Nutana Community Association President’s MessageBy Mike McKague [email protected]

Hello Nutana! It’s been another fast and fan-tastic summer in Nutana. I hope you and your family have been able to enjoy the last few months, taking advantage of all that is offered by summer and living in our neighbourhood. Did you run down Victoria Av-enue while you participated in the Saskatchewan Marathon in May, or enjoy being part of Jane’s Walk in June? Mosofest and the Fringe Festival and the Broadway Artfest brought hundreds of musical, theatrical, and artistic perfor-mances to the Broadway corridor throughout the summer. Brain-sport’s and the Running Room’s running clubs or OneYoga’s yoga in Rotary Park brought free op-portunities to shape up. Nutana certainly enjoys a greater depth and breadth of activities than any other area of Saskatoon. The Nutana Community As-sociation has been remarkably busy since our last newsletter. The Broadway Theatre hosted the NCA’s most successful AGM ever. Over 80 people showed up, interested in the talk pre-sented by City Archivist Jeff O’Brien about Nutana’s history; they were also interested in the 10 Big Ideas the NCA has for bet-tering your neighbourhood. Harvest time is nearly upon us at the community garden beside the Roastery. A new leadership

team has done an outstanding job with the garden. Redevelopment of Chief Darcy Bear Park, east of Nutana Colle-giate, happened over the summer. At some point in the near future our community garden will move to the north end of that green space. Clearly our neighbourhood is gentrifying, as over 200 kids signed up for NCA spring soccer (a record!). The <nutana.ca> web site is currently being renovated and we have over 200 friends on our Facebook page.Clearly, many people care deeply about Nutana and the city as a whole. Although the NCA does not necessarily endorse the opin-ions of these groups, it is excit-ing to see some passion for our neighbourhood. A parent from Victoria School is petitioning the City to not allow striptease acts near schools (and, therefore, on Broadway Avenue). See http://www.change.org/en-CA/peti-tions/saskatoon-city-council-en-sure-that-zones-around-schools-daycare-etc-are-strip-club-free The Saskatoon CarShare Co-operative (www.facebook.com/saskatoon.carshare) is launching in Saskatoon, with Nutana as its first target area. SCRUB is asking government for a pedestrian and cycling only option for the Traffic Bridge redesign; visit http://saskatoon-urbanbridge.org/

And a group of residents pri-marily from Albert Avenue have committed themselves to spear-heading fundraising for a Clar-ence Avenue Park revamp. Your comments on any of these issues are welcome. E-mail me at [email protected] In the immediate future, the Community Association is host-ing our indoor programming registration night, September 9 at 6:30 p.m. at Victoria School. We are also pioneering online registration this fall. Please visit nutana.ca for details. Later in the fall, the NCA hosts the 4th Annual Pumpkins in the Park, Nov. 1 in Rotary Park. Please come for a hot dog and some fresh air. Last year, winter ar-rived about 20 minutes after we cleaned up.I invite you to engage yourself in your community. The NCA runs on volunteer power and we have an amazing executive. We always welcome new energy. Please contact me if you have any time that you could contrib-ute, or ideas you would like to move forward. Visit nutana.ca regularly and like us on Face-book.com/nutanacommunity. You may also always contact me at [email protected] -

Nutana Community Garden 2013Our Nutana Community Garden has been having another banner year. Despite a very late start, several new volunteers stepped forward with some great new ideas to take our garden to a new level of organization. Special thanks to garden leaders Myrtle Harrington and Suzanne Win-nitowy for doing an outstanding job of keeping the garden run-ning smoothly. The community garden started in 2006, and has been built on the huge efforts of many volunteers over the years, and so we would like to also extend a special thank you to all past volunteers for their efforts in developing this hidden gem in our community. Community gardening is as much about

socializing as it is about plant-ing, so please feel free to stop by and walk through the garden to enjoy the variety and diver-sity of plants, and talk with the gardeners. Community gardening has be-come very popular in our neigh-bourhood, with waiting lists almost every year. Construc-tion of a second garden location and permanent new home for the community garden is well under way beside the Nutana Collegiate. The school ground at Nutana Collegiate has been converted into Chief Darcy Bear public park, with sports fields and a children’s playground under construction as well. The

concept for this conversion began almost eight years ago, when it was recognized that Nutana had a shortage of pro-grammable park space, so it is very rewarding to see this park inching toward completion. Our current garden location directly behind the Broadway Roastery on 12th Street East near Broad-way Avenue is located on private land generously provided for our use by Ellen Remai. Our new garden location beside Nu-tana Collegiate is only a fraction of the size of our current garden, so we hope to run both gardens for as long as we possibly can.

For a century, the Nutana neigh-bourhood has enjoyed some manner of association with the celebrated Gustin name. Arriving from Quebec’s Eastern Townships in 1912, the 17-year old Lyell Gus-tin and his parents, Ammi and Helen Gustin, lived briefly in the Riversdale area. The Henderson Directory of 1913 gives the Gustin family address as 324 Avenue K South. In direc-tories issued from 1914 onward, the Ammi Gustin household is listed as resident at several lo-cations in Nutana: 1022 Broad-way South (1914 and 1915); 518 Tenth Street (1916 and 1917); 621 Twelfth Street (1918, 1919, and 1920); and thereafter at 512 Tenth Street, in the new house they had built in 1920. From 1915 to 1919, Ammi Gustin, a carpenter, was employed by the Saskatoon Children’s Carriage Company at 732 Broadway (currently the Bulk Cheese Warehouse).

The Gustin family residence at 512 Tenth Street had been de-signed to serve as a studio for the musically gifted Lyell, as he re-turned in 1920 from four years of intensive piano study in Chicago. So rapidly did the Lyell Gustin Piano Studios grow, that an ad-dition was built in 1928 to extend the studio area. The modest but well-appointed house became a vibrant centre of musical and ar-tistic life, drawing students from across the province and Prairie region, and achieving a national and international reputation as Gustin graduates went on to ca-reers far and wide. Throughout the years, Dr. Gustin was a well-known figure in the neighbourhood, cycling the streets and lanes, and taking walks, even into his advanced age. He had become a musical legend, rec-ognized widely for some seven decades of outstanding teach-ing and cultural leadership. He remained deeply attached to this city and this area, having turned down employment offers from prestigious institutions elsewhere: “I am living exactly where I want to live,” he said in an interview late in his life; “I am a contented man!” Some months after Lyell Gustin’s death on February 7, 1988, his property was purchased by his for-mer student and devoted friend, Lloyd Rodwell. Mr. Rodwell gave his teacher’s home the name “Gus-tin House” and created the circum-stances for Dr. Gustin’s rich legacy to continue, through an organiza-tion he established, the Gustin/Trounce Heritage Committee Inc. Gustin House, along with the historic Trounce House at the back of the same lot (erected 1883, and

Saskatoon’s oldest structure), was designated a Municipal Heritage Property in 1989 and a Provincial Heritage Property in 2008; it is one of just three Provincial Heritage sites in Saskatoon, and the only one in a residential neighbour-hood. The links between Nutana and the Gustins thus encompass a family migrating to early Sas-katoon, the brilliant musical life at the Gustin Studios during many decades, and the musical/cultural/heritage activities now taking place in the spirit and tradi-tion of Lyell Gustin. Nutana may well be proud of the distinction the Gustin presence has so long brought to the neighbourhood! Thanks are due to Dianne Wil-son and Elaine Kozakavich for research assistance in the annals of early Saskatoon. More infor-mation on Gustin House and Trounce House is available at www.gustinhouse.ca

Car Sharing for Nutana This Fall

-

[rec’d 22Aug2013 fr. Joan Halmo]

Over the past two years, a group of local residents have been working together to develop the Saska-toon CarShare Co-operative (SCC). Our goals are to decrease personal vehicle use and dependence on fossil fuels, provide affordable access to vehicles, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, encourage resi-dents to make use of more sustainable transporta-tion, and support community transit.Saskatoon CarShare Co-operative offers the free-dom of vehicle access without the expense and hassle of car ownership. We will be launching our carsharing service in the Nutana neighbourhood this fall, starting with two or three cars. The procedure to use these cars is very simple:1. Book a vehicle online.2. Find the car in its designated parking spot and wave your unique access key in front of a sensor to unlock the car.3. At the end of your booking, return the car to the same designated parking spot and wave your access key to lock the car. This will also end your

booking and the system will automatically log the time and distance of your drive.Proposed rates are as follows (note that these rates are subject to change and will not be official until the service begins operations): Initial costs: membership fee of $500 (refund-able), application fee of $30, keyfob deposit of $10 (refundable). Usage fees: $4 per hour, plus a fuel charge. We are now taking memberships. You can join online or by mail (membership forms can be down-loaded from the web site). Please visit our web site for more information: www.saskatooncarshare.caTwitter: @YXECarShareCoop Facebook: www.facebook.com/saskatoon.carshare
