Summer Potluck & Speaker: Pat Rollie “The Magic of Mistakes”

OH NO! The quilt you started developed a HUGE mistake…all by itself!

Now what do you do?

1. Give up, throw it away and start over…oooh does that really hurt!

(Especially at $10.00+ a yard!)

2. Finish it reluctantly, with the mistake(s) glaring at you the whole time, and donate it

quick, (before you have to look at it again), to your favorite charity or to a ‘not favorite

relative’…you know the one who will probably let their dog sleep on it.

3. Painstakingly, pick out every ‘bad’ seam to make it perfect….some of us, are really GOOD

at this.

4. Accept it with its ‘flaw’s’ and hope nobody notices them.

5. Somehow, through ingenuity, ‘magic’ and sheer ‘impossibility’ turn this glaring mistake

into an incredible award winning quilt. (Many in our guild find this not only achievable, but

pleasant.)

Our speaker, Pat Rollie, who is able to achieve #5 consistently and who has volunteered

unstintingly to the benefit of all us, is going to share her secrets with us.

Those of you who only know Pat from her ‘block of the month’, her reputation as an award

winning quilter and her genuinely sweet, (not overly), personality will now get to appreciate her

ability to encourage us to not give up on our ‘poor little quilt(s)’.

Pat has AMAZING qualifications. She has been quilting for over 30 years and has completed the Fine Art and Surface/ Textile Design Certificate programs at Otis School of Art & Design in Los

Angeles. She received her first national recognition from McCall's Magazine Quilting competition in 1990. Two of her pieces have appeared in the American Quilters Society Art Quilt Engagement

Calendar; one in 2006 and another in 2010. The International Quilt Festival has showcased Pat's work in traveling exhibitions for the past three years. In addition to all of her art quilting,

Pat is a professional longarm quilter.

Pat looks for subject matter that creates an opportunity to use thread and quilting designs to create texture, depth and contour. She is a noted watercolor artist as well. Pat brings her love of

quilting, attention to detail and her enthusiasm to share and inspire us.

fed my little nieces a breakfast of Chocolate milk,

Captain Crunch Cereal, Pop-Tarts, oatmeal

cookies, and Hershey Kisses. Their mother kept

commenting about how she had never seen them

so excited about going to Disneyland.

I’ve thought about putting out bowls of fresh

fruit and nice healthy muffins or making one of

those nice breakfast casseroles that can be

prepared the night before, but here is my other

problem: My husband eats. Not only does he

eat, he likes to share whatever he is eating with

the dog. Whole meat loaves have mysteriously

disappeared and no one seems to know where

they went. Last night, I finally came up with a

solution. I am going to put fast food gift

certificates on everyone’s pillow. Give them a

choice between Captain Crunch or an Egg

McMuffin and pray Michelle Obama doesn’t find

out. Stitch, Quilt, Love, Barb

I want to send a special “thank you” to Alice

Turner and her elves who worked so hard on our ice

cream social. Everything was so good and I know

everyone had a grand time. I hope everyone had a

chance to look at the cute tablecloths and napkins

that featured the saying, “I scream, You Scream. We

all scream for ice cream.”

Summer Guests I’m getting ready for the annual summer invasion

of family that seems to find my home the perfect

Bed and Breakfast while visiting Southern California.

Every year I warn the family that my husband’s

leprosy is raging, the dog has an awful case of

mange and we are trying to get rid of an infestation

of bed bugs…but nothing seems to deter them.

The worst part of running a Bed and Breakfast is

the “breakfast” part. I am not a morning person.

First thing in the morning, I could easily be

compared to a zombie. My husband has actually

painted arrows for me to follow down the center of

the carpet leading from the bedroom to the kitchen.

Any morning I get to the kitchen without running

into anything is a “good morning.” Until I’ve

consumed about a gallon of strong black coffee, I

don’t do anything but stare vacantly at walls.

My husband accepts the fact that if he wants

pancakes or eggs, he is just going to have to wait

until my heart starts pumping and brain function

kicks in. Visiting family is a different matter. They

actually expect to eat first thing in the morning. So

you can see the problem. After brain activity

started one morning last year, I realized I had just

LIBRARY NOTES Newly purchased books will be available at the August meeting. In addition to the above

titles, with the book fine money, I was able to purchase Orphan Blocks. In keeping with 2012 Show theme, this book has innovative settings using antique or older blocks that you may have collected. Also, I am exploring purchasing a book on using men’s neckties

to make a quilt. The best book on neckties that I found is out of print and very expensive if purchased through Amazon. No library in July due to the potluck dinner. However, if you want a specific book, I well

bring it. [email protected] Thank you for your encouragement and support, Susan Edwards

“Quilts of the Wild West”, A Finale Thanks to Ya All! “What an event! Loved the quilts, loved the quilters, loved all the quilt team, loved it all! … Did I mention, I LOVED IT? Thanks again.” Truly, the guild produced a spectacular show only possible because of all you wonderful and helpful

gals and guys! Volunteerism unbelievable! I can‟t thank the show team enough for their time spent making the show run so smoothly, your heart and soul was truly the “Spirit of the West”. Again, you definitely captured the heart, soul, and love of quilting with our 3000 guests! Even with a monsoon paying us a visit on Sunday, we had a great turnout! Yes, it was a star studded event with so many of our gals awarded 1st place ribbons, Carolyn Hodapp, Tina Curran, Lisa Burroughs, Annetta Guerrero, Doralee Dohnel, Margie Emmons, Sherryl Zurek,

Heidi St. Royal (Thank you again, this was my President‟s quilt from all of you!). Congrats also to all winners of ribbons, what a talented group!! Our Viewers Choice was awarded to Sandi Crabtree;

“Butterflies are Free” to a non-member from Utah; Special Event winners: Western Wear- Leah Bessey; Small Quilt- Annetta Guerrero; and Doll- Lucinda Blancarte. The opportunity quilt winner, Vickie Asher, of South Bay Quilt Guild, was presented the “Log Cabin Rodeo” quilt on stage at the last General Meeting by our gals who emotionally parted with this wonderful quilt! I just have to again recognize an extraordinary group on how the “West was Won” at this quilt

show! Just imagine stepping into meetings with Deputy Sharon Bishop at your side, keeping an eye on the scene. At the show, you found a warm and welcoming gathering of teachers, workshops by Judy Sellers and Harriet Sartinsky. Set up of quilts, acquired by Quilt Judges, Nan Maples and Barbara Stuart, was by Sharon Bishop and Kelly Nassiri. You saw and tried the latest notions thanks to Joni Kellam and Colleen Shier. To enjoy the luxury lifestyle of quilts, Corinne Gurney provided a silent auction. Another window of opportunity in the West, where likeminded people came together and were invited in, was Frances Brannon and Barb Gibson‟s Country Store. “Wanted: Dead or Alive”, Sabina Steinmetz photo shot all! No one was

lost with Martha Lewis‟s signage. You observed stunning western logos and prints, garnered by Rasa and Nick Read. You can bet your boots we felt secure with Caren Cook Ryan on guard and protecting our Wells Fargo gal, Treasurer Margie Emmons. Our hired hands were choreographed and wearing sashes by none other than Lettie Williams and Crystal Dudley. Loretta Bradley and Doralee Dohnel kindly welcomed visitors

and received the gold! Brandi Nalley‟s ads brought all to our affair. It was no mystery that Nan Maples had all quilters spellbound with her Mystery Quilt class on Friday. The Sat. Night Sampler was truly “sweet” and

fun by Judy and Harriet, with the celebrity teachers. On the range you found a Western Wear contest by Alice Smith and Jean Giacomelli; Small quilt darlings by Cathy McNassar; Doll exhibit by Sandy Rogers. To award the participants, Margaret McNeal and June McNamara created a „Covered Wagon‟ to accept viewers choice box ballots. Info was pronto and there were no lost souls with Esther and Don Norbut at the post. Spinning the lucky wheel for the opportunity quilt winner, Marva Packey and Ko Nakamura made us dizzy. Sadly, this all ends with two mighty souls Kris Kline and Kim Kelly doing takedown of our fun quilt display. NOW DO YOU FEEL LUCKY, WELL DO YA? Well, we sure were! As you know, TV personality Huell

Howser filmed and interviewed many of you gals and guys. This was aired on KCET, May 3rd and May 19th. SHOW DVD‟S CAN BE PURCHASED AT OUR GUILD MEETINGS FOR A SPECIAL $10 ( TV price $22.95) PRICE FOR OUR GUILD FROM HUELL HOWSER. Gals and guys have been calling out of state for the show DVD. For S&H add $2.50. Just give me a call and it‟s on its way! Thanks to Barb Gibson for sharing her DVD player for all to view the show. We sold out our first order of 50 with more on the way from Hollywood, you lucky quilt stars! Oh, speaking of stars, Ko

Nakamura shared that she just purchased a new 42 inch TV to view herself with friends and family!

What a thrill and memory to share! Huell loved the presentation of the western quilt “California Gold” made by our talented international quilter, Pat Rollie. You truly are all stars and what a keepsake memory. If you‟d like to be a part of this one of a kind quilt show produced by and for people like you…. if you‟re passionate about the romance of the past, spirit of the present, and the promise of the future of quilting, then get on board for the 2012 show with Rasa Read, chairperson!

Happy Trails to You! Love always, Your friend, Heidi P.S. We saddled up the “2011” show team for a thank you “Round Up, Wrap Up” meeting and potluck (from Frances‟ chuck wagon show cookbook) at my home, May 3rd. This meeting was for the 2011 show team. Great critiques and fun for future shows! Please get your show procedure books together for 2012. Thanks again!

Loving Hands would like to invite members to join in the fun on July 8th at 10:00 a.m.,

at 1038 E. Elmwood, Burbank ~We will be making kits and labels.

This short note is to express my sincere appreciation for your participation in my Call For Quilts For Tornado Victims in Joplin, Missouri. Your unhesitating support was truly

awesome. I remain truly overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity and selflessness. We assembled/collected approximately 200 fabulous quilts. Fabric Patch in Montclair

donated 60 beautiful pillowcases. Some people drove 45 minutes to 90 minutes one way to deliver their beautifully handcrafted treasures. My son, my daughter-in-law, and I drove approximately 3200 miles round trip to Missouri

and back non-stop in about 72 hours. We delivered the quilts to the First Episcopalian Church in Carthage, Missouri - just 10

miles from Joplin. Relief workers had been meeting at that church to receive direction from Americorp, FEMA, and National Guard. They used the kitchen at that church daily to

prepare meals for distribution. Fortunately members of the First Episcopalian Church had formed a quilt guild.

So, they appreciated the quilts we delivered. While we were en route back home, we received word that members had already sorted and tagged the quilts and begun

distribution to those in need. A note was enclosed with each quilt explaining who made the quilt.

During our brief stay in Missouri we toured the wreckage.

Even though we were prevented from stopping by patrolling police officers,

we were able to see enough to appreciate the devastation and be certain that your gifts of quilts are necessary and

will most assuredly be appreciated.

Thank you sincerely for making all this possible.

Blue fabric: cut four 3 1/2” squares and two 3 7/8” squares

Red fabric: cut four 3 7/8” squares

White fabric: cut four 3 1/2” squares and two 3 7/8” squares

Make four half square triangle units of red and white from the 3 7/8” squares and four units of blue and red half square triangles from the 3 7/8” squares.

To make the half square triangle units match one red and one white

square with right sides together. On the lighter colored fabric draw a diagonal line from one corner to the other and stitch ¼” away from

both sides of the drawn line.

After stitching along both sides of the drawn line, cut along the drawn line to make two

triangle units.

After all of the triangle units have been made press the seam allowance towards the darker fabric.

Lay the blocks out as shown in the diagram and sew into rows, then sew the rows

together to make the block.

The block should measure 12 ½” when complete.

Glendale Quilt Guild Executive Board Meeting Place: La Canada Congregational Church Fellowship Hall, June 2, 2011 Present: Barbara Gibson, Mary Ann Kroening, Esther Norbut, Corinne Gurney, Colleen Shier, Sharon Bishop, Karen Waller, Carolyn Hodapp, Crystal Dudley, Melinda Helscher, Nan Maples, Pat Golditch, Annette Guerrero, Barbara Stuart, Brandi Nalley, Margie Emmons, Heidi St. Royal, Caren Cooke Ryan, Sue William, Pat Rollie, Frances Brannon Absent: Joni Kellam, Rasa Read Meeting Opening: Called to order at 6:30 p.m. by President Barbara Gibson. She welcomed the members of the new Executive Board and our guests. The potluck dinner was enjoyed by all prior to the business of the joint meeting. Minutes of the last board meeting were unanimously approved as written.

Treasurer: Margie Emmons reviewed copies of the May Treasurer‟s Report and the budgets for the 2011-2012 year. After discussion on both the new Budgets was held on the individual items, with some adjustments made, the Board will recommend the Budgets for approval by the membership at the June Guild meeting. She also advised that the Guild now has enough of a profit to return a portion of the money borrowed from the Oppenheimer fund, back to the fund. Motion was made and seconded that we move the money to the Oppenheimer account. The motion passed and the Board will recommend to the membership at the June meeting that this money be transferred to the Oppenheimer fund.

New Business: The July 7th Board meeting will be at

Mary Ann Kroening‟s home. Fat quarters for June will be animal prints. Discussion was held whether or not to continue the fat quarter draw, due to minimal participation. It will be put to vote by the membership in June meeting.

Newsletter: President Gibson thanked Karen Waller for all her hard work on this year‟s newsletter, and advised that all information for the newsletter will now be e-mailed to our new Newsletter Editor, Melinda Helscher, and is due Monday, June 13.

Programs/Workshops: Corinne Gurney reported:

June: Ice Cream Social and Sales tables to sell your items $10 each (can be shared).

July: Pat Rollie „The Magic of Mistakes‟. August: Anne Copeland will appraise your quilt (limit one per member), with a program following at Patchwork Penguin “How to Restore Quilts”.

September: Margarette Tate, regarding Applique.

Membership: President Gibson commended Barbara Stuart for the lovely New Member Tea held in May. Barbara Stuart said member sign ups were coming in steadily. She is meeting with Annette and Louise in June to go through everything and transfer the leadership. The $500 basket of gifts from our affiliates will be presented in

a drawing of the members who completed their Passport. While there were only 6 members who completed their passport this year, at the urging of the Board to continue this program, she and Corinne Gurney will volunteer to do this job again for the 2011-2012 year due to the enthusiastic response she has gotten from our affiliates. The members will be encouraged to participate when they see how good a chance they have of winning the basket. One change will be that the purchases at the Show will be eligible for Passport participation. The Board thanked them for taking on this job again, even though Barbara Stuart will not be the Membership Chair for the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

Parliamentarian: Nan Maples stated that in accordance with the Alice Smith motion recorded at the last meeting, the information on the status of Loving Hands is in the newsletter and the expanded details are now on the website. The Board drafted the expended details and they are the only expanded details reported as yet. She asked that the password to the website be announced again at the general meeting.

Loving Hands: Loving Hands member Sue Williams reported that 60 quilts were sent to the Joplin tornado victims, carried personally by Guild member Denise Kristof to Joplin, MO. She also presented report forms to be presented in the future, reporting monthly activity, monthly distribution of quilts and a volunteer sign-in log to keep track of the Loving Hands activity in the future, in an effort to meet the Bylaws requirements. Motion was made and seconded that the Board rescind the previous action removing Loving Hands as our charity quilt outlet and instead allow Loving Hands, under new leadership, a 6 month probationary period to give them a chance to conform to the requirements of the Bylaws. A lengthy discussion, pro and con, was held. One of the points made was that Loving Hands needs to make participation more accessible to more members, especially those who work and cannot attend the Friday daytime meeting. The motion passed, however, per our Parliamentarian, due to the fact that it will be necessary for Alice Smith to withdraw her motion, this action is contingent on her response. It was pointed out that she will not be at the Guild meeting until July, so action will be on hold until then. President Gibson will give the Loving Hands organization a copy of the requirements needed to continue to be our charitable quilt outlet. Esther Norbut presented a list of ideas for possible adoption by the Guild. She said the most important one was to approach the membership again regarding getting their newsletter on line to save the Guild approximately $10 per year. The balance of the list is to be read and discussed at a future meeting. Meeting adjourned: 9:35 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Frances Brannon

made and seconded to accept the new budgets for the 2011-2012 year

and carried unanimously.

Program: The ice cream social topped the meeting, with active shopping

going on and on.

Meeting Adjournment: 8:50 p.m.

Respectfully submitted Frances Brannon

Glendale Quilt Guild General Meeting

Glendale Central Library June 8, 2011

Meeting Called to Order: 6:30 p.m. by President Barbara Gibson. She

welcomed the new Board members and gave a big thank you to the

outgoing members. Next Executive Board Meeting will be at Mary Ann

Kroening‟s home July 7at 6:30 p.m. Next months‟ speaker will be Pat Rollie,

with dinner prior to the meeting at the Outback Steakhouse at 5:00 p.m.

Colleen Shier will be our new Program Chair, so try to advise her if you plan

on attending. Unfortunately we lost one of our founding members, Pat Akers

passed away, with her service that day. Quilter‟s Run will be June 16th to

19th and 23

rd to 26

th. There will be some great prizes this year. She said

„Doing right is not always what is popular. The Board thought it was

important that the membership be aware of the extent of the problems with

Loving Hands and why the leader of Loving Hands needed to be replaced as

quickly as possible. The problems had existed for many years. The

reporting requirements governing this organization are in place to satisfy the

trust placed in it by the membership. No committee or person should be

exempt or consider itself exempt from this requirement. Having said that,

this month the Board met with Loving Hands members who are anxious to

continue as the Guild‟s special committee responsible for charitable quilts

giving. After extensive discussion, the Board is pleased to announce it re-

instated Loving Hands as the special committee responsible for charitable

quilt giving for a probational 6 month period starting July 1. Over the next 6

months, Loving Hands will work to continue charitable quilt giving, begin the

process of accurate record-keeping and make regular reports to the Guild

membership on the committee‟s activities and involve more of the

membership in their program. The Board selects its candidates who are

interested in leading Loving Hands committee into the future. Interested

candidates who are interested should contact the nominating committee

head, Nan Maples, by July 15th.”

Actions Taken: The minutes of the May meeting were approved by the

membership as written. It was presented to the members whether or not to

continue the Fat quarter Draw, considering the minimal participation. The

motion was made, seconded and carried to discontinue the fat quarter draw

at the present time.

Treasurer’s Report: Margie Emmons reviewed the income and expense

figures for the month of May and reviewed the budgets for the Guild and the

Quilt Show for the coming year. Due to the large bank balance, the

Executive Board has approved that we take some of this money and return it

to the Oppenheimer account to replace some of the money that was

removed earlier and we will be doing that. Voting will be prior to the first

break. Any final receipts you might have for this year should be turned in

right away.

Corresponding Secretary: Sharon Bishop announced that Kim Smith‟s

twins were born on April 26th, a boy, Jack and a girl, Lucy. There is a need

for A-positive blood at Good Samaritan Hospital for the twins.

Penny Knapp is going to have back surgery Friday 5/13 Parliamentarian: Nan Maples said you already know that as a

consequence of the Board resolution that took place at the last meeting, we

are soliciting applications for the chairmanship of Loving Hands. The Board

has put together a list of what we are looking for so that it is very clear and

everybody can be on an equal footing if they want to apply for the job. If you

want that list copies are available tonight. She asked that you see her at the

break if you wanted to know what the criteria are for going forward to lead

the charitable arm of the Guild. Secondly, as a consequence of the vote that

the Board took at its last meeting, there is an open motion on the floor (Alice

Smith‟s motion). Alice is not at the meeting, and she is the only one who

can withdraw that motion from the floor. The first part, to reinstate Loving

Hands is moot. However, the second piece of the motion is still there, and

we are going to wait until Alice returns from out-of-town and she will be at

the July meeting, and give her an opportunity at that meeting to chose or not

chose to withdraw the motion, per Roberts Rules of Order. Programs: Corrine Gurney announced upcoming programs:

July – Pat Rollie “The Magic of Mistakes”;

August – Anne Copeland - “Antique Quilt Show Comes to Glendale” She will be giving quilt appraisals (limit of one quilt per member for appraisal), with a workshop on Saturday at Patchwork Penguin “How to Restore Quilts” on Saturday at Patchwork Penguin “How to Restore Quilts”

By Anne Copeland, AQS Certified Appraiser and

Quilt Restoration Specialist

Whether you have an old quilt that is sadly in need of attention, a top that is unfinished but perhaps something you might like to finish, but are not quite sure how to deal with its challenges, or perhaps have old blocks that seem like something you might enjoy putting together, this class will get you started in the

right direction. Supply list: Things you can bring to use (Ann will have most of these things if you don't have them and we can share.): Needle and appropriate colored threads

(Ann has embroidery threads for any of you who might

be using those) Scissors, Ruler, Rotary cutter and cutting mat Bring a machine if you intend to start putting a top together, though you might want to just work on laying out your blocks and doing any work to them to get them ready for machine sewing.

Ann will have other materials you will need and of

course our wonderful store will also have the

remainder for you as needed.

Guild Survey Results…

Results of survey for new books for the library

The tally is in. The big winner is the oldie but comprehensive Pieced Borders, the Complete Resource. Half of those who voted said yes to

this book. What I failed to do when compiling the survey was to check out the availability of

the older books. So I will donate my copy, because on Amazon this book costs $147 new.

The other books that received a higher percent of votes were

Color Mastery and Elly Sienkiewicz’ Beloved Baltimore Album Quilts

Borders & Finishing Touches Bead Creative Art Quilts Fresh*Quilting.

The Quilt Book Corner “Heart for a Hero”

by Author Ed Ditto and quiltmaker Laura D. Patrick

Losing your love is like losing yourself. It happened to

Bebe Warner fifty years ago, and it's happening to her granddaughter PJ today. Nobody ever suspected that Bebe perfect wife, perfect grandmother, and quilter extraordinaire led a secret life. Not even PJ, though she's desperately guarding a secret of her own. Author Ed Ditto's novel takes inspiration from his cousin Laura

D. Patrick's homey quilt to cover deep themes of loss and regret, acceptance and recovery. Historical accuracy concerning the Korean War and a searing

look at post-partum depression interwoven with the healing powers of quilting make this novel appealing to numerous audiences.

Do you have a VCR player? I have

approximately 15 self-recorded tapes of Simply

Quilts, dating back to 05-06. Some of these

feature well-known quilters such as Sally Collins

and Kaffe Fasset. Our home has moved on to

DVD’s so I can no longer use these.
