Vietnamese Market Day StallOur students held their Vietnamese Market Day stall yesterday. Having recently travelled to Vietnam, they bought some beautiful items home and sold their wares and Rice Paper Rolls at lunch time. All profits go to the Tin Truyen Orphanage in Ho Chi Minh City. Hillbrook has been supporting this struggling orphanage for over six years and they have seen some significant improvements due to generous funding from groups like ours. We have raised over $2000 for them this year!

Collect Your Beautiful PhotosHundreds of uncollected photographic images from previous competitions are haunting the Art rooms as they wait for collection. Any unclaimed photos will be donated to a worthy cause. Collect them from G1 during your breaks before the end of this term.

PLACES IN AUSTRALIA (how would you share the essence of Australia?) 7. PLACES OVERSEAS (celebrate the distinct features of our global landscape, society, cultures and people) 8. WHO WINS? • JUDGES choose Winners, Runners Up, Highly Commended and Commended images within each category. Students in Year 8

are just as likely to win as those in older grades. The judging panel is made up of teachers, students, professionals and past associates of the school.

• Children and adults are judged separately. • Prizes for Winners and Runners Up range from Myer Gift Cards, to Outdoor Ed items, Art supplies, digital cameras, computer

games and photo frames. • Didn’t get chosen by our illustrious judges? Don’t worry! There’s a People’s Choice Award, where anyone in our Hillbrook

community may choose which overall image they think is best. You can even vote for yourself in the People’s Choice Award when you attend the Prize Giving event on the 3rd August.

• The 2015 Hillbrook Calendar is created from the images chosen in the People’s Choice Award. • Cost of printing: Our ever-supportive sponsor, The Gap Photography, is again offering fantastic price reductions when you

print your amazing images with them.

SAFE DRIVE TRAINING Pty LtdPhone: (07) 3299 7723

Email: [email protected]: www.sdt.com.au

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE- A fleet of specially modified vehicles is provided to allow participants to test drive a range of vehicles to understand their characteristics. You will learn SAFE DRIVE skills while you TEST DRIVE a mixture of cars. Other training companies require you to use your own vehicle, which might suffer increased tyre wear and might not be insured.- Unlike other driver training programs this course is based on best-practice methodology to reduce over-confidence and risk taking in participants by showing students the limits of their ability and the limits of a vehicle. - Fatal Vision Goggles are used for participants to experience in safety the impairment of alcohol and drugs on driving performance.- Where possible, unique SKID TYRES and/or DRIVING SIMULATORS are used to demonstrate the consequences of risk taking and reckless driving. - Qualified instructors with Blue Card and First Aid

Find us on:

WHO CAN ATTENDThe course content is tailored for under 25’s. Partici-pants must have either a current LEARNERS PERMIT or PROVISIONAL LICENCE. This is not a “learn to drive” course, so you should have at least 5 hours of experience and be able to drive, brake, change gears (if driving a manual) and steer a car. If unsure about your driving ability you should postpone attending until more experienced.

LOGBOOK HOURSDespite this being a safe driving course, Queensland Transport does not recognise attendance at any Defensive driving courses, safety lectures or simulator training as being eligible for log-book hours.

In many countries Defensive Driving courses are part of the driver licencing process.

Media Release Communify QLD Fundraising Dance, 14th June 2014

Communify QLD is a Bardon-based community organisation. Our aim is to develop and deliver local services and activities in response to the issues and opportunities that life can present. We are currently supporting a number of local refugee families who are struggling financially and socially. They are in need of some basic essentials like Go Cards and phone cards, to help lessen social isolation and assist with daily tasks, as well as assistance with family reunion visas and other advocacy issues. Here is the story of one of these families:

Family story A single mother with 4 children fled from persecution in Afghanistan and applied for asylum in Australia in 2001. After waiting in dangerous and uncertain circumstances for 12 years, she was granted a permanent protection visa in 2013. Before leaving for Australia her eldest son went missing and she had to travel without him. He has since been located but continues to be in serious danger. As he is now over 21, he is no longer able to enter Australia on the original family visa application. The family has received advice that the cost of applying for a new visa will be over $3,000. Also suffering from a number of chronic illnesses, she struggles to support her family on the Newstart allowance and has no capacity to cover these fees.

Come and Dance up a Storm….

Join us in a night of fun and dance as local Brisbane band Scotch on the Rocks leads a traditional Scottish Ceilidh (square dance) suitable for all ages and dance levels! Come and have some fun and learn some new dance moves all for a great cause! Tickets are $15 each and all funds raised will go directly to assist local refugee families. Light refreshments are included. Alcoholic beverages will be available for sale. When: Saturday 14th June, 2014, starting at 7pm. Where: Newmarket Bowls Club, 212 Ashgrove Ave, Ashgrove. For more information contact Merlijn Nihcolson 0402 280 954. Go to www.communify.org.au and download a registration form to purchase tickets.
