Quad City

UT Martin hosted their annual homecoming festivities from Oct. 4th thorough the 6th this year. From rope pull to pyramid, homecoming attracts students, alumni, and locals from the surrounding areas to come and enjoy the activities. Each year a theme is chosen, this year the theme was ‘A Roarin Good Time’ mimicking the 20’s. The ending event, right before the homecoming football game, is Quad City.

Quad City is an outdoors event where students, UTM’s departments, student organizations, fraternities, and sororities are invited to set up tents in the Quad and raise awareness for their respective organization, fundraise, or host their organizations alumni. Each tent is decorated, typically according to the homecoming theme. Students, professors, locals, and alumni are all encouraged to come and visit Quad City and to see the various tents and organizations.

BeanSwitch set up shop right outside of the Humanities building and decorated their tent in a 20’s fashion to mirror the homecoming theme. In the tent, staff members sold wristbands, lanyards, stickers, and can cozies. All of the offered items had the saying ‘Literacy & Creativity’ written on them. All proceeds went directly to the magazine and aiding in the publication costs of the magazine. They also offered hair spray colors and face painting, with all proceeds going back to the magazine.

During Quad City, all tents are judged in different categories according to which tent was decorated the best. BeanSwitch falls under the student organizations category. This year BeanSwitch took first place in the student organizations category, earning a trophy for the English department.

We are so proud of all of our staff members for all of their hard work and dedication to the BeanSwitch magazine!

The BeanSwitch offers two publications per year. The fall issue is published online while the spring issue is a print-ed publication. Each issue has a reveal party hosted on the campus of the Uni-versity of Tennessee at Martin where the published art pieces are displayed and the published poems and short stories are read allowed for all to hear and enjoy.

Each semester the staff members of BeanSwitch host a party for all published artists, writers, friends, and family for the reveal of the latest issue. For fall semesters, the magazine is an online edition while in spring semesters the magazine is published in hard copy and handed out free of charge.

The parties tend to be themed after the current issue. For example, last year the staff members hosted a western themed party to reflect the western art on the cover. This year the party will be a fall themed event.

At the reveal party, published authors are invited to read excerpts of their pieces aloud while the published artists are encouraged to bring their original art pieces to be displayed for all of the partygoers to see and admire. Refreshments are provided for the guests and the executive staff typically gives a brief introduction and dedication of the magazine before the readings begin.

Guests are invited to view the art pieces while live music is played; typically a UTM student performs for the guests.

The BeanSwitch literary & arts magazine will be hosting their biannual reveal party for the Fall 2013 Issue on December 2nd. The event will take place in the McCombs Center Tennessee Room. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

We hope to see you there!
