    Student Wellbeing Surveys

In coming weeks our Grade 4, 5 and 6 students will complete

a wellbeing survey. Wellbeing is one of the goals of the

Department of Education and a continual focus for us at

Illawarra Primary School. Over the past year the DoE has

designed and trialled a number of ways of gathering

information in relation to student wellbeing. This survey will

provide all students, grades 4–12, the opportunity to share

views on their own wellbeing. The survey results will help

schools to understand the wellbeing needs of students and

for the Department of Education to support these needs.

    2019 Book Week

Today’s Book Week activities were a wonderful celebration

of the importance of reading and the joy this learning

experience provides. This year there has been a change to

the school’s Book Week approach of how we share the love

of reading across the school. Students were still encouraged

to come to school dressed as their favourite book character.

However, to further reinforce the importance of reading, all

students were asked to participate in a book swapping

exercise where they bring to school books that they no

longer read. This approach has enabled the school too

quickly and efficiently set up what is basically its own book

fair. We owe a huge thank you to Mrs Wendy Anderson for

being the driving force behind the idea and to all other staff

and students who helped set up the book swap in the

    school’s GP room.

    Congratulations Xavier and Rohan

It is always pleasing to hear when students from Illawarra,

past and present, excel in their field of expertise, and last

week I received a letter to say that Xavier B and Rohan W

had been selected to compete at the National Clubs

Gymnastics Carnival. There are also a number of past

students who have been selected to participate in the same

event on the Gold Coast later this term. Congratulations to

Xavier and Rohan for your outstanding achievement.

    Winterfest

Just a reminder that this Friday the school is holding its

Winterfest Winter Feast. This is sure to be a wonderful

evening and I encourage everyone to attend. Students have

been busy making lanterns and practising their performances.

The School Association, class parents and volunteers will be

providing a delectable array of foods. Thank you to all

members of the School Association and Staff who have

contributed to the planning of what should be a great night.

    Regards

    Nick

Attention: Parents and Carers of students in Grades 4 – 6.

Student Wellbeing Survey The wellbeing of our students is important to us.

To get an understanding of how students across

Tasmania feel about their own wellbeing, students in

Years 4-6 will be taking part in a wellbeing survey.

The Student Wellbeing Survey is part of the

Department of Education’s Child and Student

    Wellbeing Strategy.

The details for the survey are:

    When: Friday 30th August

    Who: Students in Grades 4-6

What do I need to do: You and your child don’t

need to do anything. The survey will be done in class

time and will not require your child to prepare in any

    way.

A letter with more information was sent home with all

Grade 4-6 students on Tuesday of this week,

including Frequently Asked Questions and a form to

sign and return to the school if you do not want your

child to participate in the survey.

If you would like further information, please contact

Mrs. Kelly-Bounds via the school office.

Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our

learners are safe, feel supported and are able to

flourish, so they can engage in learning.

Young Archies – Portrait Competition 2019

Each year the students of Illawarra Primary are encouraged to create a portrait to coincide with the timing of the National

    Archibald Prize.

This year each class displayed their portraits within the classrooms and to celebrate their creativity the students will enjoy

a “Gallery Walk” around the school.

Congratulations to Sam, Mason, Stella, Isaac, Luka, Monty, Abbie, Stella, Joshua, Christian, Ocean,

Alex, Molly, Matthew, Henry and Jack on their works being selected to represent Illawarra at the

Statewide Young Archies Competition. All competition entries will be on display at the Tasmanian

from the judges Luke, Polly, Hugo, Lola, Maia, Ruby, Sanjana, Tyler, Jessica, Finlay, James, Jobe, Ayla,

Sebastian, Ryan, Isabelle, Archer, Stella and Gus. Well done to all our students for their effort to

produce a creative portrait of someone they know; and thank you to the panel of judges for giving

up their time to judge the hundreds of entries. Parents are invited to come along and view the

portraits currently on display in classrooms and the Admin Foyer.

  • Book Week Dress Up and our first ever Book Swap were a great success today, with students excitedly going

back to class to read and chat about their books. Thanks to Mrs Wendy for her organisation of the Book Swap

and to the school community for supporting students to focus on the ‘super power’ that the reading of books

    brings to our lives.

Last Monday, as part of Science Week, 4 Tassie Scientists visited the Grade 1-2 classes to talk to the children about their work. Kelsey (Plant Geneticist), Tristan (Geologist), Laura (Epidemiologist) and Natalia (Oceanographer) helped us to challenge our ideas of what we thought a scientist was. We were also surprised to discover that, as we question and find out about the world, we are also being scientists.

    JUMP ROPE FOR HEART

A reminder that our whole school ‘Jump Off’ day is on Friday the 13th of September, with students dressing up in

the Halloween theme. Keep those donations coming in so that we can fill up our ‘Halloween thermometer”. We

know that all the students are keen to see Mr Fraser in a Tutu, have a Tug of War, see Mrs Nanna, Mrs O and Mr

Fraser have their hair styled in a multi-coloured style, and see the Jumping Jacks do the ice bucket challenge.

This is for a very good cause, and we can have lots of fun along the way!

    Thank you,

Mrs O, Mrs Nanna and Mr Fraser
