. It is such a wonderful place to work and I feel quite lucky to have a job that I love. I feel privileged that I get to have a positive influence on student's lives.

2. What is your favourite sporting team? I barrack for the Melbourne Demons.

3. What is your favourite food? Pizza & Mexican dishes are my favourite foods.

4. Do you have a pet and if so, what animal and their name? I have a dog at home named Missy.
