Dear Parents and Caregivers Welcome back to term four and a really full on and exciting one it will be. There is always lots of great activities and traditions which are a real hallmark of our school. It is also a term of review and planning for the next year and as principal I have begun this work already. Over the next few months I will ensure I let you know how 2016 is looking at Pongakawa but can tell you already that we will begin with thirteen rooms as our numbers have increased to a level where this is possible from day one rather than opening a room part way through the year. This has enabled us to maintain lower class numbers which is something this school is known for. We have enrolled a number of new students today so a big wel-come to you and your families I know you will enjoy your time with us and quickly make new friends. In the latest Pongakawa Press I spoke about the impact of your child being absent from school I would encourage you to read it if you have not already done so. As parents (me included) I think we sometimes think a day here or a day there off school is not an issue, but actually these mount up and pretty soon our child has had quite a lot of time away from school. There is no doubt this does affect their learning and progress over time. Of course I understand children get sick and when this happens the best place for them is at home where you can really look after them, but do be mindful of other absences or if a pattern seems to be developing. This term I would encourage all children to aim for 100% attendance, let’s see if we can do that. For parents of children moving into year 7, I am in the process of working with suppliers around pricing for chromebooks for 2016. The school supplies these free of charge to all senior students, however there is the opportunity to purchase one either outright or over a period of time if you would like your child to bring this home. There is no school expectation that you buy one, it is purely an option and if you already have a laptop or other device at home children can access their work on this in any case. You will receive more information in regard to this over the next few weeks. Have a fantastic term Yours in teaching Craig Haggo Principal

Wetland Planting A big thank you to all those who came last Thursday to help. It was a great turnout and made the job go very quickly. Last planting day for the year- this Thursday 15th October 9am Depending on numbers we’ll also do some weeding as those pesty weeds are making the most of the warmer weather. Karl has been doing some spot spraying so hopefully by Thursday it will be obvious which ones he’s dealt to. A big thank you again to Glenn Ayo of WBOPDEC for dropping off some more Glyphosphate. He’s impressed with our progress and the little spring which has popped up in the small pond nearest the hill. So bring the usual equipment for planting and weeding – spade, stanley knife, sunhats, refreshments etc.
