The weeks continue to get busier with our Swim Sports for years 1-6
on Friday, with the Parent-Teacher Exchange next week and then
our fete on Sunday 4th March. Thank you to all the parents that have
already put their names down to assist. If you have not yet volun-
teered and have some free time, please do not hesitate to add your
name to the sandwich board at the office before or after school. If
you cannot get to school but are still willing and able to help with
the fete, please contact the Parents Association via email: mppspar-
Drop off zone
With many new parents at the school I encourage you to please en-
sure you read the information regarding its rules. Included in this
newsletter is the flyer from the council regarding this. The drop off
zone is installed, monitored and policed by the Moonee Valley City
Council (MVCC), not the school. They are regularly patrolling to en-
sure everyone is safe around the school and the rules are followed.
Please note Bec and I are regularly out there too, this is to monitor
the students and remind drivers of the rules if needed.
Some major points that I encourage parents to adhere to, include:
Drivers MUST remain in the vehicle at all times (this means NOT
getting out of the car- say your good byes to your children
before you get to school)
Students should always use the door on the foot path side
(Students should also have their bag close by ready to hop
out unassisted)
Do NOT undertake a U-turn in Bent St (please complete a lap
around the school)
In the afternoons, please:
Do NOT wait in the zone if your child is not there! If your child is
not waiting for you complete another lap of the school until
they arrive waiting for you at the zone. Parents are encour-
aged to wait to leave your home a bit later (after 3.20pm)
and inform your child/ren to come straight to the waiting ar-
ea; this will help ensure your child is at the zone waiting to be
picked up.
You cannot park in the Drop-Off Zone between 3-4pm (and 8-
9.30am); during this time it is a no-standing area and you will
be fined.
Ensure you speak with your child to make sure they are waiting on
the footpath ready to be picked up.
Family Handbook
The 2018 Family Handbook is now available on the school website
(parent download section, password is: mpps). This document fully
explains everything about the school, including programs, curricu-
lum, processes and other relevant parent information. Most families
will have received this when they enrolled but I encourage everyone
to check out our latest edition.

Thank you to those families that attended the information nights. We hope you found them informative and we
look forward to working collaboratively as the year progresses. Information (booklets or presentations) from the
evening are now on the school website in the parent download section. www.mpp.vic.edu.au (remember if you
are accessing the parent download section the password is: mpps).
Parent- Teacher Exchange
Our parent teacher exchange will be held on Tuesday 20th February, except for 5/6C which will be held on
Wednesday 28th February and Thursday 1st March. Full details regarding this was sent home yesterday with each
child and is available on the school website at http://www.mpp.vic.edu.au/our-school/parent-teacher-
exchange/ .This 10 minute session is the best opportunity for you to inform your child’s teacher about their learn-
ing style, strengths or weaknesses and a great opportunity to meet the teacher and discuss the year ahead.
Bookings are open now via www.schoolinterviews.com.au with the event code: xh6t4 or for 5/6C the event
code: 62566. Swimming Sports
Our 2018 school swimming sports carnival for year 1-6 students will be held on Friday 16th February. Please ensure
all notes are handed to your class teacher by tomorrow (Thursday). This event is held at the Queens Park pool,
where students and teachers walk up and participate in events ranging from freestyle, relays to wading & cork
scramble events. Emma our PE teacher and Jess & Jenny (Year 1/2 Team Leaders) are busy preparing for the
event. We also need parent helpers to assist; if you are available please indicate on the signup sheet located
outside the office and read and sign the Child Safe Standards Code of Conduct.
School Council for 2018
The first school council meeting of 2018 will be held on Wednesday 28th February. This is also the final meeting
for some serving members of council. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the current council for their
tireless work over the past year; this include Kevin Manion who will be stepping down. All council members give
up their time to work as a cohesive group to improve the school for all our students and families. Much of this
work goes unnoticed during the after school hours. On behalf of the whole school community, I thank you!
The new council will be welcomed at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for Wednesday 28th
March 2018. All council members stand for a two-year period and then need to re-nominate to be eligible for
another two-year period. This means we have a nomination process and possible election to conduct over the
next few weeks.
There are four parent vacancies and two Department of Education and Training (DET) staff vacancies.
Council Elections
Message from the President
"I'd like to welcome everyone back to the 2018 school year and also welcome our new students, parents and
carers. There are many ways to be involved in your child's education be it volunteering with reading in class, be-
ing active in the Parents Association (PA) or becoming involved in school council. Each year members of coun-
cil retire and new members are elected so there is always an opportunity to become involved. I'd encourage
you to read the information below and think about nominating for school council as it is a rewarding experi-
ence."
Cheers,
Scott Cutler (father of Hamish- Yr. 5 and Audrey- Yr. 3)
It is now time to begin the process for filling positions on School Council for 2018. Included below is information
regarding:
The role of council
2018 MPPS School Council vacancies
Elections
PRINCIPAL REPORT (cont)
Respect Optimism Care Collaboration
What is a school council and what does it do?
All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally constituted bodies that are given
powers to set the key directions of a school within state-wide guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able
to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students.
What is the function of school council?
Establish the broad direction and vision of the school within the school's community
Participate in the development and monitoring of the school strategic plan
Develop, review and update school policies
Develop, review and monitor the Student Engagement Policy and the School Dress Code
Raise funds for school-related purposes
Approve the annual budget and monitor expenditure
Maintain the school’s grounds and facilities
Enter into contracts (e.g. cleaning, construction work)
Report annually to the school community and to DET
Generally stimulate interest in the school in the wider community
Who is on the school council?
For most school councils, there are three possible categories of membership:
A mandated elected Parent category – more than one-third of the total members must be from this catego-
ry. Department of Education and Training (DET) employees can be Parent members at their child’s school as
long as they are not engaged in work at MPPS.
A mandated elected DET employee category – Department employees include staff members at the school.
Members of this category may make up no more than one-third of the total membership of school council.
The principal of the school is automatically one of these members.
An optional Community member category – members are co-opted by a decision of the council because of
their special skills, interests or experiences. DET employees are not eligible to be Community members.
Generally, the term of office for all members is two years. The term of office of half the members expires each
year, creating vacancies for the annual school council elections.
Why is Parent membership so important?
Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the di-
rection of the school.
Those parents who become active on a school council find their involvement satisfying in itself and may also
find that their children feel a greater sense of belonging.
How can you become involved?
The most obvious way is to vote in the elections, which are held in Term 1 each year. However, ballots are on-
ly held if more people nominate as candidates than there are positions vacant. In view of this, you might
seriously consider
standing for election as a member of the school council
encouraging another person to stand for election.
Do I need special experience to be on school council?
No. What you do need is an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to
help shape the school’s future.
Council will meet a minimum of eight times a year, once of the month in the evening from 7.00-9.00 pm. In
the past this has been the last Wednesday of each month, however this may change. Councillors are also
expected to sit on one of the following committees:
Finance
Education
Facilities
Out of School Hours Care (OSHC)
PRINCIPAL REPORT (cont.)

Repeated Information
Child Safe Information
Child Safe Standards
With the introduction of the Ministerial Order 870 from the Government in 2016 in the wake of the Betrayal of
Trust Report all schools must now ensure we meet the Child Safe Standards. Implemented last year the stand-
ards strengthen our already existing approaches to preventing and responding to child abuse, and enhance
consistency in how these issues are managed in schools. Due to the start of the school year, I again share this
information with you, to ensure we provide a safe, inclusive and collaborative learning community for our stu-
dents.
All staff, visitors and volunteers working with children in our school (including classrooms, school yard, incur-
sions, stalls, etc) must, before they will be allowed to enter the school:
1. Sign in at the office,
2. Read and sign the Child Safe Code of Conduct at the office every year
3. Provide evidence of holding a relevant qualification. This includes a Victorian Institute of Teaching
card, a Working with Children’s Check card or equivalent.
Any parents, carers or other visitors to the school should not be on the school premises (yard, corridors or
classrooms) during school hours without first signing in at the office.
While our parents helping in the classes won’t start until later this term, if you are planning to assist we encour-
age you to apply for a Working with Children’s Card ASAP. Details can be found at:
www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/. The cost is free to volunteers.
The following Child Safe Standard information is included on our school website: (www.mpp.vic.edu.au/school-council/school-policies/ )

school hours.

Birthday celebrations
At MPPS we believe in celebrating students as individuals, and this may or may not include the
acknowledgement of birthdays. Classes may choose to acknowledge this in their own way, such as
singing happy birthday or wearing a birthday badge/hat in the early years. At times, parents may al-
so wish to provide a special treat for their child’s class on this day.
If you choose to send birthday ‘treats’ for your child’s class, we ask parents to adhere to the following
guidelines:
Please discuss this with the class teacher BEFORE the birthday.
Bring the items to your child’s classroom before 9:00am, to be left with the teacher to hand
out at a time of their choosing. This may vary depending on the classes learning time and most
convenient time for the class on that day.
Please provide only small, individually portioned items (e.g. cupcakes, freddo frog)
No nut or nut products (as per our nut policy)
If home-made please include a list of ingredients.
We appreciate your support with this.

General School Information
Dropping off and picking up
Please Note: Students may not be in the school grounds before 8:45am or after 3:35pm unless they
are attending Before or After School Care. Any students in the yard beyond these times MUST be su-
pervised by their parents. Developing resilience and independence supports student learning. To as-
sist in this we ask parents to ensure that their child carry their own bags to and from the classroom.
Students beyond prep should take their own bags to the bag rack or locker provided before school
and be lined up at the designated places on the bell.
Absences
As attendance is compulsory, each absence must be accounted for by a phone call or note, signed
by the parents, addressed to the home group teacher and sent on the first school day following the
absence. For the benefit of academic and social development we encourage minimal absences.
Please notify the school if your child is going to be absent.
Sun Smart
With the hot weather and summer conditions, it is important for us all to be wary of the sun and the
UV rays. We have a school sun smart policy which can be found at http://www.mpp.vic.edu.au/wp-
content/uploads/2013/05/MPPS-Sun-Smart-policy-2013.pdf. With the swimming sports in the coming
weeks and the hot weather coming, please ensure you read through the document and ensure stu-
dents have hats and sunscreen available when outdoors. Rash vests, hats and sun screen are recom-
mended at the swimming carnival. Staff will be on duty reminding students to be sun smart; however,
I encourage parents to discuss this with your child beforehand as well. Remember students need to
be wearing a hat during recess and lunch until the end of April.
Early Leave
Prep to Year 6 Students are expected to attend for the full day unless permission to leave early is re-
quested. A “Permission to Leave Early Form” must be filled in at the General Office and taken to the
class teacher. This is a safety precaution for your child/ren.
Late Arrival
Please ensure the teacher knows if students are late. The roll is marked electronically by the teachers
each day, therefore the office doesn’t need to be notified.
Bikes
Students may ride bikes and scooters only to school. A bike shed is provided and locked from 9.00 –
3.20 pm each day. Rollerblades and skateboards are not permitted. Bikes and scooters must not be
ridden in the school or on pedestrian crossings to ensure safety. Riding bikes/scooters in the school
yard before and after school is not permitted for safety reasons. Insurance of bikes and scooters is the
responsibility of parents. We strongly encourage insurance in the light of a number of schools report-
ing thefts. Helmets are compulsory by law of the State of Victoria. Children will not be permitted to
ride bikes if they do not have helmets.
Money and other Valuables
Please encourage your children to leave treasured possessions at home. Teachers may look after
money if requested but are not responsible for valuables which students bring to school.
Care of Others Personal Belongings
Students who damage or take others property or belongings will be required to repair or replace the
damaged or lost article. Personal property is often brought to school by students, staff and visitors. This
can include mobile phones, electronic games, calculators, toys, sporting equipment and cars parked
on school premises. The Department does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools
and it has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property.
Respect Optimism Care Collaboration
Welcome to returning school students, parents and carers as well as to our teaching and
support staff.
A special welcome also to new Foundation students and their families. The start of the
Foundation year is always an exciting and sometimes challenging time. My children are
now in years 3 and 5, but I remember well those first few weeks including those discussions:
“yes, you must not lose your hat” (for the 3rd time this week), “yes, we will pick you up from
school” and “yes, those square soft things in the plastic container are called sandwiches
(no more multi-course hot meals from childcare…)”!
The School Council and I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the school com-
munity for their support during 2017 and look forward to the community’s support during
2018. Whether it is reading to children, attending a working bee, helping out at the fete,
donating to the library fund or being involved more formally in the School Council or assist-
ing with fundraising in the Parents’ Association, it is the combined effort of the community
that makes our school just that – a community.
Last week I attended the Foundation students’ information night and had the opportunity
to meet a number of new parents and carers where I was asked about the role of the
School Council. In summary, our School Council is made up of volunteer parents/carers
and teachers who have an overall governance role in the running of the school. We assist
with the preparation of policies and procedures, plan maintenance work, select and con-
tract service providers (Out of School Hours Care, Uniforms etc) and make sure that budg-
ets are allocated and met.
It is important to note that we do not manage the day-to-day operations of the school as
this is the responsibility of the Principal, Matthew Bott, and his staff.
Please keep an eye out in the forthcoming newsletters about nominating for School Coun-
cil. If you are considering nominating and have any questions, please feel free to email me

Each year, as part of our commitment to effective and progressive use of technologies in
the classroom, we ask that student and parents of 3-6 students complete a brief 10-
question survey of how their children use technology. This survey provides us with data
about current behaviours that we use to modify our curriculum. As the use of technology is
changing at an unprecedented rate, current information on behaviours is vital to ensure
our classroom environments and teaching strategies are in line with the needs of our stu-
dents. Students in 3-6 have been completing a student version of this survey at school, so
we will be able to see both student and parent perspectives when we analyse the data.

tive and a great opportunity to share knowledge and tips about gardening.
I encourage you to come along, bring your families and enjoy!
Details about registration follow.
Gardening with children
In a world dominated by technology and homes that
no longer have as much outdoor playspace, it's time
we brought the gardens to the children! In this work-
shop, you and your children will learn what it takes to
make plants grow well and enjoy several activities
together that your children get to take home.
Be inspired with simple activities to engage the kids,

Chess is one of the most powerful educational tools available to strengthen a child’s mind. Most 6-7 year olds
can follow the basic rules and some children as young as 4 or 5 can play. Whatever a child’s age, chess can
enhance concentration, patience and perseverance as well as develop creativity, intuition and memory.
Most importantly, children can develop the ability to analyse and deduce from a set of general principles, to
make tough decisions and to solve problems flexibly.
The chess classes will continue to take the children through a structured chess course with the dual aim of
achieving the maximal educational benefits the game offers and providing an enjoyable learning environ-
ment.
If your child would like to participate in the Chess Club during Term 1 please fill out the form below and return
it to the office before the end of Week 2. Class numbers are limited to 25. Enrolments will be taken on a first-
