O ur speaker this month is John Moreels who will be presenting his talk entitled

Following John and Sheila’s visits in 2008, 2010 and 2014, John will bring us up to date with this unique photographic project. We will be able to see some of the latest images discovered, how the project has expanded and helped dementia patients and

also how to view over 15,000 images online. Nostalgic Views of the North, Book 3 will be available at a special discounted price, just in time for Christmas (Ward Philipson photographic images – photographs to fall in love with!)

We meet at 2.00pm in the Great Hall at Hexham Abbey for registration and tea/coffee, followed by announcements at 2.20pm and the talk at 2.30pm.

Group News

A HUGE THANK YOU to the convenors who have stepped down recently for all the time and effort they have put into their groups. It is much appreciated: Ann from Sunday Lunch 1, Elizabeth from Craft and Create and Mary and Pat from Out and About.

Thank you also to the new convenors who have kindly taken up the baton. Christine is now convenor for the Craft and Create Group, Trevor for the Welsh Language Group, Jane for Garden Visits, Linda for Sunday Lunch 1, Trish for Canasta and Sally for Yoga.

Names are now being collected for the following groups:

Italian for Holidays (Beginners) 3 members interested Wine Appreciation 2 7 members interested, convenors wanted Jazz Music Appreciation 4 members interested French 1 member interested New book group 1 member interested ‘Detective’ Book Group 1 member interested Music playing / instrumentalists joint venture with Prudhoe U3A.

Please phone Sue on 604787 or email [email protected] to add your name to the lists.

A member has suggested a Food Appreciation Group which is very popular in Mid Northumberland U3A. They hold demonstrations (e.g. artisan bakers, sugarcraft), talks and presentations (members investigate food labelling, local cheeses, history of food, hidden sugars), theme shared meals (e.g. BBQ, afternoon teas, Burns Night Supper), challenges (e.g. Ready Steady Cook, different scones, best meals for one) and visits (e.g. chocolatier, organic farm, Indian restaurant). Other U3A ideas are Food and Cultures (investigating foods from different cultures and/or visiting a restaurant from that culture) or Pudding Exchange ( each member in turn investigates the history and recipe of a pudding on a theme (European, famous, British place names, ) and brings it along for tasting ………….in whatever state it is in!

Our Poetry Group held a successful meeting with Prudhoe U3A Poetry Group 2 last month and hope for other joint readings. They would be delighted to have some more members. Phone Ray on 682022 or Sean on 609320.

Art Appreciation 1, Art Appreciation 2, Play Reading, French for Fun, French Intermediate and Sunday Lunch 2, are all full but the convenors are keeping Waiting Lists, to which your name can be added and

which they will pass on to the Groups Secretary. Alternatively contact the Groups Secretary direct and say which group you are interested in even though there is no space at present.

Finally, from March 2018 we need a new Groups Secretary for a three year term or alternatively two Groups Secretaries – one to help new groups start up and one to support groups that are already running. Contact Sue on 604787 if you would like to

know more. Your U3A needs you!

Helping Hand Given… Do you need help with the Internet or do you have difficulty accessing the newsletter online? Please contact Sue on 604787 and if there is enough interest we may be able to organise a short series of basic computer sessions to get you going.

Helping Hand Wanted!

Would you be interested in a voluntary job? Then why not consider the newly created post of NEW MEMBERS’ CONTACT? We are looking for a cheerful, sociable, approachable member to help New Members in the early weeks when they join or show interest in our U3A. Many people find attending the Monthly Meeting daunting, or stepping into a new group very difficult especially if they are new to the Tynedale area or recently bereaved, retired, divorced or starting out anew in some way. We think that some support and contact would help new or potential members to ‘find their feet’ more easily and feel welcomed. The New Member’s Contact would be on hand at the Monthly Meeting and the Pop-In Coffee Meetings, which are held every 4 months, as well as having a phone number or email that members could contact for assistance. This is not a Committee or Trustee position……….just a very useful job which will require liaising with the Membership and Groups Secretaries. Please apply to the Chair on 606215 or Secretary on 674896.
