Teach us to pray …

One day Jesus’ disciples came to him with a question: “Lord,

teach us to pray …”

Part of the reason this fascinates me is that these men, being

Jewish, would have known numerous prayers. These men

would have prayed numerous times in their lives. Yet, there

was something in being around Jesus when he prayed that

caused them to sit up and take notice.

What was it? I don’t think it was a deeper voice. Nor was it a

lengthier prayer. So … What was it?

First, when Jesus prayed things happened! Miracles

occurred. The 5,000 were fed. The sick were healed. Water

became as easy to walk upon as dry ground.

Second, Jesus prayed as though he were actually in

conversation with a living being. His prayers were personal

and intimate. His prayers were meaningful.

Beginning April 19, we are going to walk through a series

stemming from the disciples’ question for Jesus, which I hope

would be a question each of us has for Jesus: “Lord, teach me

to pray.”

Through this series of sermons, we hope to encourage you to

see prayer as one of God’s great gifts for us, and an

opportunity to deepen your relationship with our heavenly

Father.

We will encourage you and invite you to pray in ways you may

have never tried before. So that we might feel more

comfortable, more conversational, more experiential in our

times of prayer.

Music Notes Sincere thanks to so many that helped make our Lenten and Easter seasons so

meaningful!!

The Fine Arts Council…for helping to make the “Book of Luke” such a resounding

success. In addition, Cyndi Walker was such a help in getting the word out about

this important event.

The Friends and CHAMPS choirs and their workers…for making Palm Sunday

joyful as they led us all in worship singing “Blessed Is He Who Comes”. And, our

three young flutists…Riley Foster, Katelyn Gensley, and Ellen Holmes…who

helped our young choir members in this presentation.

The Chancel Choir…for doing extra duty all during Lent and then making Maundy

Thursday and Good Friday so meaningful. And it’s always a good thing to join

with our fellow Christians at First Presbyterian who join us for these remarkable

services.

And remember…we are Easter People!! Rejoice in the Lord always!!!!!

Grace to you all……….Jack

FUMC Wants You To Tell Us

Your FUMC Ministry Story

\

~ Our Ministry Stories ~ Featuring Jon Johnston

To tell you a little about my ministry here at First United Methodist Church Henderson,

I would like to take you back in time to my family’s church, Wesley Methodist Church

in Longview. Wesley Methodist, now known as Wesley-McCabe, was always an

important part of my family’s life. My parents were very involved in both the church

and community. Around the age of 12 or 13, I began to notice that both my

parents were frequent volunteers in activities that benefited both friends and

strangers. My mother told me that we are always supposed to take care of our

family but God also expected us to help both friends and strangers alike.

After Sandy and I moved to Henderson and became members of First United Methodist Church, we were offered

many opportunities to become involved in activities that benefited our church family and the community as a whole.

Around 1995, a group of volunteers met to discuss the formation of a local Habitat for Humanity affiliate here in

Henderson. As often happens in our town, the core of this helping group was made up of FUMC members. While

Habitat for Humanity is not an official ministry of our church,

I have always felt that without our church’s support,

this life changing organization would never have become

a reality. To me personally, Habitat for Humanity is

a very important ministry of our church, and it has

allowed us to help less fortunate families in

Henderson while at the same time allowing me to

pursue my favorite pastimes of fixing things and

making sawdust.

Lent is that time of year when we walk with Jesus to the cross. In this

time of reflection, the Gospel calls us to remember our less fortunate

brothers and sisters—the homeless, the poor, the lost, and those who

are alone. It is Jesus who commands us to care for them. If we truly

walk with Him, we will care for them.

Newgate Mission is the heart of the community. We are local people

serving local people. Without your loving care, we would not survive.

We will serve over 83,000 meals this year; we will give away 12,000

pairs of pants; we will host thousands of people as volunteers seeking

the face of the risen Christ.

We need your help. We have

no guaranteed income—we

are totally dependent on

your generosity. A typical

day at Newgate includes

meals, showers, toiletries,

van transportation, clothing,

furniture, counseling,

prayer, and sacrament. By

sending your gift to

Newgate Mission, you walk

with us toward Easter

morning—a day of new

life and new hope! No gift

is too small to make a real

difference in the daily life

of your neighbors at

Newgate.
