2018
This week has been filled with many memorable events.
2018 Debutante Ball
On last Tuesday evening, 24 debutantes were presented to our guests of honour,
Glenda and Max Biddington. All assembled guests were amazed at the quality of the
dancing and the sophistication of the event. I would like to thank Jenny La’Brooy, Jane
Ward, Jenny Pottier, Siobhan Liddy and all staff and parents who made this occasion
such a memorable event.
David Stansfield’s Return to Emerson School
David Stansfield, our Senior School Co-ordinator, visited us last Monday having
travelled to Emerson School on public transport in his electronic wheelchair.
David has been in a
rehabilitation program
since receiving serious
neck injuries in a fall in
November last year. He is
gradually making progress
and it was a testimony to
his courage and
determination to get to
Emerson by public
transport.
We wish David well in his
continuing rehabilitation and recovery. David’s return was welcomed by students and
staff.

We will be studying the value, CONSIDERATION, next week.
CONSIDERATION is demonstrated when we think about how our actions affect others. Considerate people
understand how the other people might feel. It is about doing things in a manner that benefits you as well as
others.
Sometimes students may play their music too loud for the other people on their bus. It is important to show
CONSIDERATION by turning your music down or wearing earphones so that the other passengers can ride
in comfort and quiet.

Our first round of budding artists have just completed art history activities on a well-known French artist, HENRI
MATISSE.
MATISSE was the founder of the “Fauvist”, group of artists, (meaning ‘Wild Beasts’). They adopted this name
because their work used combinations of wild, extreme bright colors and energetic brushwork to structure their
compositions.
MATISSE was also very skillful in ‘drawing’ with his scissors and produced some very beautiful collages, again using
bold colour and line.
The halls in Middle School reflect this explosion of bright colour. Students studied the Flamingo and painted some
very bright pink birds incorporating the ‘wild’ use of colour in their backgrounds.
The students also created some wonderful collages, exploring Matisse’s technique in ‘drawing’ with his scissors.
MIDDLE SCHOOL ART
Here are some interesting facts about the HENRI MATISSE:
Matisse was born in France on New Year’s Eve in 1869, and died at the age of 84 in 1954.
Initially trained as a lawyer, Matisse only developed an interest in art when he was 21 years old.
Matisse played the violin as a child and as an adult says he often spent six hours a day playing.
He had a good friendship with artist Pablo Picasso.
Matisse had a lifelong interest in African art and collected African art objects.
In his later years, Matisse could no longer stand for extended periods of time and became confined to a wheelchair. But from this, he developed a technique called ‘painting with scissors’. He used a long stick to assemble the cut-out pieces on his walls until he was happy with the arrangement.
(L'Odalisque, harmonie bleue, painted in 1937)
Fauvism is a style of painting with vivid expressionistic and non-naturalistic use of color that flourished in Paris from 190. Matisse is regarded as the movement’s leading figure.
The biggest single collection of Matisse’s work, comprising more than 500 paintings, is in the Baltimore Museum of Art in USA.
This painting sold for 33 million dollars!!!

SPORT
Last week 45 students braved the cold and rainy weather to take part in the Interschool Soccer and Hockey Carnival
Day. Emerson had 4 soccer teams and 2 hockey teams participating. Throughout the day some teams had to play 5
games to make it to the grand final. A massive congratulations to the A-Grade soccer team and the Girls soccer
team. They both made the grand final. Both games were extremely close and ended up in penalty shootouts.
Unfortunately Emerson finished as runners up in both grades. I would like to thank all of the students who attended
the day for their behaviour and conduct on and off the field.
Looking forward to next term we will have plenty of events on offer for all students. We have Interschool Football and Netball. Football will consist of 2 boys teams and a girls team, netball will be 2 mixed teams. SSSSA Athletics will be held in early September, State Football championships in September and State Hockey in September. During the first couple of weeks next term we will be asking students to register their interest in any of these events.

Avoid low fat ‘diet’ foods which tend to be high in sugar. Instead have
smaller portions of the regular versions.
Southern Melbourne NDIS
Family and Parent Information Sessions
The NDIS is rolling out in the Southern Melbourne Area in September this year. Your school is in this Area. The NDIA, in partnership with DET, will be presenting information sessions for school communities. The presentation will cover how to access the NDIS, the role of the Local Area Coordination (LAC) partner, and how the school can assist. There will be an opportunity for you to ask questions. The session is open to students with a disability (if appropriate) and/or their families/guardians and school staff.
