As this is the last newsletter before Easter, I would like to finish with an Easter Reflection. To me, Easter is a wonderful expression of HOPE.

HOPE is that spark deep within, that small inner voice, that tingling feeling, that resolve to not give in, that choice to not give up, to try again, to believe, to love, to forgive ….. Anything that is positive and beautiful in the face of the worst that life can throw at you. HOPE is the hallmark of all people of faith and love, regardless of religion, ethnicity or social standing.

But HOPE is not blind; it is not the blind adherence that the cult demands, nor the unthinking following that turns so many into pawns in cruel wars where religion and race are only masks for greed and ignorance. No, HOPE is power in the smallest of feet, the weakest of hands and the seemingly most unimportant of voices as it stands and challenges hate and division and cruelty and greed. HOPE; that small voice inside you and me when in the face of so much hurt and evil and pain, we believe that love will conquer. HOPE; knowing that life is stronger than death, light more powerful than darkness, love the victor over hate! HOPE has its cousins; faith (belief), love and joy where they are found, God in all the names humans give to Him (Her), is found.

The Jesus story encompassed every reason for anger, cruelty and naked power. This mere carpenter from Nazareth preached of the dignity of all, ate at the home of the sinner, washed the feet of the 12, cleared the Temple and spoke of the hollowness of institutional Religion when it serves money, power and greed. So they took Him and they crucified Him and on the third day, He did rise. HOPE; our belief, our knowing that he is Risen indeed and lives, truly lives, within each of us; urging us to forgive, leading us to life, breaking open our hardened hearts. Yes, Easter is the greatest feast; the greatest celebration in our spiritual lives—for Easter is the feast of HOPE.

When all seemed lost, when the evil that was Calvary seemed supreme, when once again power and corruption seemed invincible; on Easter morning, He rose from the dead, He conquered death, He gave us all the reason never to lose HOPE, never to give in. I live for the day that our boys when asked what Easter is will see beyond the Easter eggs, the holidays, the last warm sun before the Winter and say ‘Easter is why, despite everything, we can smile. Easter is the reason for it all!”

Yours sincerely

Deputy Principal - IdentityDear Parents/Guardians

I would like to wish all families a safe and happy break and look forward to welcoming you back on Tuesday, 22 April. I would like to finish the term with a prayer:

Living with a Teenager

Lord, I live with teenagers. Now, life is all about adapting to their needs. And me? I have had to change too, Lord. I can interpret teenage grunts that mean ‘yes’, ‘no’ or ‘I’m hungry’. During these years, Lord, I am amazed by how much I am still learning!

I have learnt about teenage human endurance: that it takes super-human strength to stay holed-up in a room for hours on end with social media.

I have learnt to choose my words carefully and wisely.

I have learnt that some days, there is never enough food in the pantry to satisfy their hunger. And the kind of food they crave is not always ‘healthy’.

Some days are easier than others. Some days are harder than others. Some days my patience is tested to the max.

But Lord, teenagers are disarmingly charming when it comes to asking for money, or clothes, or to be taken to so-and-so’s house for a party. Those charming moments encourage me to live in hope.

Often they ‘drip-feed’ me information; telling me only what I need to know.

Occasionally they are predictably unpredictable; especially when their plans change at the last minute and without warning.

And yes! They know everything!

Yet You, Lord, in your infinite wisdom, know the beauty and joy of this stage! I ask for only one thing: that they are protected from harm so as to enjoy the years ahead of adulthood.

For only when they enter my world as an adult, will they then understand how much they are loved.

Amen

Please keep in your prayers staff member Anne Sciuto and her family on the recent passing of Anne’s mother. May she rest in peace.

God’s blessingJon Hansen

Deputy Principal Reports will be distributed on Thursday, 24 April BY EMAIL. For Term 1 the report is a summarised “tick and flick” type report. Instructions to schedule and organise parent/teacher interviews will be distributed on the same day. We are looking forward to seeing you at the upcoming parent night on Wednesday night, 7 May 2014.

ATTENTION PARENTS OF YEAR 9 STUDENTS - National Literacy and Numeracy Testing (NAPLAN)Year 9 Parents and Guardians should be aware that national testing in Literacy and Numeracy will be carried out this year from 13 – 15 May.

There are five different test papers worked on over the three days period. The purpose of the testing is to give individual students a report on how they are progressing in the two key areas of learning – literacy and numeracy. An individual report will be distributed later in the year.

The College is adapting our programs in English and Maths to best prepare the boys for the exams. This is Federal Government testing and we are asked that school and family arrangements be cleared for this three day period if at all possible. The tests will be conducted in the hall on the morning of those three days. Two sessions of “Hall” practice for the Year 9’s has been allocated at the start of Term 2. If anyone has any other queries about this test, please don’t hesitate to contact me at the College.

QCS SUPERVISORS WANTED!!The QCS test for the Year 12’s is coming up again in September and I am searching for supervisors from the general community. These people assist in the conduct of the exams and general supervision of students during the two days of the QCS test. This QCS supervision may or may not be carried out at Ignatius Park. Your role is to ensure the accountability of the QCS test. This is a paid position, and 2-3 positions are available. The test is being conducted on 2 and 3 September this year.

If you are interested, please contact Brendan Stewart at the College this week at [email protected] and I will respond with the forms required to apply. If you are a parent of a current Year 12 student you are still able to apply. Thankyou for your interest!

Dean - Middle SchoolThis term has certainly flown! Although it has only been a term, it already feels like I am part of the furniture.

As I work closely with the Year 8 and 9 boys, I have been impressed daily by their passion, commitment and dedication to the College. Their challenge is to now consistently apply this across the year, something I am certain they can do.

YEAR 9 - NAPLAN 2014An email with information pertaining to the 2014 NAPLAN tests was sent to all Year 9 Parents/Guardians earlier in the week. If you did not receive this email, please contact the College so this information can be disseminated.

YEAR 8 – PARENT SURVEY All Year 8 parents were asked to complete an online survey. Thank you to those parents who have already done so. Just a reminder - the survey closes this Friday afternoon.

We hope you all have a happy Easter and the boys return refreshed for another term.

Craig Brown

Year 10 Interview Day

The Year 10 English students were very fortunate to have the opportunity to hone their interview skills during their mock interview day on Thursday, March 27. Over 20 parents and other members of the community volunteered their time to provide as real an interview experience as possible. Boys interviewed for positions as diverse as retail, diesel fitting and telecommunications.

The boys had worked hard preparing resumes, application letters and selection criteria, which saw the interviewers comment they were very well organised. Their teachers worked very hard during the term to prepare them for this, and for their future entry into the workplace.

We would like to thank our volunteers who certainly made the experience an authentic and enriching one. Particular thanks to Mr Lindeberg who worked tirelessly over many works to organise the experience and support the boys in their endeavours.

CAREERS CORNER

CAREER of the WEEK: Automotive industry and Resource industry

Recent media reports give the impression that the future of jobs in the automotive industry is very grim. While this might be the case for some automotive manufacturing jobs, it is not the whole picture. The automotive industry will continue to offer a broad and diverse range of jobs. Find out more about opportunities in the automotive industry on the Mentor/Adviser Apprenticeship Program (MAAP) My Future website at http://maapmyfuture.com.au/ .

The resource industry The ‘People for the Future’ website at http://peopleforthefuture.com.au/ is a useful starting point for learning about the various entry points and pathways in the resource industry. The site has information on jobs, training qualifications and case studies. There is also an interactive Career Finder tool to help you get started.

Cross CountryThe 2014 Cross Country Running of the Boys!

The Cross Country came and went with record speeds this year. The Year 8 winners finished their 3km run in just a few seconds over 12 minutes while the Year 12’s were not far behind on their 6km run in 26 minutes 33 seconds. However, it was Charlton Offermans in 11 Rice who was the speed demon of the day who ran the course in 25 minutes 58 seconds. It was a hot day but all of the boys worked hard, ran fast and did their houses proud.

Baillie took out both, the Junior Trophy and the Cross Country Trophy with Treacy coming in second and Rice and Nolan tieing for third. Congratulations to all of those involved. The following students were individual medal winners in their age group.

National Championship

Rowing RegattaPatrick Boniface and Thomas Smith have recently returned from the National Championships held at Olympic Park in Sydney last week.

The pair made it through to their heats to progress through to the Semi’s in the Under 17’s OPEN Schoolboys doubles. Unfortunately, the boys narrowly missed out on progressing to the finals. The boys have been training since September 2013 in preparation for the competition.

The Ignatius Park College Rowing team would also like to make special mention to Mr Robert Hamilton (IPC Head Rowing Coach) for his tireless contributions towards training the boys in preparation for the competition. We are very fortunate to have a coach with his level of experience to coach the boys at such an elite level.

Congratulations again to Tom, Patrick and Rob for such a fantastic effort at Nationals.

Edmund Rice Day Celebrations

Today we held the Edmund Rice Day Celebrations and in true Edmund Rice spirit it encouraged a sense of belonging and community within the College.

We thank the parents and family members that were able to attend and we hope you enjoyed the day as much as we enjoyed having you.

Your sons will probably tell you all about the activities but some of the frivolities included Sumo Suit Wrestling, Sock Wrestling, a Dunking Machine (for some reason students love dunking their teachers!), Mechanical Bull Rides, Pillow Fights, Gladiator Wars, an Inter-House Tug of War and the Eddie Rice Dash. The winner of the Dash was Callum Purdon.

As usual the Year 12s vs Staff sporting competitions were hotly contested events.Well done to the brave staff for putting their hands up to take part in the Rugby League, Football and Netball contests. I’m sure a few are happy it is a student free day tomorrow, so they have time for their bodies to recover.

We send our best wishes for a happy and safe Easter.

St Vincent de Paul is raising much needed money.

Drought Appeal

Help out a farmer!

BUY A BALE

$35 per bale

If your business or family would like to buy a bale, or contribute money towards a bale (or any other help), please either, contact Ms Jacky Armstrong at [email protected], or call Piera Holland and make a donation to St Vinnies Drought Appeal. Your bale of hay will be placed on our “Vinnie' Truck” out front of the office with all of the homeroom bales raised.

Thank you to everyone who has been supporting the “Buy a Bale” fundraiser. We have well over 70 bales and are nearly half way to our goal of 200 bales. The fundraiser will continue up until week 3 on Term 2 so it is not too late to help out.

Remember, it is more than feeding 10 cows per bale but instead boosting the morale of the farmers and the entire community. Please continue to support the fundraiser and buy a bale or send in a few dollars with your son and he can give his contribution to his Homeroom teacher who will continue to collect money. Thank you for your contribution.

Conceived and originally directed by John Michael Tebelak, with music and new lyrics by ‘Wicked’ composer Stephen Schwartz, GODSPELL is one of the biggest off-Broadway and Broadway successes of all time.
