 Copyright.

• Further consultation on copyright safe harbour legislation – last week the Government announced it will undertake further consultation with stakeholders on the extension of the safe harbour provisions of the Copyright Act prior to introducing legislation. “Dr Heather Smith PSM, Secretary of the Department of Communications and the Arts, will oversee a series of meetings and roundtable discussions with stakeholders on the proposed changes. The Department has been asked to provide advice to Government by early June 2017 to enable the Government to continue to progress the copyright reform process”

• CAUL executive met this week – discussions included the coming announcements from Minister Birmingham, next CAUL conference, developing/changing the CAUL structure to implement the recommendations made at the September CAUL meeting

Oberwolfach Time to reconsider big deals. As serial prices continue to grow we are reviewing all purchases including the big deals (or indeed the medium and small deals). There are several we will review closely for cancellation and move to selected title subscriptions. Rick Andersen has investigated a small number of US university libraries and finds that some are walking away from the big deals of the likes of Wiley, T&F, Springer and SAGE. Deals changing - Elsevier & Taylor Francis. Fascinating times - Louisiana State University is suing Elsevier “for breach of contract resulting from the publisher’s exclusion of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine from accessing content licensed by the LSU Libraries”. Université de Montréal has just announced "deconstruction" of its Francis and Taylor Big Deal. Bibliometrics. On 12 May at ANU Menzies Library, Dr Anthony Dona, Solutions Consultant at Clarivate Analytics, is delivering a free one-day workshop on research impact. There are four sessions that explore different research impact tools, including Web of Science, InCites, Journal Citation Reports, Researcher ID and ORCID. New DMPs Interest GroupA new Data Management Plans (DMPs) Interest Group has recently been created, facilitated by ANDS. The next online discussion meeting is on Thu 1 Jun at 12pm AEST Register

The group will offer a forum for discussion about evaluating DMPs, DMP tools and effectiveness. It is open to anybody interested in DMPs.

Open research New in the repository: What’s new in scholcomm Code4Lib. The new issue is out now – some great articles:• An interactive map for showcasing

repository impacts by Hui Zhang and Camden Lopez. The readership map exhibits the global impacts of a repository by displaying the city of every view or download together with the title of the scholarship being read and a hyperlink to its page in the repository.

• Outside The Box: Building a Digital Asset Management Ecosystem for Preservation and Access by Andrew Weidner et al…The University of Houston (UH) Libraries made an institutional commitment in late 2015 to migrate the data for its digitized cultural heritage collections to open source systems for preservation and access: Hydra-in-a-Box, Archivematica, and ArchivesSpace. This article describes the work that the UH Libraries implementation team has completed to date

• Autoload: a pipeline for expanding the holdings of an Institutional Repository enabled by ResourceSync by James Powell, Martin Klein and Herbert Van de Sompel… the Autoload pipeline prototype and how it aggregates and utilizes Web services including Crossref, SHERPA/RoMEO, and oaDOI as it attempts to retrieve archivable copies of resources.
