    PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Celebrations all around as our Samantha Prime is awarded, not one but two Sporting Blue Awards. At the Victorian School Sports Awards 2013 in the Members Dining Room at the MCG Samantha was presented with awards for Cross Country and Athletics. In 2013, Samantha had a State ranking of 1st in 1500m, 3000m and a National ranking of 2nd in 3000m. She was undefeated in track and field in 2013 over 800m, 1500m and 3000m, setting a state record in 3000m. She represented Australia in the IAAF World Junior Cross Country Championships in Poland in 2013. In the 6km race, Samantha battled snow and ice to finish a creditable 37th against the best in the world in a time of 20 minutes 18 seconds. She is currently ranked 3rd in Australia in 3000m and 4000m. Samantha also completed her Year 12 studies in 2013 here at Berwick College and is now studying at Geelong. Congratulations to an outstanding

young athlete and a delightful young lady.

In addition our Basketball Academy teams competed for the first time officially and had a very successful day. Competing against Albert Park, our teams won 18 and drew 1 game, while Albert Park Basketball Academy won 5 games. Well done to all of our teams on a day that was fun and successful.

Our Athletics Day was held on a sunny warm day and the competition was fiercely contested. After a hard fought victory congratulations go to Monash, well done to all competitors.

The Year 7 Camp down at Philip Island was held in great conditions for the high ropes, the beach, the pool, the big swing and the flying fox. Challenges and opportunities to shine brought students to the fore as they battled their fears to walk across the ropes, to let go of security and swing through the air, or to get up and perform at the concert. Some extraordinary talent was evident amongst our year 7 students, and I saw many happy faces as students had a fabulous time.

This year once again Berwick College was represented at Casey Relay for Life at Akoonah Park. With an amazing turn out and a wonderful combined effort from staff, students, ex-students and families, the College raised $7000 for the fight against Cancer. 40 staff members attended and over 150 people registered for our school. One of our senior students raised an additional $1000 for World’s Greatest Shave by shaving his head to raise money in memory of his dad. Special congratulations go to Mrs Caz Bates and Mr Scott Antony and our Year 12 VCAL students for organising this event.

Grade 6 teachers from our local feeder schools were invited to meet with our Year 7 teachers, and some very productive discussions were held regarding the transition of our young students into secondary education. We have also met with the Timbarra students who have had a very positive experience moving across to Berwick College in Year 10.

Practice has started for the Presentation Balls which will be held in May in conjunction with our partners the Rotary Club of Berwick. I was very impressed with the standard of the practice, and I am looking forward to both evenings after the holidays.

There are many exciting extra-curricular activities happening but our main focus, as always is on learning. Understanding where our students are academically and individually is a priority for us. Having just completed reports, and parent/teacher interviews we look now to gaining the best possible results for our students for the remainder of this semester’s assessment period. I hope you were able to attend on Thursday night or Friday and that some strategies were discussed to gain even more success. Attendance at school is critical. We cannot teach our students if they are not here at school.

Here at Berwick College we cater for students of all pathways, doctors, lawyers, teachers, builders, plumbers, hairdressers and so on. Together with our students, families, our partners such as Chisholm and Monash we can forge the pathway to success. To reach our goals we need to work towards them at least a little every day. No more zero days..no more days when we do nothing towards our goals.

Have a safe and relaxing holiday.

Rebecca Henderson – national champion!! Rebecca qualified for the Australian Junior Athletics Championships after winning the 3000m walk at the Athletics Victoria Track and Field Championships. The Championships were held at Sydney Park in March. Her years of training, hard work and persistence paid off when Bec crossed the line in time of 15 minutes 10 seconds in first position, seven seconds ahead of her nearest rival, to be presented with the gold medal. Bec trains for her athletics 2-3 times a week as well as fitting in swimming, dancing, tennis

BERWICK COLLEGE WINS ACADEMY CHALLENGE On Friday 28th March Berwick College participated in its first Academy Challenge against Albert Park Basketball Academy. Many of the players parents were there to witness a day of great success. Chris Pentland, Coach, said “I am sure the students all enjoyed getting out on the court and playing against students from another academy. All our students put their skills to the test and we ended up bringing home the inaugural Academy Challenge trophy. Berwick ended the day with 18 wins, 1 draw and 5 losses. Congratulations to all the kids.”

State 3 on 3 – Wrap Up Berwick College had 7 boys teams and 6 girls teams compete in the State 3 on 3 competitions over the last week in March. All teams represented Berwick College with distinction.

Through the tournaments 2 teams triumphed with podium finishes. The Intermediate Girls #1 team and Senior Boys #1 team both finished in 3rd position. These were great performances as the students came up against some very strong competition from both government and private schools from across the state.

Berwick College Junior Girls #2 team also did very well, but unfortunately went down in their Bronze medal match and finished in 4th position, another great achievement. Both of Junior #1 teams had tough quarter finals losses to the eventual State champions. The boys were narrowly defeated by just 1 point and the girls by 3. This one loss meant both teams could finish no higher than 5th. They both achieved this by winning the remainder of their state ranking matches.

Two sides that performed brilliantly on the day were the Intermediate Girls #3 team who were a late entry. These girls came up against girls up to 3 years older and were able to come away with a couple of victories. Finishing the day ranked 15th in Victoria. The Junior Boys #4 team also did brilliantly. They were all year 7’s and only lost 2 games for the day. The first was by 2 points to the eventual State Champs and the other was by 1 point to the team who finished in 3rd position.

It was a great day, ran very well by Basketball Victoria. I would also like to thank the following parents who

transported their own and other students to the venue. Big thanks to; Kristy Pentland, Ivana Treleani, Dean Tyrrell,

Kitty Kiker, Wayne Brook, Norm Hutchinson, Glen Farren, Matt Reedy-Bartlett and Joyce Taulapiu.

    APPLIED LEARNING NEWS

RELAY FOR LIFE On Friday 14th and Saturday 15th March, 110 year 12 students and 41 staff members completed the 24th Relay for Life challenge at Akoonah Park. The two Senior VCAL classes, of 78 students attended in shifts throughout the 24 hours and completed tasks during PD classes to ensure the events success and complete their outcomes in a practical and relevant manner.

I would like to congratulate two students Brad Amy and Katelyn Carpenter who lasted the entire 24 hours, so too did teachers Mr Scott Antony and Mr Mitchell Hammond. I would also like to thank Ms Carolyn Bates and Mr Scott Antony, the

two senior VCAL PD teachers, who ensured the students were prepared and whose enthusiasm and encouragement ensured so many staff and students attended. The class raised $7000 for Relay for Life, with student Luke Cousins shaving his head for World Greatest Shave, on the night, also raising $1000. This event has turned into a lovely tradition, that I hope to

see continue for many years to come.

    Student: Luke Cousins

Senior VCAL students have been continuing their work on the “I See you Project” with Teachers Ms Cheryl Madden and Mr Gary Black training students in Peer Support, in an all day work shop last Thursday. Students will now be working closely with year 7 students during Home groups throughout the year to build relationships amongst year levels.

Intermediate VCAL students have just finished an integrated Personal Development and Numeracy practical activity completing The Amazing Race in the City of Melbourne last Thursday. They have also been working on a unit of looking after themselves, including healthy eating and exercise, completing a boxercise session last week. In term 2 they will be applying their knowledge to teach grade 3 students from Berwick Primary School these skills. PreCAL students have finished a unit of work on Heroes and attended an excursion to the National Sports Museum on March 31st.

Year 9 ALP Students have been continuing their learning at Chisholm Dandenong completing Term 1 in Building and Construction or Hair and Beauty. Term 2 will be focusing on hospitality skills. They have also attended many excursions including Surfing and Snorkelling and will be attending the Shrine in Melbourne prior to Anzac Day. All students should now have a Structured Work Placement on either a Wednesday or Friday. ALP students will start their work placement in Semester 2 on Thursdays.

APPLIED LEARNING NEWS cont….. If your child has not secured a work placement they are required to attend school on these days and work in the senior school centre with Careers staff to work on finding a relevant placement. If your child is working but has not returned the Agreement, please ensure they do, as this is a legal requirement and puts yourself and school at risk should an accident occur in the work place. We have been visiting some students on their work placement and so far, most students are thoroughly enjoying the experience. Below is Caitlin Ferguson working at the Salvos Beaconsfield, and Ali Ulum working at Edrington Park as an event

Year 7 Art Melbourne Now Exhibition

On 7th March four year 7 groups, along with our senior Art, Studio Art and Visual Communication students, went on an excursion to the city to experience and see the Melbourne Now Exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. The exhibition was held across both galleries and students had the opportunity to visit both spaces. This exhibition allowed students to see contemporary art and challenge their view of what art should be. This was also an excellent opportunity for our year 7 art students to use their iPad as

part of their learning as it allowed them to take photos, video record installations and down load the e-book that was included as part of the exhibition. I encourage parents to ask their children who went on the excursion what they thought about it and to get them to show you some of the exciting work that was on display.

YEAR 11 SURF CAMP REFLECTION On Monday the 24th of Feb two of the Year 11 Outdoor Ed classes went to Sandy Point for Surf Camp. On the way up we stopped at the bakery in Korumburra for a little snack. We arrived at Sandy Point Surf Life Saving Club at 12.30pm. Once we had lunch we spent about three hours at the beach. We then came inside and had a BBQ for dinner. At 7.30pm we all went on a night walk which was lots of fun. When we got back from the night walk some of us played a game called Spoons, whilst some others watched a movie or went to bed. On the second day we got woken up at 6.30am by a smoke alarm because someone decided to get up early and make pancakes, accidently setting the smoke alarm off. I wonder how his pancakes turned out? We got up at 7am and went for a morning run and swim followed by breakfast. At 9am Mrs Stokes class went to the beach for surf rescue skills whilst Mr Hammond’s class did theory, learning about First Aid. We swapped over at 11am. After that we had lunch and went down the beach for a surf. That night we relaxed on the balcony, played cards or watched a movie. On day 3 we woke up at 7.30am had breakfast, cleaned and packed up all our stuff. We had our surf carnival at 9am. Mr Hammond’s class won one of the sprints and Mrs Stokes won one. It was one all until Mrs Stokes won the board paddle as well as the piggy back race. We finished the carnival with Mrs Stokes class overall winners!! We left camp at 12pm and stopped at Leongatha for lunch. We arrived back to class at 3.10pm. The highlights of the camp were learning to surf and the night time activities. The whole camp was great and so are the memories I will keep!! Chloe Smyk (Year 10)

    YEAR 9 INTERNATIONAL FOOD STALL

On Wednesday 19th March the two Year 9 International Food classes hosted an international food stall. The students had chosen a country to investigate and had decided upon a food from that country that they could sell to the wider school community. There was an array of different foods on offer for the rest of the school to sample. This included Scottish Shortbread, Indonesian Mi Goreng Noodles, French Poffertjes, American Pecan Pie, Greek Moon Biscuits, Mexican Taco’s, Sri Lankan Chicken Wings and German Pretzels among other selections. It was great to see the students successfully prepare, cook, set up and decorate for this stall and the large number of students and staff that turned out to taste foods from around the world and celebrate our Multicultural city. CAREERS

    CAREER ACTION PLANS

All students in Years 7 to 11 have now completed a Career Action Plan with their home group teacher that has been included in their mid-semester report. The Career Action Plan helps young people to develop their awareness and understanding of education, training and employment options, and to develop the skills, knowledge and capabilities to effectively manage their careers and transitions throughout their lives.

The development of a Career Action Plan is designed to assist young people to set their goals, to clarify the actions needed to achieve these goals, and to commit to participating in the planned activities. These plans also allow students to reflect on their results from Semester 2, 2013 and set personal learning goals for their learning this year. Home group teachers have worked closely with students to discuss their strengths, areas of interest and possible career pathways. These conversations contribute to the pastoral care program offered at Berwick College and assist with course selection later in the year.

We encourage you to discuss these with your child and also at parent teacher interviews. If you would like to discuss these with a Careers Practitioner please contact 8768 1073.

Ms Alison Birkett and Mr Adam Nettleingham Careers, VET and Business Partnerships Coordinators YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE

Year 10 students currently completed the unit Industry and Enterprise - Game of Life are at a range of work experience placements this week. Work Experience is in important part of Berwick College's educational program where students experience the world of work, often for the first time.

The placement of students with employers provides insights into the industry, and the workplace in which they are located. Placements range from primary schools and child care centres, to veterinary clinics, hospitals and in trade areas.

We thank all the local businesses and employers who have accepted a student for work experience this week and remind all other year 10 students that they can also complete work experience in the last week of Term 3.

    CERTIFICATE III IN OUTDOOR RECREATION

This past term the students have been studying risk management in the outdoors with a specific focus on white water rafting.

Students attended a 3 day raft guide training camp on the Goulbourn river near lake Eildon, where they trained on the artificial water course once used by the Australian canoe team. Standouts for the camp were the rescue swimming through the rapids; which had students navigating their way down the class 2 river swimming between the eddy’s and currents with their teams and the self-guided trips by the student teams down the 5km section of river.

The teams worked incredibly well together and progressed over the camp from the first day pin-balling down the river bouncing off the sides during the first few sessions to being able to plan and follow a designated course through the major rapids safely, conduct safety flip drills and rescue each other from the rapids during scenarios. Well done on a successful first term.

Kenny Day – Go Kenny! Another fun Kenny Day was had by all starting with our whole school home group activity where students participated in four different activities involving the word or colour RED. Also students had to make as many origami nurses hats as they could in the 30 minute home group. This of course linked with the fact that our namesake Elizabeth Kenny was a nurse. The aggregate score of each Student Learning Teams 7 home groups determined the winner. Kenny came in first, Chisholm second, Frost third and Dunlop fourth. As in previous years our Kenny Leadership team made red jelly cups to sell at lunchtime on Kenny Day. We also sold sausages and drinks. Live music could be heard in the canteen plaza featuring vocals, guitar and sound production by Mark Morante, Lauren Stevens, Hayden Foster, Grace and Thomas McCoy, Denver Hawkett, Nathan Darby, Daniel Wren, Jye Taylor and Josh Bateman. Louis Pendlebury had his hair shaved off for the “World’s Greatest Shave.” The place was a buzz! The Kenny Leadership students will decide at their next meeting what great cause our profits will go towards. In all the day went really well and I would like to thank and congratulate all our students for participating and supporting Kenny on our special day.

    TEAM FROST

CAPTAINS 2014 This year our two team captains are continuing on with their roles from last year. Liani Hedge and Tayla Abraham are both current Year 11 students and are balancing VCE with the role of Frost Learning Team Captains. Both stu-dents have taken part in the choosing of a new Frost Charity, the Leukaemia Foundation, as well as helping with the promotion of Frost week. We would like to congratulate and thank Liani and Tayla for their work and commitment to the Frost Learning Team.

Liani Hedge Tayla Abraham NEW TEAM FROST LOGO, MASCOT AND DESIGN COMPETITION This year in the spirit of fun and competition, the Frost students and teachers have come up with a new mascot.

Therefore we are now called the Frost Falcons.

We are running a design competition amongst all Frost students to come up with a design for two things: - A mascot - Frost Falcon, and - A logo.

This completion closes on 9th May 2014, and all entries must be submitted to Mr Antony, Mr Lees or the student’s home group teacher. FROST WEEK AND OUR 2014 CHARITY

Frost week this year is 23rd to 27th June with Frost Day being Thursday 26th June.

Frost has changed its charity to the Leukaemia Foundation Australia. This is a charity that focuses on research into the cause, treatment and care of people suffering from Leukaemia and other blood cancers. Unfortunately there is not a great understanding to the cause of these types of cancers and it also is a very common cancer for teenagers and children.

This year all the Frost home groups have a money box and the students are encouraged to put in any spare change and any extra cash throughout the year. Hopefully with all the students putting in a few dollars every couple of weeks, this will make a massive difference in helping to raise knowledge and awareness towards the Leukaemia foundation.

During Frost week, all Frost students are asked to sign up to ride a station-ary bike for 20- 30 minutes. All bikes will be fitted with an odometer, which will measure the distance the student rides. Throughout the week the total distance will be measured and recorded and we will track how far we can ride around Australia.

All home groups will be challenged to raise money through asking family and friends to sponsor them. Prizes will be given to Frost students and home groups for the furthest ride and most money raised.

More information and sponsorship forms will be sent home next term.

    NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2014 for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students will be held on Tuesday 13 May, Wednesday 14 May and Thursday 15 May 2014. NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in Writing, Reading, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers and principals which can be used to improve student achievement. All students are expected to participate in the NAPLAN tests. Exemptions may be granted to students with significant intellectual disabilities and to students who have been learning English for less than one year. If your child is eligible for support due to disability or an exemption, you should discuss this with Miss Lauren Kenny or Mr Spencer Davenport prior to the tests. Parental consent is required before any support due to disability or exemption is granted. Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents and carers in consultation with Mr Spencer Davenport. If, after consultation, you decide to withdraw your child, you must sign a Student Withdrawal form. These forms are available at the school. Later in the year you will receive your child’s personal NAPLAN report. The report will describe your child’s particular skills in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. The report will also show how your child performed in relation to national minimum standards. These describe the minimum acceptable standards for students across Australia. I am confident that the information you receive as a result of your child’s participation in the NAPLAN tests will be valuable in helping you to assess your child’s progress in literacy and numeracy. For more information about the tests, please visit the VCAA website at www.vcaa.vic.edu.au or the NAP website at www.nap.edu.au

Communicating with Parents via SMS We have added an SMS facility to eWorkSpace, which will primarily be used to notify parents of student absences, but communications may include reminders regarding meetings, sports days etc.

An SMS regarding attendance will be sent if your son or daughter is not in attendance at school and you have not notified our Attendance Officers: Chisholm, Frost, Hollows and Monash – 8768 1051 Dunlop, Flynn, Kenny and O’Donoghue – 8768 1086 Year 12 either 8768 1051 or 8768 1086

An SMS will be sent after morning administration and relevant data has been entered into the system at approximately 11am. Once you receive the message could you please contact our Attendance Officer on the above numbers. The success of this system clearly relies on accurate records of mobile phone numbers, so it is essential that you keep us informed of any changes.

UPPER BEACONSFIELD BUS Berwick Buslines has instituted a ticket system for the Upper Beaconsfield buses. Student can purchase a return ticket from the driver at the start of the day for $2.40. One-way tickets are also available for $1.20. As much as possible students are required to have the correct change. Passes for students who are eligible for the conveyance allowance should see Mr Couche for their pass.

    EVERYDAY COUNTS - SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day.

Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future – a student missing one day a fortnight will miss four full weeks by the end of the year. By Year 10 they’ll have missed more than a year of school.

There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind and if they don’t maintain regular attendance, it is unlikely they will be successful at school. In fact, the benefits go well beyond their years at school as research shows that regular attendance:

Develops skills and attitudes such as self-discipline, punctuality and being well organised. These skills help students to become “work ready.” Regular attendance at school is more likely to be translated into the workforce.

Leads to making friends and learning how to maintain relationships over a period of time. Leads to learning social skills necessary to live and work with others. Promotes learning, performance and enjoyment of school.

Coming to school every day is vital, but if for any reason your child must miss school, there are things we can do together to ensure they don’t fall behind:

Speak with your child’s home group teacher and find out what work your child needs to do to keep up.

For long term absences develop an absence learning plan with your child’s home group teacher and student learning leader and ensure your child completes the plan.

Remember, every day counts. If your child must miss school, inform the school early as early as possible. See below for information.

Chisholm, Frost, Hollows, Monash, Year 12 Absence line 8768 1051 (24 hours) to speak to Sharyn Collins or leave a message, and your child’s absence will be updated on our system or email [email protected]

Dunlop, Flynn, Kenny, O’Donoghue Absence line 8768 1086 (24 hours) to speak to Robyn Batch or leave a message, and your child’s absence will be updated on our system or email [email protected]

Please provide a note or email to your child’s home group teacher on return of your child to school (this is a legal requirement even if you have called the absence line)

From 1 March 2014, new laws will mean that parents can be fined for not sending students to school without an acceptable reason.

If you’re having attendance issues with your child, please let your classroom teacher know so we can work

together to get your child to school every day.
