It’s that time of the year -

COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE LETTERS!! HUSD seniors are receiving acceptance letters for college and making decisions about where

they will begin college in the fall. This month, we are highlighting an EXCEPTIONAL SENIOR

from each high school. Take a look at where these students are going to school and their

stories. And also, take a look at all of the programs and summer offerings that are available to

our students.

Look where this Farmer is going off to

COLLEGE! We see great things in Haywards future!

Luis Araiza Luis Araiza is a senior at Hayward High School. Since his elementary years, Luis has always wanted to attend

college. His parents did not attend college but ensured that he and his sister would attend college.

Luis has faced some challenges in his home life as he has been preparing for college. When asked about his

most significant struggle, Luis cites his 9th grade year as the most challenging. During that time, family

struggles made it hard for Luis to focus. But with the help of Puente and his affiliation with Summer Search,

these programs helped to maintain his focus on his academics. Luis has participated in several different

programs here in HUSD. He played the flute and the Oboe in band, the violin with the orchestra, and was a

drum major in the marching band. Luis will be attending UC Berkeley in the fall and is Undeclared at the

moment, but is leaning towards law, business or economics. When asked about his 5 year plan, Luis stated

that he will be going to graduate school to further his education.

CONGRATULATIONS LUIS ON BEING AN EXCEPTIONAL SENIOR

MT. EDEN STUDENTS HAVE TONS OF

PRIDE FOR THEIR SENIORS!

LOOK WHERE THIS MONARCH IS OFF TO!

Anthony Olivares Anthony is a senior at Mt. Eden High School. Anthony, since his elementary years, has always wanted to

attend college. His parents did not attend college but ensured that he and his sister would attend college.

Anthony has faced some challenges in his home life as he has been preparing for college. When asked about

his most significant struggle, Anthony cites his 10th and 11th grade years as the most challenging. On top of

taking accelerated classes, honors classes, AP classes and being a part of the band as a cello player, the

marching band and orchestras, and being a part of the varsity tennis team, Anthony had to balance these

responsibilities while facing some major family challenges. He has found a way to balance all of these

situations and has come out on top.

Anthony will be attending California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo majoring in Computer

Engineering. When asked about his 5 year plan, Anthony stated that he will be going to graduate school to

further along his passion of Computer Engineering.

CONGRATULATIONS ANTHONY ON BEING AN EXCEPTIONAL SENIOR

LET’S GIVE A BIG SHOUT OUT TO THIS

2015 LANCER GRADUATE!

Roland Ocansey

Roland and his family moved to Hayward 5 years ago from Liberia. Roland is a senior

that plays defensive end and tight end for Tennyson. He started football in his

sophomore year and has turned his athletic abilities into a FOUR YEAR FOOTBALL

SCHOLARSHIP TO UC DAVIS.

Roland will attend UC Davis in the fall and major in Communications.

His goal is that in 5 years he will either be in the NFL on the 49ers, or he will become

an NFL Analyst working for the 49ers.

When asked about college, Roland stated that his goal from his freshman year until

now was to attend college. He sights the most significant struggle with getting

prepared for college was balancing academics and athletics. And from his list of

classes, it has definitely been a balancing act. Roland has taken AP English, AP

Calculus, AP Literature, AP Government and AP Statistics.

CB Programs Have A Successful Customized

College Tour to Southern CA!

College Bound Hayward, Rising Scholars and

Brotherhood truly enjoyed their customized Southern CA

College Tour during the HUSD Spring Break! They left

Tennyson High on a comfortable chartered bus on

Monday, March 30th at 7am! Students, parents and

chaperones were very excited about the trip.

The families were able to meet key decision makers who

committed to helping them with their education… some

waived application fees while others committed to

reviewing personal statements. It was indeed a

customized tour and CB staff are still receiving grateful

emails from the CB families.

The tour was sponsored by Concerned Parents

Alliance/College Bound Programs. Customized tours

were arranged at CSU Channel Islands, UC Irvine,

Chapman College, University of Southern CA (USC),

UCLA and UC Santa Barbara!

Testimonials from CBH Families

until I went on this trip! Thank you so

much!”

we appreciate it because it made a

difference!”

“Thanks to Dr. Willis and her staff, this

was one of the best trips of my life!”

The 2014-15 academic year has been a great one for students enrolled in Ms. Sherri’s Web, Graphics

and Digital Design Class. Juniors and Seniors from various schools in Hayward, San Leandro, San

Lorenzo and Castro Valley are learning the Principles of Design as well as how to Design Print and

Web-based Graphics for Clients with a wide-range of creative needs. To date, each have been given

several opportunities to showcase their talent for local businesses/organizations including Hayward

Unified School District, Eden Area ROP and Lincoln High School.

On Saturday, March 7, 2015 the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) Youth Innovator Hackathon was held at

SAP's Success Factor in South San Francisco. Nearly 70 youth from 6 Bay Area High Schools participated: San

Leandro, Hayward, Kipp King, Galileo, John O'Connell, and Lincoln. The students were divided into heterogeneous

teams and were asked to design an APP to solve problems in areas of Health, Education and the Environment. They

learned Design Thinking Methodology from NFTE resident guru, Dean Sivara, and scores of other volunteers from

Stanford, SAP, and YEP who were in attendance.

Eden Area ROP instructor, Rick Charles selected

student Isaiah Patrick from his Business and Finance

class that he teaches at Hayward High School to

participate. As a result of his inspirational experience, Isaiah

who teamed up with other students from San

Leandro HS and Galileo HS, managed to take home

the top prize of the day of $1,000.00. He proudly

represented both Hayward Unified School District

sequence of high school courses that students must

complete (with a grade of C or better) to be minimally

Unified School District does require specific courses,

along with passing of the CAHSEE to receive a high

approved Foreign Language courses are

Students need to pass every semester with an
