The World Nurses Want is an online briefing (with two free CEUs!) that defines the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), their importance, their targets, how the UN is a transition into the SDGs, and most importantly, how and why a nursing voice is imperative for a better, healthier world. My colleagues also shared their experiences in trying to get the World Nurses Want agenda more accessible to their peers, colleagues, along with strategies to include their administrative staff in their hospital organizations. Presenting in Hong Kong was truly a unique and rewarding opportuni-ty for us, especially since we were some of the few to represent on-ly baccalaureate graduates! Through this, we have been able to meet nurs-es from all over the world who are just as interested and passionate about creating a more sustainable future with nurses at the forefront. The World Nurses Want team has had continued success in present-ing our project at the 65th Annual UN DPI (United Nations Department of Public Information) Conference this past August 2014. This conference was a forum for over 2,000 DPI NGO (Deparment of Public Information Non-Governmental Organization) mem-bers. Our session was targeted towards many different kinds of NGOs that are seeking ways to implement a strategy to engage their membership using technology and internet to their advantage. For more information on The World Nurses Want campaign, please visit: www.theworldnurseswant.net or join us on Thursday, October 9th for Iota Alpha’s General Membership meeting!

The World Nurses Want Campaign R. Sanchez This past July, David Schnabel, BSN, RN, Gloria Chan, BSN, RN-BC, CCRN-CFC, PCCN, Tim Shi, BSN, RN, OCN, our mentor, Dr. Holly Shaw, PhD, RN, and I had the opportunity to visit Hong Kong to present at the 25th Annual Research Congress. It's theme this year was "Engaging Colleagues: Improving Global Health Outcomes." Many of the attendees were from Hong Kong, main-land China, South Africa, Cambodia, Philip-pines, Australia, India, England, United States, Canada, and so on! Our team dis-cussed the grassroots development of The World Nurses Want(TWNW) initiative, which is a Post-2015 Agenda project created

by a small team of nurses that felt it was im-portant to reach out into their respective or-ganizations to gain interest and most im-portantly, nurs-ing input, for the United Nations’

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Spotlight on our President: UN Youth Representative

Iota Alpha in Hong Kong!

Raissa Lynn Sanchez, Presi-dent of the Iota Alpha chap-ter, is also the United Na-tions Youth Representative for Sigma Theta Internation-al. This is an appointed posi-tion by the STTI Executive Board.

Ms Sanchez met a board member during an interna-tional STTI mission. In con-versation, Ms Sanchez men-tioned her interest in global health issues. As a result, Ms Sanchez was recom-mended at the Executive Board meeting and voted in.

This position allows her to attend weekly briefings ei-

ther in person at the United Nation building in New York City or via broadcast. There is opportunity for youth representatives to offer com-ments and be heard. These are meetings that have the potential to frame global health policy.

STTI is designated as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). STTI has also gained recognition on the Economic and Security Council. This positions STTI as an expert organization, and as such, the members could be invited to submit position statements on a predetermined topic. (Continued on page 4)
