Value of the Week

We will be studying the value, Forgiveness, when we return to school next term. It takes great courage to show

forgiveness to someone who has hurt you.

Mahatma Gandhi once said that “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.” He

was aware of how hard it is to not want to take revenge on those who had hurt him. Mahatma Gandhi’s most

famous act of forgiveness came when he visited a man in prison who had tried to kill him two years previously.

As part of the development of the Peace and Prosperity Kitchen Garden at Government House, selected schools from across the State were invited to create a scarecrow. The program was developed as a way of opening up Government House to students from special development schools in a creative and fun way. Emerson was one such, lucky school.

Nine students from the Sustainability class were involved in the project, which involved visiting Government House to officially hand over their scarecrow, meeting the Governor, Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AC. We given a tour of the House too.

Our Sustainability class decided to create a Frida Kahlo (Mexican Artist), inspired scarecrow, as most of the stu-dents had previously studied her in my art class. Recycled materials were gathered and the students worked very productively to create, “FABULOUS FRIDA” as they named her.

Glenn Stephenson and I accompanied the students and we arrived early enough to enjoy our morning tea at the War Memorial and leave a poppy in the poppy wall. Our group then enjoyed a fruit platter in the garden of Government House, before meeting the Governor. Students were then photographed with the Governor and spoke to her about their scarecrow and how they had made it.

The Governor was so overwhelmed with Emerson’s scarecrow that she asked it to be put on the official Instagram page! Wow!!!! Our lucky students and staff were also taken on a tour of the ground floor of the building.

Students admired a huge painted portrait of the Queen, hanging above a plush velvet green couch. A very beautiful chair in which the Queen had sat was the highlight for most of our excited students! They also enjoyed the beautiful lavish and ornate furnishings and architecture and sat with Springvale SDS students at the large, official dining table.

Thanks to Glenn Stephenson, we have some wonderful photos of the day and also a slide show that will be shown this Thursday, at the whole school assembly. Students then went into the garden to admire the large fountain and enjoy the beautiful view of Melbourne city, before saying goodbye and heading back to Emerson.

Well done to:

Ollie D, Freshta K, Yassin N, Blake H, Max W, Celeste B, Chloe C, Cain C and Mihi S.

Also a HUGE thank you Hilary Corlett and Noel Beddoes and his students, Cornileus N and Pokino P for making our

stand.

I would like to thank the whole Emerson community for supporting the PE Department through Coles sports for schools.

At the end of Term 1 we have approximately 21,000 vouchers. This is an outstanding amount and it will ensure we can

purchase plenty of sports equipment.

This Term has been very busy, with many activities every week. Throughout the Term many students got to experience

interschool sport, golf, T20 cricket, lawn bowls, bowling, tree surfing, laser tag, rock climbing, mini golf and

trampoline parks, just to name a few.

Next term is going to be just as busy with interschool sport, cross country, swimming lessons and high intensity fitness

classes.

Have a great holiday and we will see you next term!

Available until 3rd April 2018)
