FROM THE PRINCIPAL WELCOME TO ALL MEMBERS OF OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITYThe beginning of the year saw us celebrate the achievements of the Year 12 cohort from 2016. Learning Achievement through Quality Teaching continues to be one of two main focuses within our school. The staff have worked extremely hard in developing differentiated curriculum and increasing the use of ICT. We have implemented a variety of new intervention strategies, extensive career support and the use of VET programs to support students achieving both their SACE and ATAR pathway. CONGRATULATIONS YEAR 12’SEarlier in Term 4, EJEHS celebrated the Year 12 students finishing their last official day of school for 2017.

The senior students had an opportunity to reflect on their time at EJEHS when we held a Year 12 Celebration, which highlighted their educational journey. A slideshow of events and activities provided the opportunity to reminisce about the great times students and staff shared together. Alicia Renton continued this reflective theme with the delivery of her Year 12 speech. She highlighted the friendship and support students received at EJEHS.

Principal Tim Kloeden congratulated students on their hard work, perseverance, and personal and academic achievements. “It is my belief that all of you have the capacity to achieve great things. Building on the positives and learning from mistakes or misfortunes is the key for future successes and happiness.” Mr Kloeden concluded by reminding the students of their school pride: “As you leave, I encourage each of you to follow in the well-worn footsteps of those students that have gone before you for almost 50 years. Go with the aim to not only maintain the proud history our past students have created, but more importantly, set about creating your own history, setting your own bench marks by living your life to the full.”

The celebrations included acknowledgment of student effort and achievement, with awards for Academic Excellence and Outstanding Attendance. The formalities were completed with a supper and a final opportunity for students and staff to socialise.

From all the staff at EJEHS, we congratulate the Year 12 Class of 2017 and wish you all the best. We all look forward to hearing about your successes and great achievements in the future.

EDWARD JOHN EYRE HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2017 - PAGE 2

A number of smaller facility upgrades have occurred, including the school’s foyer area, a new ICT resource room and upgrades to classrooms in the Eastern wing of the school.

For the first time we conducted a year 12 celebration evening at the school. This event was a suggestion from our year 12 student leaders and was a great demonstration of positive student voice. It was also fantastic to see so many of our parents and community members at the evening to celebrate our year 12 student cohort completing their final year of schooling. The Whyalla Secondary School Alliance has taken on a stronger focus in supporting all of our secondary students from years 8 to 12 this year. Curriculum professional learning communities continue to run and build on the work from last year to develop year 8 to 12 learning programs that support student transition from year 10 to 11.

In addition, we have hosted students from both Stuart and Whyalla High Schools in providing a semester 2 Industry Pathways program. The focus of this program was to provide students the opportunity to trial for our 2 year specialist program in support of their pathway into the trade areas of Engineering, Electro-technology, Automotive and Construction.

In 2018 the three schools will introduce the Whyalla Alliance Sports Program. Led by Sean Sheedy, we will provide a specialist sports program for students in the areas of football, soccer, basketball and netball. In addition we will provide an alternative program for students who specialise in other sports. It is an exciting time for the three schools as we embark on providing students the opportunity to further develop their skills and passion in this area.

I would also like to thank Whyalla High School who this year hosted our stage 1 and 2 music students. Their recognition as a specialist music school has definitely been a great support in providing an ongoing music pathway. Next year we will continue exploring the utilisation of specialist staff across the sites with Whyalla High taking stage 1 and 2 drama. We will be providing stage 1 technology and photography. The support of Whyalla High School Principal Trish Richman and Stuart High School Principal Jeanette Conroy has been significant and as we move into 2018 our school looks forward to our continued growth of the Alliance and working through the complexities of the secondary school system in Whyalla.

We farewell a number of staff this year. I would like to thank James Vincent, Matt &Renee Broadbent, Stephen & Nicole Brooks, Alicia Gillespie, David Eldridge and Zoe Klepper. We thank them all for their contribution to our school community.

Currently, there are some staff members whose placements have not been confirmed as yet , we wish them well for next year.We would also like to acknowledge the involvement and support of the parents and community members of the 2017 Governing Council. It has been a significant year with their participation in providing school direction in a number of initiatives for 2018.

I would like to wish all our school community a Merry Christmas and a great start to the New Year.Tim Kloeden, Principal

PRESENTATION NIGHTEdward John Eyre High School’s Presentation Night was held on Wednesday 13 December at the Middleback Theatre. Students, staff, families and special guests celebrated the achievements of the 2017 EJEHS cohort. The night included the Principal’s address by Tim Kloeden, and the Governing Council Report, by Chair Helen Polkinghorne.

EJEHS also congratulated the 2016 Dux recipient Ibukun Oloruntoba who received a raw score of 98.6. Ibukun’s speech inspired the students by talking about the challenges he overcame whilst transitioning from high school and his successes at university. A highlight of the evening was a performance from the Emma Rawlings, who performed the Katy Perry song: Roar.

Another highlight was the Valedictory Speech given by Athirah Hasnul who reflected on her experiences at Edward John Eyre High School.“When I think about what makes EJEHS such an amazing place to be for the 2 years I’ve been here, it comes down to 2 main groups. Firstly, the teachers, every teacher I’ve had has been brilliant at this school, but it’s not the fact that all of our teachers are so competent and capable that makes our school an amazing place. They actually genuinely care about us. The teachers have wanted us to succeed personally and that’s what makes the classroom such a pleasure to be in. The second group of people that makes our school so excellent is, of course, the students. We’ve got a wide range of students here at EJEHS. We’ve got people who are talented in sports, music, dance, arts and academics. These students are a handful, of the many that come to my mind when I think about EJEHS. Everyone is so different and we’ve learned over this past few years that our differences are real and they’re important but they’re not issues, they are strengths and that’s not a lesson in the syllabus.” Congratulations to all of the students who received an award this year. Year 12 students with 2 or more subject awards and Year 11 students with 5 or more subject awards were invited to attend and receive their award on the night. It was fantastic to see the students represent themselves in a manner which embodied the school values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. We also congratulate the Special Award winners. These students stood out among their peers and received special awards in a particular area. For more information regarding our Special Award winners, please see the school’s website. Thank you to our sponsors, presenters and the Middleback Theatre for your support of our school community. Thank you also to everyone involved in the organisation of the night. Well done to all of the staff and students on a successful year. Your efforts are shown in the hard work and achievements of our school community.

PRE INDUSTRY SCHOOL BASED APPRENTICES 2017The Pre-Industry Program across both year 11 and year 12 has seen many students gain school based apprenticeships in 2017. I wish to acknowledge this great achievement by the students as they continue their transition from school to work. Year 12 Pre-Industry Students:• Josh Cash – McLeod’s Automotive (Certificate III Light Vehicle)• Adrian Clappis – Nordic Refrigeration (Certificate III Refrigeration)• Nathan Heritage – Edward John Eyre High School (Certificate III Horticulture)• Aaron Rogers – Wayne Rogers Electrical (Certificate III Electrotechnology)• Mark Spry – CTI Solar (Certificate III Electrotechnology)• Anthony Vandertuuk – Aquest Electrical (Certificate III Electrotechnology) Year 11 Pre-Industry Students:• Sheldon Galpin – Whyalla Carpentry & Maintenance (Certificate III Carpentry)• Ben Prior – McLeod’s Automotive (Certificate III Light Vehicle)• Jarrod Wallace – Monadelphous in Roxby Downs (Certificate III Heavy Vehicle)• Austin Wilson – Aquest Electrical (Certificate III Electrotechnology)

The Pre-Industry Program is undergoing changes and will be known as the Industry Pathways Program for 2018. I wish to congratulate the above students as they are the final group of students within the Pre-Industry Program to become school based apprentices.

HOUSE SYSTEMThis year has seen the introduction of the House System to Edward John Eyre High School. The 4 houses of Baxter, Flinders, Sturt and Wylie have been competing for points through a range of initiatives. Students are awarded points mostly for their attendance and achievement in school, and also their contribution to House Activities. Throughout Headstart and Transition, students have had the opportunity to provide feedback on the House System and look at different ways that the System can be improved in 2018.

A big congratulations must go to Wylie for being the inaugural winners of the House shield in 2017. Miss Hamlyn and all members of Wylie are to be congratulated on their fantastic efforts this year.

Over the Christmas break there will be some slight changes to the house system. Based on the feedback provided by students, changes will include; revising of how points are awarded, looking at fundraising initiatives as well as ways the house system can better support our students. One of the biggest changes will come in the form of house leadership with different staff filling the role of house leaders in 2018.

A big thank you must go to the House Managers of 2017, Ms Hamlyn, Ms Gillespie, Mr Williams, Ms Lyons and Ms Klepper for all of their hard work this year. Your contribution to the House System has been greatly appreciated. We look forward to what is in store for the 2018 house system.

FEAST FOR ALL THE SENSESIt was wonderful to see a range of students, families, staff and community members at the Feast for All the Senses, Wednesday evening, 15 November.

Stunning year 11 and 12 artworks were on display in the newly renovated corridor. Steve Brooks and his catering students provided a sensational selection of food.

Mick Frost and Chris West’s music students played a range of music during the evening.

Brittany O’Callaghan, Kristy Patterson and Tim Kloeden addressed the crowd of 100 people, who enjoyed the event.

STEM INNOVATION EXPERIENCE STATE WINNERSOn Friday 10 November, 6 students represented EJEHS in the state final for the UniSA STEM Innovation Experience at the Mawson Lakes Campus. In the morning students were introduced to the theme for the day ‘STEMIEANA Jones and the Secret of the Golden Sphere’. They would need to solve a series of problems to correctly identify an urn, whose contents would reveal the sphere. The school that released the sphere in the shortest time would be the winner. Students used their collective knowledge and skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths to complete the following challenges.

Using knowledge of graphing, students ‘knocked out’ the guard so they could enter the temple. Using knowledge of projectile motion and energy conservation, they swung over a ravine to collect filters, and avoid ‘paralysis gas’. They played Mastermind with quarks to get some information about how to identify the correct urn. Students built a tower from blocks collected through solving mathematical problems, so they could complete a circuit and wrote, and used a code to transmit a message to the other half of their team. They completed a volume identification task and unlocked a box to receive an envelope of diffraction gratings needed to reveal the final clue. Using the correct diffraction grating they identified the final clue that led them to identifying which particular urn they would choose based on other clues that were collected throughout the day once they had completed challenges. Picking up an urn stopped the timer, and then it was just a waiting game to see if they had identified the correct urn, and completed the challenge in the shortest time once time penalties had been added.

EJEHS were randomly chosen to test their urn second. Students had identified the correct urn to reveal the golden sphere, but so did the next 4 schools. Times were revealed and EJEHS were announced as the winners with a time of 1hr 46mins 16secs, 11mins 38secs ahead of the other schools who all finished within 3 minutes of each other.

Well done to the students who participated on the day, you worked really well together as a team, focusing on each other’s strengths to complete the challenges, and represented the school fantastically. Also an acknowledgement of the other students who were part of the team to help qualify for the Regional Showcase. Fantastic effort and commitment shown by all involved.

YEAR 10 TRANSITIONDuring Term 4, EJEHS has hosted 2 transition visits allowing year 10 students from both Whyalla High School and Stuart High School to begin familiarising themselves with the school and beginning to understand the expectations of being a student at Edward John Eyre High School.

During the visits students learnt about and contributed to the house system and how it will run in 2018, as well as engaging in a range of activities designed to get to know the school.

Students also had the opportunity to trial all of their subjects for 2018 during the 3-day visit in term 4. It is hoped that through this opportunity, students will have a seamless transition to their final 2 years of schooling.

We would like to thank all students, families and schools for their support of the transition program and look forward to a positive start to the 2018 school year.
