IN THIS MONTH...Hi everyone, second month in England... adapting to this weather, the culture, the people and everything... and I have to say, like the song, “I feel good!!”

The last weekend I went to Haworth, a wonderful little town with some volunteers and friends. It was my first excursion out of my project, although

with the project I have done more and I really liked it, It has been nice to see some peaceful countryside again. Talking with an old local man I learnt that

birdsong announces the warm and sunny weather!!

This month I would like to say a special thank you to Eva for the conversations, for her help, for our jokes, cushions, slides and many laughs; for the cycle journeys and her good work, that

is making mine easier...Thank you!

On my on-arrival training in Bradford I discovered a nice place just in the centre of the city recently opened. It looks like a hand made shop, but in the first floor you can find music, art, an exhibition space, activities.

It seems to be very open to initiatives and they have many activities and information about

Bradford so maybe it is a good place to visit and get to know an interesting opportunity to learn or exchange information and skills.

You can find opportunities to volunteer, interesting people such as photographers, dancers, visual artists. You can learn some tips to improve the presentation of your CV or to find work.

Hi all,

I’m Lilla, an EVS volunteer from Hungary. I moved to England to volunteer in a primary school in Leeds for a year. I have already written about my project previously so this time I would rather like to focus on the EVS life outside of the project. EVS is not only about volunteering for an organization but it is also about discovering a different culture.

One of the best ways to do so is – of course – travelling. Therefore, I have recently visited Scotland and in this article I would like to share this experience with you.

I was really happy when Nóra, my Hungarian friend of mine booked her flight ticket to visit me and to go on an Edinburgh-Glasgow Scottish trip with a stop in Newcastle.

After a weekend in Leeds, we first headed to Newcastle. Newcastle is beautiful city just at the end of the famous Hadrian’s Wall, close to the Scottish border.

We spent our first day walking around the city centre and the wonderful riverside with a series of giant bridges crossing the River Tyne. I am an active member of CouchSurfing so we spent the night at another CouchSurfer’s place. The next day we visited the beach and the small seaside villages of South Shields and Tyremouth before leaving Newcastle for Edinburgh.

Edinburgh really is the capital of Scotland for a reason and it absolutely deserves its title. The 2.5 days was definitely not enough for exploring this magnificent city.

The medieval streets of the Old Town with the mystic Edinburgh Castle really takes you back in time and surrounds you with the unique Scottish atmosphere. The Calton Hill is not to be missed either – the top of the hill gives you a breathtaking view towards the city centre.

On the first day we had lunch in a lovely local restaurant. Needless to say, we had the most well-known traditional Scottish dish; the haggis (with neeps and tatties – that is turnip and potato).

Thanks to our Scottish CouchSurfing host we had the chance to meet a bunch of locals and got quite an introduction to the Scottish culture (and slang!).

Our last destination was Glasgow. Being rather an industrial city Glasgow doesn’t attract with its architectural beauty like Edinburgh does. Instead, its charm lies in what is hidden under the surface: its superfriendly Glaswegian people and the endless opportunities including its active cultural scene, busy nightlife and the vast range of shopping possibilities. While Glasgow obviously has less tourist attractions and it is a much less touristy place than Edinburgh, it has some hidden treasures such as the spooky Necropolis right next to the Glasgow Cathedral.

All in all, I honestly fell in love with Scotland and the Scottish people and I am definitely gonna return in the future.

Until then, I keep on eating the good old haggis – after recently discovering that it is sold even in the supermarkets of Leeds!

After this and my previous trips in the UK, I think I could get beyond the surface and got to know more about the British culture. Therefore I feel like my EVS is a full EVS experience that combines both work and life experience.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH:

I’m going to share with you all, my mum’s recipe of the most typical desert of Easter in Spain. She doesn’t understand about quantity or time, she always says: at a guess, or “when actually smells”...

Torrijas /Pain perdu (French toasts)

Ingredients:

- Dry Bread (better a baguette or loaf than sandwich bread, anyway it can be done with both).- Milk.- Sugar.- Cinnamon & cinnamon stick.- A bit of lemon peel.- 1 egg.- Vegetable oil.

Process:

1. Warm up the milk with sugar, cinnamon stick and a bit of lemon peel take off the fire.2. Beat an egg.3. Put the bread slides soaking on the milk just 2’. 4. Take them out with love and care and coat in egg/batter.5. Fried them in hot vegetable oil.6. Put them on kitchen paper, put on them some sugar with cinnamon 7. Allow them to cold, and enjoy it!! You can also put them on the fridge for one o two hours if you prefer.
