1) Message from Dr. Aya Fujiwara, Director of the Prince Takamado Japan Centre

It   is  my   great   pleasure   to   issue   the   9th   annual   newsletter   for   the   Prince   Takamado  Japan  Canada  Memorial  Fund.  Since  its  establishment,  the  PTJCMF  has  made  a  great  impact   on   the   academic   relationship   between   Japan   and   Canada,   honouring   the  achievements  and  the  legacy  of  His  Imperial  Highness  Prince  Takamado.  The  fund  has  supported   academic   works   of   many   students   in   a   wide   range   of   fields   through  scholarships   and   bursaries.   It   has   also   offered   selected   students   optimal   learning  experience  through  the  Japan-­‐Canada  Academic  Consortium  Forum,  which  has  grown  into   one   of   the  most   recognized   and   successful   youth   conferences   that   deals   with  contemporary  social,  economic,  and  political  issues.    

Such  investment  in  the  education  of  young  generation  is  essential.  This  year,  another  major   earthquake   hit   Kumamoto,   Japan,   while   the   devastating   forest   fire   in   Fort  McMurray,   Alberta,   has   remind   us   of   the   significance   of   pre-­‐   and   post-­‐disaster  politics.   Several   controversial   news   items   also   appeared   in   worlds’   headlines   –   the  Syrian   refugees,   US   presidential   campaign,   and   accelerating   global  warming   –   all   of  which  made  us   contemplate   the   roles   that   young  people   could  play   in   this  word  as  global  leaders  of  the  next  generation.  I  will  keep  making  every  effort  to  offer  students  opportunities  to  study  and  learn.  I  am  grateful  for  your  continuous  support  and  advice  for  the  enhancement  of  our  programs.    

高円宮日本カナダ記念基金ニュースレター９号をお届け致します。本基金は、設立以

来、高円宮殿下の御功績を記念し、日加両国の学術的交流促進に大いなる貢献をして

参りました。基金は、奨学金や賞金等により、多分野に渡り多くの学生の支援を行うと共

に、世界における社会、経済、政治問題を中心に扱う日加学術フォーラムを通じ、  参加学

生に有益な学習機会を提供しています。本フォーラムは、近年 も質の高いユース会議

として内外から高い評価を得ております。  

基金による学生教育への投資の重要性は、両国にとって計り知れません。今年は、熊本

における震災、そしてアルバータ州フォート・マクマリーでの森林火災等により、改めて災

害対策の重要性を認識いたしました。また、シリアの移民問題、アメリカ大統領選挙、深刻

化する地球の温暖化等がニュースで取り上げられ、   次の世代が世界でどのような役割を

担って行くべきかを考える機会になりました。   若い世代の活躍を期待し、より有益な学習

の機会を作ることに尽力して参りますので、皆様の御支援御鞭撻の程、宜しくお願い申し

上げます。

2) Report from the Seventh Japan-Canada Academic Consortium Student Forum (February 13-21, 2016)  

The   7th   Annual   Japan-­‐Canada   Academic   Consortium   Student   Forum  was   hosted   by  Nagoya   University,   Aichi   Prefecture,   Japan.   Fourteen   students   from   ten   Canadian  universities   and   fourteen   students   from   nine   Japanese   universities   attended   the  event.  The  theme  of  this  year’s   forum  was  “Energy  and  Society:   Increasing  Efficiency  and  Improving  Our  Quality  of  Life.”  Under  the  leadership  of  Professor  Matthew  Linley,  the   Director   of   the   International   Education   and   Exchange   Centre,   the   participants  explored   how   to   deal   with   environmental   issues,   including   air   pollution,   water  pollution,   and   climate   change.   Professor   Linley   provided   the   students   with   the  challenging  questions:

“Should   the   development   of   alternative   energy   sources   be   encouraged   to  help   reduce  dependence  on   fossil   fuels?”   “What   technologies   are   the  most  promising  and  which  are  likely  to  have  the  greatest  impact  on  energy-­‐related  issues  in  society?”      The  highlight  of  the  forum  was  the  lecture  given  by  Professor  Hiroshi  Amano,  a   recipient  of   the  Nobel  Prize   in  Physics,  who   invented   “efficient  blue   light-­‐emitting   diodes”   and   kindly   agreed   to   speak   to   the   participants.   Other  speakers   included  Professor  Mark  Charles  Weeks,   Professor  Masao  Takano,  Hiroki   Tanikawa   (Nagoya   University),   Professor   James   Brown   (Temple  University),   and   Mr.   Tasuo   Teratani     (the   Former   Executive   of   the   Toyota  Motor   Corporation).   The   participants  were   not   only   given   opportunities   to  listen   to   these   distinguished   speakers   but   also   learned   invaluable   skills   in  team-­‐working,  organizing,  and  analyzing.    

第 7 回日加学術コンソーシアム学生フォーラムは、愛知県の名古屋大学にて開

催され、カナダの加盟校 10 校から 14 名、日本の 9 校から 14 名の学生が参加

しました。今回のテーマは、「エネルギーと社会：効率化と生活の質の向上へ向

けて」でした。  名古屋大学国際教育交流センター所長の Matthew  Linley 教授の

指導の下、参加者は水質・大気汚染、気候変動等への対応について論じまし

た。Linley 教授は、「化石燃料の依存を減らすため，代替エネルギー源の開発を

奨励すべきか。」「どのような科学技術が も将来性があり，社会におけるエネル

ギー問題において も大きな効果を与えそうか。」等、様々な問題提起を行いま

した。

今年度のフォーラムは、青色発光ダイオー ドの発明家で、ノーベル物理学賞受賞者の 天野秀樹先生にご講演を賜るという光栄に 預かりました。その他、名古屋大学より Mark Charles Weeks 教授、高野雅夫教授、谷 川寛樹教授、テンプル大学日本校より James Brown 教授、そして元トヨタ自動車 幹部である寺谷達夫氏が講演しました。 参加者は、権威による講義を聴講する機会 を得ただけでなく、チームワーク、組織力、 そして分析力等を 学びました。

The Seventh Japan Canada Academic Consortium Student Forum: Comments from Students:  “It   is   such   a   wonderful   concept   to   get   together   good   students  from   all   different   backgrounds.   This   diversity   of   passionate  people  who  share  various   interests  was  perceptible  throughout  the   week,   but   was   seen   even   more   strongly   in   Friday’s  presentations.  Mixing   different   approaches   to   tackle   the   same  problem  proved  brilliant,   and   led   to   a   variety   of  proposals  and  ideas  that  showed  everyone’s  different  background.”  –  Canadian  Student    「様々な背景を持つ優秀な学生達と集まるというのは素晴らしい

3) PTJCMF Student Mobility Program Awards (October 2015-September 2016) Princess  Takamado  English  Essay  Contest  January  2016   The   theme   of   the   2015   English   Essay   Contest   was   to  discuss   the   significance   of   internship   experience   in  Canada   for  young  generations.  The  winner  of   this   year’s  contest   was   Mr.   Masaru   Yamamoto   from   Kanda  University   of   International   Studies   University   with   his  essay,  “An  Internship  in  School  in  Canada:  The  Window  to  the   Further   Advancement   of   Japan.”  Masaru   has  won   a  $1000   travel   scholarship   and   one   semester’s   tuition   at  the   University   of   Alberta’s   English   Language   School   to  study   English   in   Canada.   The   second   prize   went   to  Ms.  Sae   Takebe   from   Kyoto   University.   Further   information  on   the   Essay   Contest   and   the   award-­‐winning   essays   is  available   on   the   Memorial   Fund   website.  <http://www.ptjc.ualberta.ca/PTJCMF>.    ２０１５年度高円宮妃殿下英語論文コンクールのテーマは

「カナダにおける理想的なインターンとその経験の重要性   」でした。 優秀賞には、神田外国語大学の山本大さんの論

文、「カナダ大学のインターン制度−日本における制度発展

への窓口   」が選ばれ、山本さんにはアルバータ大学英語ス

クールの前期分の授業料と１０００ドルの旅費が授与されまし

た。二等には、京都大学の武部沙愛さんの論文が選ばれま

３月１８日（土）にバンクーバー   において、ブリティッシュ・コロンビア大学、全国大会組織委員会、   カナダ日本語教育振興会の主

催で開催されます。    Summer  Program  Travel  Awards  May  20-­‐June  20,  2016   The   PTJCMF   supports   students   travelling   to   Japan   to   participate   in   Ritsumeikan   University’s   Summer   Program   in   Kyoto.  Students   entering   this   five-­‐week-­‐long   program   participate   in   intensive   Japanese   language   classes   with   a   keen   focus   on  Japanese   culture,   history,   and   tradition.   This   year   the   following   students   have   received   scholarships:   Rubi   Wiersma  (University  of  Alberta),  Yingjie  He  (University  of  Alberta),  Elliott  Neumeister  (University  of  Alberta),  Lucas  Becker  (MacEwan  University),  and  Sarah  McClure  (Western  University).    PTJCMF  は京都市の立命館大学主催の夏季日本語研修に対し旅費助成を行っております。この 5 週間のコースでは、日本

語及び日本文化・歴史について学びました。今年度の助成金受賞者は、ルビ・ウェルズマさん、インジエ・ヘさん、エリオッ

ト・ノイマイスターさん（以上アルバータ大学）、ルーカス・ベッカーさん（マキュワン大学）、サラ・マクルアさん（ウェスタン大

学）でした。    JACOS/JAPEX  Scholarship  in  Engineering  September  2016    Since  it  was  established  at  the  University  of  Alberta  in  2008,  the  JACOS/JAPEX  Scholarship  has  grown  and  is  now  distributed  annually  at  three  Alberta  institutions:  the  University  of  Alberta,  Keyano  College,  and  the  University  of  Calgary.  Students  with  superior  academic  achievement  entering  their  second,  third,  or  fourth  year  of  study  are  eligible  for  the  award  in  the  fields  of  Mining   Engineering,   Petroleum   Engineering,   Chemical   Engineering,  Materials   Engineering,   Geotechnical   Engineering   and  Environment  Engineering.      JACOS/JAPEX 工学技術奨学金は、２００８年の設立以来、   アルバータ州の３大学（アルバータ大学、キアノ・カレッジ、カル

ガリー大学）の学生のうち、鉱山工学、石油工学、化学工学、

マテリアル工学、地質工学、環境工学に就学中の 2,   3,   4 年

4) Financial Report on the Prince Takamado Japan Canada Memorial Fund

As  of  March  31,  2016,  the  book  value  of  the  endowment  was   $1,712,525.85   and   the   market   value   was  $1,988,370.93.   The   amount   of   the   spending   allocation  of   the  fund  was  $62,325.14  with  an  opening  balance  of  $101,623.16.   Of   this   amount,   $65,000   has   been  budgeted  for  spending  in  2015-­‐16.

ん、マシュー・ロバーツさん、ジェイムズ・ピフージャさんでした。   5) Other Special Events Hosted by the Prince Takamado Japan Centre  Every  year  the  Prince  Takamado  Japan  Centre  organizes  and  coordinates  local  and  national  events  in  the  areas  of  teaching  and  research  of  the  Japanese  language,  culture  and  history  of  Japan.      PTJC では毎年日本語教育、文化、歴史等の研究の促進のため、国際的、  全国的、地域的なイベントを開催しています。    Guest  Lecture  by  Professor  Osamu  Ieda,  Hokkaido  University  September  22,  2015   To  promote  a  scholarly  exchange  between  Canada  and  Japan,  PTJC  facilitated  Professor  Ieda’s  talk  for  approximately  forty   students   in   a   EU’s   political   Science   course   taught   by   Dr.   Lori   Thorlakson.   Dr.   Ieda,   a   specialist   of   Hungarian  studies,   examined   a   very   topical   issue   about   how   Hungary   controlled   the   EU   border   against   the   Syrian   refugees.  Students  were  very  interested  in  learning  Hungary’s  immigration  policy  and  the  dilemma  it  faces.    日加間の学術的交流促進のため、当センターは、北海道大学スラブ研究所の家田修教授の授業を企画しました。当大学

のロリー・トーラクソン教授が担当する約４０人の EU 政治の授業で、家田教授は、シリア難民とハンガリーの国境問題にか

んしての講義を行いました。学生達は、ハンガリーの移民政策やその政府が抱える問題などについて学びました。    Visit  of  the  Kakehashi  Project  Students  March  22,  2016   PTJC   welcomed   participants   in   the   Kakehashi   Project—a   Japan-­‐Canada   student   exchange   program   organized   by   the  government  of   Japan  and  facilitated  by  the  Asia  Pacific  Foundation  of  Canada—to  the  University  of  Alberta.  Six   Japanese  high  school  students  and  two  teachers  from  Fukuoka  toured  PTJC’s  new  facility  and  the  Department  of  East  Asian  Studies.  They  also  met  with  representatives  of  the  East  Asian  Studies  undergraduate  student  association （KGK）,  with  whom  they  discussed  their  interests  and  for  whom  they  demonstrated  karate  and  kendo  routines.  The  participants  listen  to  a  mock  art  history  class  by  Dr.  Walter  Davis  and  viewed  early  modern  and  modern  Japanese  prints  from  the  university’s  art  collection  in  the  university’s  Print  Studies  Centre.      当センターは、日本政府及びアジア・パシフィック協会（カナダ支部）による学生交流プログラムである架け橋プロジェクトの参加

学生に対し、当大学ツアーを実施しました。福岡からの高校生６人と教師２人は、当センターの新しいオフィスや東アジア学科を

訪問し、当学科の学生グループと交流しました。学生達は、空手や剣道等を披露しました。また、センターは、ウォルター・デイヴ

ィス教授による美術史の講義や大学の近代日本美術コレクションの鑑賞等を企画しました。   The  Japan  Foundation  and  the  Japan  Studies  Association  of  Canada  Annual  Lecture  Series  by  Professor  Takamichi  Mito,  Kwansei  Gakuin  University    November  4,  2016    This   year,   PTJC  was   chosen  as   the  host   for   the  annual   JF/JSAC   lecture   series.   Professor   Takamichi  Mito   (Kwansei  Gakuin  University)  gave  a  public  lecture,  “Omotenashi  (Quality  Service)  as  a  Source  of  Japan’s  Soft  Power  and  its  Transferability  to  Canada.”  He  discussed  how  Omotenashi  became  a  widely-­‐used  term  by  the  media  and  the  government  in  Japan,  especially  after   the   Olympic   campaign.   From   the   perspective   of   political   economy,   he   also   assessed   the   economic   value   of  Omotenashi.  After  his  lecture,  many  people  joined  in  the  discussion,  asking  him  interesting  questions.      当センターは本年度の JF/JSAC 講義シリーズの主催機関に選ばれ、関西学院大学の水戸隆道教授が「日本のソフトパワーとして

て企画され、国際的に活躍するフルート・太鼓演奏家の渡辺薫氏が参加しました。    Japanese  Cultural  Festival    November  26,  2016    East   Asian   Studies   undergraduate   Students’   Association,   Japanese   exchange   students,   and   others   including   past   JACAC  forum   participants   organized   the   Japan   Festival   on   the  University   of   Alberta   Campus.   PTJC   co-­‐sponsored   this   students’  initiative.   The   event   had   a   research   exhibit,   which   introduced   academic   profiles   of   our   faculty   members   and   graduate  students.  It  also  featured  a  number  of  attractions  such  as  “rakugo”  and  “karate”  demonstrations.  The  venue  was  packed  with  more  than  450  people,  who  enjoyed  making  sushi,  practicing  kendama,  and  trying  yukata.      東アジア学科学生会、日本人留学生、及び過去の JACAC フォーラム参加者による大規模な「日本文化フェスティバル」がアルバ
